i myself is a newbie...started around mid of january.....
i didn know bout the difficulty of nanotank...i didn know about soil and stuffs...
i went and bought an 18" x 8" x 8" tank because of easy and small
i went and ask the LFS say i wan planted tank sand..they show me holland sand
i went and bought internal filter
i went and buy light without reading how important light to planted tank
i bought everything only i started to read this thread
i learn and try and error myself...
so basic thing to start...hmm....see how u wan to start it..u wan to start it expensively or cheaply....
mine tank setup:-
-holland sand and put fert ball inside (thanks tenchi of telling me where to buy)
-DIY CO2
-13W light
-HOB filter
-thermometer
voila..u can start ur planted tank!! heheeh...u see la ur setup is able to plant wat kind of plants....
i can see my plants got growth..i dem happy d....of course my tank is not as cun as those forumer here...but start small small, learn bout the basic then only start big rite??
BUT BUT..THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS READ ALL THE POST IN THIS THREAD.......very informative leh

and at the beginning.....i went to LFS almost everyday....hahahahaha
paiseh for the long post...i might sound boasting but i'm just happy tat my tank is making progress....ahahah...i'm satisfied..
ahh....trying something tat actually works....it gives u the satisfaction...be it simple or complicated.

my HOB filter seems like cant circulate the water well la...how how how????????
