I'm contemplating whether the VR is needed since I've already got a monopod for the lens.

Was gonna buy the tamron sp 90 next, then replace my 18-70mm with the 18-200mm VR but im wondering if I should just dump my 18-70mm now for the sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 since I've already got the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and the sigma can work as my macro lens temporarily. Or should I get the sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 instead of the 50-150mm? damn kau lots of choices out there

actually yeah, i've been convinced to get the 70-200mm, and get a 28-80/105mm to fill in the gap. Now the million dollar question is whether I should go with sigma or nikon's non vr version. the nikon is tad slower and around RM30-40 more expensive after adding the hood. I'd like the faster focus speed on the sigma but im a little worried about getting a crap sample from sigma...seems to be pretty common with sigma products.

the decision is hard....the nikon 80-200mm is slow, focus dependent on body...gonna be pretty slow on my D50, and apparetly the AF/M switch screws up easily.
The sigma is fast, but at f2.8 it is relatively soft compared to the nikon, but at f4 it best even the vr version... |

The body is a consumable already. Lens are here to stay.it depends on your budget also You should engrave this in your mind: Old lens dont go, New lens wont come. lol |

Nah I won't be sticking with the D50 for long...I'm missing the vertical shutter release already. The Nikkor is not really better than the sigma, they are both good but at different aperture. My budget? even I dunno my own budget

Some say they can't take moving objects with the nikkor....dunno what body they using, and i've read alot about AF-S is faster than the nikkor, hands down....as far as optics, they are both very good....all depends on whether you get a good sample or not anyway...even leica doesnt make perfect lens...I'm gonna call and see if they carry it locally...wanna see if those ppl are exaggerating the speed or what not..

I've been browsing pbase for sample pictures....they both take very good pictures, I think if the copy is good, both would work very well and the final result will be dependent mostly on the photographer than the lens itself. I'll probably go with the sigma, and hopefully I get a good copy
edit: btw, where do you guys usually buy lenses in msia? what is the best price for the sigma in msia? shashinki has it for RM4k+ I'm deciding whether I should go for: -Gray market - 1 year international warranty + 1 yr credit card insurance - RM2522 (total 2 years warranty) -Gray market + 7 years mack warranty + 1 yr credit card insurance = RM2619 (total 7 years warranty, 2nd year CC warranty overlaps Mack warranty) -Sigma Canada market - 10 years sigma warranty + 1 yr credit card insurance = RM3672 (total 11 years warranty) which is a better buy? oh yeah... one thing famous with 3rd party lenses esp sigma is that they're using a 3rd party focusing chip or something like that... so they'll just slap that chip onto the lens and voila, shipped out. they're not like canon and nikon where they have their own chip.
test out properly first b4 taking out that plastic of yours |

Get the nikkor, less compatibility issues in the long term. 3rd party lenses if they don't update the chip, the thing can act up.. mine acts up with F-- error whenever i plop on the sb600 with it, without the flash its completely fine. Cleaning contacts etc all doesnt solve it.
