Sooo many thing have happend over the weekend *ahem*...

I just wanna give a my summarized 2 cents worth.

Pennywise, if I was around when you first posted, then I would be the one telling you to do research before posting questions because I find that MOST of your questions can easily be answered either in the 1st page or by doing a basic google search. Almost all your questions are things that we have come to answer over and over again. Anyway, you're lucky Hun is around to answer all your questions, although I find it that you are still confused about keeping a suggie. I mean no harm by telling you all this, just something from a suggie lover to another. The rest are just summarized pointers for you.

1. Naturally, suggies live in a colony, yes, there'll be male and females but all they need is companion regardless of male+female, female+female or male+male. Keeping 2 will already take most of your time, let alone 3. Stick to 2 max.

2. I have a friend working in Shell too. The rules are strict, so better not risk bringing your suggies to the office.

3. If you want to get a big cage immediately, then the RM450 - black color that you saw at Pet Safari is one of the best (not the yellow roof), even I am considering to get that one. A cage can never be too big for a suggie, even a for joey (provided a healthy one).

4. You really-really need a LOT of time if you keep suggies and judging from the time and such that you have explained, honestly, I'm afraid it would not be sufficient for you to keep them. As Hun has been saying too, it is really like keeping a baby and most of your time will go to caring for their needs from feeding, bonding, playing, cleaning the cage (and I mean including every single thing inside) as well as cleaning the area surrounding their cage (because they can be messy eaters).

5. You have to be prepared that your suggies will be different from other peoples' suggies and if they do not turn out to be as good as others, will you still love them and accept them as they are?

6. Perhaps you wanna know how it feels like to be a suggie parent, if you're staying near enough, I'd let you babysit mine and see how it feels like brows.gif

Peace icon_rolleyes.gif

Hun, CFP and the rest, yeah, when I went to Pet Safari on Saturday, I saw the joey that they're selling, really damn small, I think it just OOP, can barely eat on its own cry.gif So kesian cry.gif Summore this girl (I assume she wants to buy it) was trying to feed it with baby food using a shringe, the joey was struggling like don't wan to eat, smeared some of the baby food on it's face sad.gif Eii, I was so close to telling them off, but then "who am i" to do so... I didn't bring Iggy & Luna with me, if I had, perhaps it'll give me more courage sad.gif Furthermore, besides the big cages that they have, they also seem to have a lot of smaller cages too which makes me so afraid that people who have no idea how to keep suggies will opt to buy the smaller and cheaper cages... Yeah, they do keep some of the suggies in the smaller cage sad.gif Since I cannot tahan, I just walked out after buying my stuff cry.gif

CFP, Aiko still so small ker? And how do you mean by Chika bullying her? Cuz Iggy and Luna, when they play with each other, look like fighting also, but they're just playing blink.gif Ohh, and the clicking sound tu, is when one suggie is calling to another only, that's why Hun never heard it from Kiah tongue.gif

Snow, I couldn't get Sugre's suggies pix cuz my camera rosak again sad.gif Will have to ask from Sugre herself smile.gif

Hun, Sunday appointment = ON thumbup.gif

How do you classify a joey's age?? I mean till what age / months will it stop being considered as a joey but an adult?
---
Flexarium are foldable is it? I intend to get one to keep my suggies in my room but I am very afraid that they might bite through the mesh and escape. That would be most disheartening.
---
3. Like I said, if I get the black color cage, I think my parents will lock me up in there instead. Look above for the few reasons why I cannot get that.
5. Yes, I will still love them. I dont even know what a regular suggie will be like so if mine is any different, I probably wont know anyway
6. I live in Klang. If you feel comfortable with me trying, sure I dont mind taking up a preview lesson
*
You can actually look around to find about suggies age right? This is what I meant by basic questions. Honestly, you could look it up somewhere.

http://www.sugar-gliders.com/babies.htm (About joeys. The right age to get one is about 5-6 weeks OOP. The ones at PS is just OOP.)

---

I thought you went to PS already, haven't you seen the Flexarium? If you're worried they would chew out the mesh, then don't get the Flexarium. We cannot guarantee what kind of suggie yoou will get, if it's not a chewer, then fine, if it is a chewer, then it'll chew its way out.

