All codec pack are mostly teh same really, with the distribution are different. K-Lite Mega is teh favourite as it includes all teh needed codecs in one package thus if you can't play the files, it's the file problem. Most like CCCP includes just basic codecs that you need. Heck, you can even download the codecs seperately.

OEM only lets you activate on one PC, and binds your Windows to that PC only.

Don;t use that setup. go to device manager, and choose the one that has the '?' icon. That should be your sound device. right click and choose update driver. after that choose the folder that contains the Cmedia driver. That what I usually do anyways

DirectX version is redundant as you will be using DirectX10 anyways after that. Just add more HDD space. 20GB is what you need for Vista

go for 32 if you are not going to buy any 64 bit programs. IMO the 64bits still have issues with drivers more than the 32bits.
1GB + 20GB Hdd should do the trick with Vista, but there are some cases that I heard that the Turion is not as good as the Intel's Cetrino as it will suddenly use more battery when installed Vista as there are more background process than XP. you might want to skip Vista for your laptop and install it on your desktop instead.
Defrag should be faster on Vista than XP as theorathically, it will auto defrag whenever we are not using the PC IE idling.

Rofl, waiting for M$ to coming out with a un-BUGGY version will be like waiting for money to drop from the sky

Pros of vista
Beautiful eye catching design (providing u have a GC that support PS2.0)
Better security
Programs (IE7, Bitlocker(ultimate), dreamscene(ultimate), WMP11, Media Center(home premium and above)

Cons of vista
less compatible with a lot program
memory eating

Pros of WinXP
more compatible with current program
less memory consuming
can upgrade to vista look (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/424533 (credits to J-Slade))

Cons of WinXP
Fugly (unless u upgrade to vista look)
less secure

thats all i can think of
*
I beg to differ on that issue. What IS really memory consuming? If the less memory it uses the better, than what is the reason you buy all of that memory in the first place. I forgot where I read it, but the best OS if it ever exist will use 99% of the memory available and use that accordingly to the program it needed. While you might think that Vista is using more memories, it's actually using it to make program go faster using superfetch. considering XP vs Vista in memory issues, XP waste more ram than Vista, as every used RAM allocation you see in Vista is not wasted compared to XP.
On the looks, Vista will use less resources compared to XP on the same rig with the same looks. Thus why even bother using transformation pack on XP when in reality you are making it slower than if you're natively using vista?

Syahid: no offence dude, this IS a vista thread, and we don't really f***ing care what OS you use.

i heard upgrading from XP to Vista take up to 3hours time rather 25 minutes for fresh install, anyone already faced the situation?
*
It's slower as upgrading means it have to bakcup the registry and all that stuff.

Currently, forceware version 101.41 is the most stable version. And, do not expect too much as the driver is still in its beta stages. Besides, i'm also experiencing some reduction in framerates while running NFS:Carbon on Windows Vista as opposed to on Windows XP. I think this is mainly attributed by Windows Vista's management of memory usage through the SuperFetch feature. With that, Windows Vista uses more memory to enhance user's experience by caching recently used applications. Therefore, there is not much memory left to be allocated for games. Thus, resulting in lower performance on games.
*
From what i've read on superfetch's documentation, it will free up any memory needed for a 3D intensive software, and it will take it 0.003 of a second to do that

Really? blush.gif
Anyway, i just found out that by disabling Desktop Composition specifically through the compatibility options does give a significant boost on 3D intensive applications. Doing this will disable Aero while you are running let's say NFS:Carbon. Leaving you behind with a temporary GUI of Windows Vista Basic. And, when NFS:Carbon is close, Desktop Composition (Aero) will be enabled again. Hence, this could give you a temporary boost in performance while you are running a game.

This is what you could do:

  1. Click on the Vista Start button and at the search box, type in the filename of the executable that you would want to run under a non-Aero environment.
  2. Right-click on the selected file and select "Properties".
  3. Click on the "Compatibility" tab. At the "Settings" section, place a checkmark on the "Disable desktop composition" checkbox.
  4. Click "OK".
  5. Now, whenever you run the selected application, Aero will be disabled.

It disabled automatically on mine blink.gif blink.gif
But I hate it when it disabled on Media Player Classic... WTF??

you need to reformat the winXP drive, then pop in the Vista DVD and choose repair.
either this will work or you have to reinstall Vista. Either way BACKUP FIRST
