If you ask me, this game with its regenerative health system, 2 weapon system and lack of secret hidden spot will not be well received at any period, not in the past and certainly not now.
I want the old FPS back where I am able to carry 10 weapons on my character, choose to fight a boss with a rocket launcher or empty fist, having to look for health pack or health station to replenish my health and being given the freedom to decide how I want to face the army of aliens or horde of demons down the corridor instead of being spoon fed and lead by the hands every step of the way.

So, you expect people just to shut up and take all the crap developers do these days?
No wonder 15USD map packs sold so well.
Here's the
dilemma, DNF was 1st announce in 1997; the game has gone through many reboots in between, which resulted in much resources gone wasted and in the end a forced closed down of the original studio.
When Gearbox took over what do you expect them to do?
Go back to the old school formula?
- Pros: Old school fans will love it
- Cons: It alienates the younger generation. In the interest of Gearbox and 2K, I don't think they even consider this a viable option.
Work on a whole new idea instate of where 3D Realms left?
-I don't even think that 2K would be happy if they did that and DNF would not be release in 2011. If the project drags any longer DNF would never see the light of it's release.
So my conclusion is that DNF is an abomination. You are now playing a game that has a mixed of old school, mindless shoot-em up(90's gameplay), a Half-Life wannabe (their attempt to add cinematic drama, time interval of 2000-2007) and today's generation of fps game, you get regenerative health, 2 guns only, linear 5 hours gameplay.
90's gameplay + Half Life generation (yr 2000-2007)+ modern shooter (yr 2007-now) = Duke Nukem: Forever
All the flaws from this 3 timeline is in this game.