---

About the cage, then fine if you can't fit the black one in your hse. It just would be better. However, the yellow roof is also fine.

Every single suggie is different from one another, that's why they're special wub.gif So you'll just have to bear with the one you get... I'll PM you a story I know about this later...

If you're willing to pick my suggies, I don't mind letting you have a preview lesson. I'm staying really far from you tho.

Hmmm hmm.gif That's a bit tricky, dunno what it means, but high pitch Luna squeaking is, "back off lah"... Haha...

Right now, I put food in wasabi's cage once a day. I put fresh fruits (apple/lai) and also boiled egg white. Anything i can add/improve?
*
More variety of fruits. Feed once at night before you sleep, next morning throw away any remaining and put another fresh meal. I'm not so sure about too much boiled egg tho, have to check with Hun.

Can Wasabi take mealworm already? If can give to him about 5 each day or double but alternate days.

40% off Exo Terra stuff??? How come I didn't noticed shocking.gif Was probably too busy pitying the joey cry.gif

This a good chance to upgrade my Flexarium brows.gif Hehe...

Yup, add more variety of fruits, almost all fruits can be given except grapes, avocado and corn, the rest are fine smile.gif

Owhh, forgot to mention to all that veggies are a must too, altho some suggies will be picky and not like it, but it's good for them smile.gif The other night I chopped up some carrots, sweetpea and tomatoes, almost finely chopped then mix them up and gave to Iggy and Luna, they almost finished it the next morning rclxms.gif

Phewww, Iggy and Luna really stinks now sweat.gif

Terrarium is the plastic/glass enclosure for reptiles.

Flexarium is the black mesh enclosure.

Yeah, you can use it as a permanent set up but it still doesn't guarantee that your suggie will not chew on it even if you keep them since joey.

But Exo Terra does claim that the Flexarium mesh is a heavy duty one.

I use the Flexarium as a temporary set up when I travel only.

Ohh, one disadvantage tho, you cannot place beddings or other absorbent type litter underneath the Flexarium because it does not have a tray.

Yes, there is Flextray and PS does sell those too but my concern is that there is no barrier or cover between the bedding and the suggies. Plus if you look closely on how to use the Flextray, it's actually very "leceh"/"ma-fan" because it is placed inside the enclosure but outside the frame, and everytime you want to clean it, you have to take off the whole mesh to remove the Flextray.

So I guess the best is still going for a proper cage? I think I will just go with the yellow one I posted on Page 70. That'sRM450... big ouch to my wallet but I want to prepare the best for them.

Besides Pet safari, anywhere else I could go for cages?

Can we feed suggies jem that human eat? What are the ingredients that I should look out for to avoid?
*
If you're getting the one at PS, sign up for the Toby Reptile card first, it's free and you'll immediately get 10% off the price smile.gif So that's less RM45 for you.

There are other places that sells cages, but last time when I surveyed, the ones at PS are cheaper and bigger, even Pets Wonderland also don't have.

You can add the natural jam (no sugar or preservatives added) to the mix if you're doing it, but feeding it directly is not advisable.

Jam has been explained.

Yogurt, can, I give mine one teaspoon twice a week, they love it smile.gif Go for low fat wink.gif

Fruit juice, can, also must be 100% natural, no sugar or preservatives added. but too much of fruit juice can cause them to pee a lot.

Oats, no-no, they're for the mealworms, not suggies, however it can be use for the mix if not mistaken, but I leave that to Hun smile.gif

Aye too!

laugh.gif

I'm always up for a gathering, love catching up with other suggies smile.gif

Hun, that means Kiah can accept other gliders already, the clicking sound is chatting, so she was trying to chat with Chika rclxms.gif Did she do the rub-a-dub-dub her body onto Chika's pouch? Hahaha.

Snow, other protein alternatives mebbe can get Hun's mix with chicken one smile.gif But don't get discouraged, you can still try and give her mealies from time to time, mebbe she's still not ready yet biggrin.gif

CFP, where got you kacau Iggy smile.gif And yeah, that time Iggy was still not fully bonded like now, he even crabbed at that Shawn kid remember when he tried to touch his feet tongue.gif Now he is better like when we met last weekend lah smile.gif Luna also is making good progress it seems smile.gif She's less jumpy, only when really2 terkejut and she now comes and greets me every morning like Iggy does (wanting the treat lah as usual tongue.gif ) But one thing lah, the smell is also growing, phewww...

