I was right to guess that they hit shallow gas pockets while drilling for soil boring. It’s the only logical explanation how the explosion was triggered. The engine room would not have exploded just like that if there had not been a presence of gas.

But I am surprised that they encountered gas at a very shallow depth ie 38m from mud line.

How did they miss the gas pockets when they had done shallow seismic survey prior to the soil boring? I hope they actually did the survey.

Someone will have to pay the price...

Interested to know how they are doing the soil boring/drilling and what kind of well control equipment installed. (Rig will have diverter and large flow line to divert the shallow gas). Also being a floating vessel, is there any emergency disconnect sequence in well control event?
*
Imagine if they were driving piles to fix a jacket to the sea bed, and they hit the gas pockets. The cost could be catastrophic to the owner. I don’t think there’s a mechanism to divert gas while driving piles or even conductors!

During pile driving, is it possible for a gas to travel to surface?  hmm.gif

There could be shallow gas pockets below mud line dear.

If I remember correctly, there was an incident several years ago when a pile hit a shallow gas pocket, causing loss of support under a mudmat, the jacket to overturned. Part of the site specific investigation is a shallow seismic survey. The platform will be relocated if shallow gas is detected.
*
One of the objectives of conducting shallow seismic survey is to scan for any shallow gas pockets within 1km depth from mud line. This scan should be done prior to doing any kinds of drilling or pile/conductor driving at that location.

If you have been following this thread long enough, you would see that 90% of the discussions in here is about career in oil & gas.

The remainder of the discussions area about affairs related to oil & gas like Brent crude price update, drilling rig activities update, new upcoming projects queries, etc.

Oil production may be ramped up in order to increase govt revenue when GST is removed.

Will that translate to immediate increase of brownfield activities so that more oil is produced? And greenfield developments are revived?

I hope Hasan Merican plans for immediate oil and gas quick rejuvenation activities in Malaysia!

will the crude price have any bearing on the activities? i.e it goes low, lower activities and vice versa? hmm.gif

Brent crude is inching up close to USD 80 today.

Most likely it will stabilise between USD 75 to USD 80?

Wondering about this as well. I just got called for interview by Sapura fabrication at Lumut. Any new project coming to Sapura?
*
Sapura recently won the EPC of Penaga CPP floatover, first floatover fabrication for the company. The fabricator is going to be very busy very soon.

So what are the next big EPCIC projects to look forward to? Anything interesting? Bokor first steel cut in Q3 2018, then there is Pegaga awarded to Sapura. Anything else to look forward to? Petronas seems quiet here, I remember in 2012-2015 so many projects!
*
Kasawari. EPCI rebid is ongoing, target award Jan/Feb 2019.

Hi all the sifu here, may i know what is the different between supply chain vs engineering? Is supply chain business consider technical or non? And may i know the career prospest in supply chain in oil and gas industry?
*
Supply chain management (SCM) was previously known as Procurement. Having said that I think you should be able to guess the differences between supply chain and engineering.

SCM work involves all contracting works and procuring of items (goods and services) required by the organisation for own usage and consumption and for projects.

There’s virtually an SCM dpt in every oil and gas operators and contractors. So there IS a career for an SCM specialist in the oil and gas industry.

Is Petronas going on massive investment spree? Apparently they're aiming to award both Kasawari and K5 next year. Also will this mean Petronas shifting away from downstream?
*
We certainly hope so! Other Operators are watching at Petronas. If Petronas restart field development in a big way, others will follow!

Kasawari is a go. K5 is a testing of new technology to monetize the acidic field

I wonder whether they will use membrane technology similar to REPSOL’s BRE CO2 removal technology for K5.

I assume if its a CPP Sapura will get Lumut to build it? But people I know say Lumut is running at almost full swing..can they in that case someone else (such as MMHE or Korea/Singapore yards) to fabricate the CPP?
*
MMHE will have to slug it out with SAPURA for the EPIC of the new CPP. But bid won’t come out that soon.