Great!

Actually, when you first got him, you should already intro him to your smell and if you have a bonding pouch, you can start carrying him around to familiarize with your smell and body movements smile.gif

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Jun 12 2007, 10:16 PM)
1. Where is Scale and Tails
2. Where is Natural Aquatic?
3. Where is Irene Aquarium (both the one in KL and PJ) I would like to visit their shop.

4. Hun, dont mind be being straight with you but I read about Slurp from V2 and how does it come to compare with your Glider Mix?

6. I know apple seeds are dangerous, does it apply the same for everything else like watermelons, orange seeds and etc?

7. What time do you feed your gliders? I am a working adult.

8. If I take him out in a pouch all day on the weekends, will it disturb him while he's sleeping in the pouch? I dont want the glider to wake up all grumpy!

9. Lights... Do i need them for the cage so I can see them in the dark at night? Some special lights UVB or UVA or whatever its called? Advise!
*
As for the whereabouts, you can check the pet shop list in the sticky.

4. Slurp and mix is the same thing, there are even various version floating around the net, the secret is to try yourself and Hun's recipe is a secret too tongue.gif All I know my suggies love 'em wink.gif

6. Seeds... Hmm, to make it simple, if you can eat the seed, then it should be okay with them like kiwi seed, dragonfruit seed. But if you can't eat them, like apple seed, pear seed and so on, then remove it smile.gif

7. I am a working adult too. I need my sleep cuz I have to wake up early, but I make sure I feed them around 11.30 pm the earliest or 1 am the latest. Normally I wait until they wake up, then feed them, then only I go to sleep. But at times if I'm really tired and sleepy, I'll set my alarm around 12 am just to wake up and feed them. The next one is in the morning before I go to work and before they go back to sleep around 6.30 am to 7.30 am. Weekends latest 8.30 am smile.gif Once you start feeding them at certain times, you HAVE to keep the schedule because they are creatures of routine too, they'll know their schedule. Biggest example is that I give my suggies a treat, first thing every morning before I give them their morning meal, so they will be waiting for me hands and feeds on the bars every single morning laugh.gif

8. Carrying them in their pouch while they're sleeping is the best thing ever smile.gif When they're new, they might be easily woken up or disturbed, so you have to be careful of too loud sound, bumping them and such. But when they are used to it, then no problem smile.gif Mine follows me to works every alternate days and I work till late sometimes, shopping during weekends, even to movies smile.gif

9. Lights? No, you don't need any lights for them but it is great if you can keep the lights around you house low or warm ones, or you simply don't switch on the lights near them, probably just the nearest toilet or room light is okay.

QUOTE(coldfusionpower @ Jun 13 2007, 05:06 PM)
haih .. kp kacau me real attention when telling that "kacau" statement. hahaha
*
Huhh, a bit confused lah rclxub.gif tongue.gif

QUOTE(sense_less143 @ Jun 13 2007, 05:20 PM)
No, I mean, when can I put him on my body? Right now if I put him on my lap he still crabs. should I just ignore and see how or should I use different tactic?

p/s- Wasabi loves the worms too much la. This morning I catch him sniffing around and nibbling at the worm's skins. aiyah... I want to give him more, but cannot too much rite?
*
Yeah, you can smile.gif But if he crabs continuously, mebbe you should leave him for a while, he's still scared and not familiar with, but if crabs a bit, then quiet, then just keep it on smile.gif What I used to do when Iggy crab last time is hushhh him slowly, talk to him and tell him that you mean no harm, then slowly massage from outside of the pouch. Massaging from outside of the pouch is also good because they'll get use to your touch smile.gif The first thing I do when I get back from work (if they're left at home) is to massage them or squeeze2 them tongue.gif

Ohh, once they love mealworms they can finish a whole container. You must limit the intake smile.gif

Hun, if not mistaken, there's actually more than a pair of gliders at PS. They keep 2 small cages inside the big glass store room at the toby reptile area. You might see empty small cages only, but they're inside the coconut cuz they came out to eat when I was there.

The black RM450 cage is really2 tempting, my husband said can put me inside, even two people can fit tongue.gif But did you notice one more cage, white color, small bar gaps too, RM290? That one wide also but slightly small, I was thinking of that one too smile.gif

I've tought of getting a tall cat cage and cover with the PVC mesh too, but the cost of the PVC mesh to cover the entire cage is quite costly lah, better buy the proper one straight, plus if you need to dismantle later on will be such a hassle...

Haihh, cage, cage, cage...

Pennywise, not many of us do tent bonding here, mostly opt for doing it in small glider proof rooms. It works as well smile.gif I use my small guest room which has few basic furniture only plus my small office room. But if you'd like to do tent bonding, the better... No in car bonding ahh, there's a case where the glider went into the air-cond and got her tail caught and putus, betul kan Hun??

Gathering mid July is fine, I'm not around early August.

Just now took both Iggy and Luna out in my room (in the office), put both on the memoboard cuz I need to train Luna to come to me like Iggy does. Both of them run about on the board and then Iggy made the move and jump back to me, but Luna didn't follow sad.gif She keeps on running on the board... I put my arm near also, she came and sniff2 only... Then I stretch my arm to the board where Iggy crossed over and went to Luna, he groom2 her a bit then jumped back to me, looked back at Luna on the board like waiting for her, but she didn't follow... Then he jumped back to the board, Luna went hiding under a memo, then Iggy barked calling her, she came out, then Iggy jumped back at me and waiting for Luna again, still she didn't follow... Instead of me teaching Luna, it seems that Iggy was helping me out too biggrin.gif

The whole process lasted almost half an hour and it was not successful cuz Luna still doesn't know how to come to me, but she let me pick her with less struggle tho... I don't recall seeing her jump ever, always needs to be picked up and run around low only, sighhh... Will keep on trying again...

On the other hand, after that, Iggy went on a jumping frenzy, he jumped from me, to my friend, then back to me, then to another friend, then to another friend, then back at me sweat.gif I think he got carried away trying to teach Luna (all the while Luna was still on the board).

Ahh see, nevermind, settle down first, take your time, eventually when you're able to get one, it'll definitely be worth while wink.gif

I am allowed to keep only one (type) pet cuz my husband knows that he if doesn't restrict me, our house will turn into a zoo tongue.gif And the fact that I'm staying in an apartment too.

Keeping a pair of suggie has kept me really2 busy, juggling between work, overtimes, house work - laundry, cooking, cleaning, taking care of my suggies and taking pouch orders... flex.gif So I don't want to take other pets and later end up neglecting them wink.gif

KP,

I would like to get some pouches from you too once I get my gliders. I will need 2 bonding pouches and 2 sleeping ones. Will they be available some time end of June or early July?

Which section is the RM290 cage? Is it in the Exotic section? I would like to go over and check it out again, more properly this time. I want it to be tall, like the ones I posted in my previous post (the one with the picts of cages).

Nobody does tent-bonding eh? I would like to have a glider-proof room but then my room phone line which is also my Streamyx has a cable going out of my room window, thus the mosquitoe netting and the window itself is not properly closed due to the wire that is going through. I scared my gliders will jump out and escape to the back-alley of my house.
*
For the pouches, safest I'd say early July, right now I'm trying to finish the current orders asap.

The RM290 cage is in the same area, last I went, it was placed beside the glass store room. It's not as tall as the yellow roofed cage but it is wider a bit. I'd say it's a slightly smaller version of the black RM450, but white in color smile.gif

If you feel that your room is not really glider proof, then tent bonding would do well smile.gif We wouldn't want to risk losing our little fuzzbutts out in the back alley do we tongue.gif

Early July? Guess that would be good too. I will need to go see the RM290 cage because I am not sure which one you're talking about. I also need to imagine where to place when I bring it back home without my mom making a fuss about it.

Tent bonding for gliders, where can I get tents ah? Tesco or Giant? How much does it cost? I am a big guy, 6'3" tall so I will need a huge tent if I were to buy. Or I will somehow tape up my window so ensure they dont escape.

Haha, I went nuts for a whole month before getting my first glider sweat.gif

If the cage has not been purchased, I'm sure you'll be able to find it wink.gif

As for tents, yeah, Tesco, Giant or Carrefour will have smile.gif The 2 men tent is appx. RM30-40 and the 4 men tent is around RM50-60. I think the 4 men tent is big enough for you smile.gif Sometimes Carrefour will have an outdoor offer, so the tent will cost much lesser smile.gif

I also thought that tent would cost > RM100 but now you are saying that it is < RM100... Woo hoo, then I can go find and buy already.

snowcandy,
You went nuts the whole month before you get your gliders? I think I am suffering from the same symptons!

I would like to ask somethings about bringing home joeys for the first days. I will write what I know and please correct me or give pointers if you notice my understanding is wrong.

When bring joey home, leave them in the cage for a day to settle down to their new home.

Let them have only one master, myself for i-dont-know-how-long before I introduce them to the rest of the family, preferably one-by-one.

What else do I need to know/
*
Haha, I think it was me who went nuts lah tongue.gif

Yup, when you bring a joey home for the first time, let it be in the cage for a few days to familiarize with its new home smile.gif Don't disturb it too much besides feeding it.

I won't really say "master" lah, because suggies are not like dogs, you gotta treat them like a companion. I think what you meant is to let it bond with you first then only introduce to other family members smile.gif Suggies are capable of bonding with more then one person if you let them smile.gif

Ohh, you know about the smelly t-shirt thing right? Before you pick up your suggie, wear a shirt (preferably and old one that you will no longer wear) to sleep and all for more than 3 days, then you can put the smelly shirt inside the cage or over the cage so that your joey will learn to know your smell. Better still if you can cut out the shirt into a small piece and put it in the sleeping pouch.

If you have read, you'll know that suggies are marsupial, thus they are accustomed to pouches and they grew in their mommies' pouch. Bags, no-no cuz you'll have other stuff in it and it will probably harm the suggie, pouches and pockets are fine.

Even tho frens or housemates, you have to tell them off about suggies, they are not toys, not even normal pets, they're exotics.

And KP brings her to work also, she even sings to Iggy some times. biggrin.gif

Urm, and I think that having too much stress can cause a glider to die. Not only a glider, actually, but stressing any animal out too much would probably cause it to die.

I don't sing to Iggy anymore since he has Luna, without her, sing also tak jalan, still want Luna tongue.gif

Just want to say thanks to KP for the pouch, it arrived already and wasabi is currently sleeping soundly inside it  tongue.gif

Btw, I read the earlier posts, and someone said about an OOP joey being as big as Shurie?? My wasabi is so small, and it's already 4 months old. Snow can vouch me on that, my wasabi is smaller than shurie even tho he's a male.

Should I blame the breeder who sold him to me or what? I know before he used to feed wasabi only apple, bread, and cat food.

You're welcome nod.gif

Well, as Hun explained earlier, it could be from the way the breeders feed and take care of them that resulted in the different sizes and some worse cases are that the breeders will lie about their real age. Technically yeah, some breeders are to be blamed, but since we have very2 few home breeders, what to do.

Just keep on feeding Wasabi with good food and take good care of him, I'm sure he'll grow to be a big and handsome boy wub.gif

QUOTE(coldfusionpower @ Jun 18 2007, 05:12 PM)
about the size. i do know a few glider are smaller even they are older. kiah is a year plus but my 7months old chika is much bigger . better wait for KP or Hun to explain . they are the expert ..  tongue.gif

Err, I think Hun has explained in the prev post, furthermore I'd also think it's the "baka" (breed). Good quality parents, must produce good and healthy babies right?

Anyway, yeah, Shadow and Jarrah are about Shurie's size when we met at PS that day, I was also surprised, but good also, easier to handle smile.gif

Owh, Hun has bathed Iggy and Luna, rclxms.gif now both are smelling good but wonder how long it will last cuz I still see poos inside the pouch (which is Luna's poo, cuz her poos are smaller than Iggy tongue.gif ) doh.gif

Now I know how to bathe, mebbe if the need arises, I can do myself, but hopefully it doesn't lah tongue.gif

Ohh, Hun, Iggy says sorry that he bit you, he said he doesn't like water very much tongue.gif

Thanks again Hun!
