I'm wondering whether it is better to install the curtain from ceiling height or follow the window height? In your 1st photo, it's window height while the 2nd photo is ceiling height.

*
There's a few factor that determine whether to go for Full height or window height curtain installation.

1.Air cond mounting on top of windows
For instance in the 1st photo, (project from Setia Ecohill Semenyih) The air cond piping was located right on top of the window making full height curtain impossible.
Owner hv no choice but to go for window height.

2.Fabric width
In some case, Full Height curtains could result in more fabric being used to produce a curtain depending on big is your window, SOme fabric comes in 125' inch width.
If your ceiling is extremely high, chances if you either spend more on the fabric or go with a window height due to fabric width limitations. .

1 of the recent question i got from PM is :
Which should i choose?? Blackout and Dimout curtain?

BLACKOUT curtains are fabrics that block out 100% of lights emitting through the fabric. Blackout curtains are typically found in Hotel, Cinema and convention centre. Blackout curtains are typically heavier and denser and to certain extent, help reduce the echo inside a room. It is also very popular among the current home owners as it blockout significant amount of heat from sun that radiates through the window, trapping the heat between the window and curtain.

Dimout curtains on the other hand are fabrics that is not classified as blackout and is one that will allow a certain amount of light through. It ranges from being very sheer to something that blocks 80% of the light. Dimout fabrics helps diffuse light from the sun and giving a warm and vibrant settings to the house. However, it is not very effective in heat insulation.

There's not 1 size fits all solution in this case. It really depends on the application and the effect home owners wants to achieve on the unit. It is worth to note that majority of my clients are more inclined towards blackout curtain as its more practical (heat insulation) compared to dimout curtain. .

cheers,
BlindMan. .

According to some home owners, they complained blackout curtain cannot be wet wash, it can only be dry wash. Hotels do not wash the curtain, they just throw away and change new ones every year or so.

If the fabric contain less than 20% cotton then it's safe for wet wash. Most blackout curtain are made of polyester. Wet wash is ok for polyester and will not shrink your fabric.

I already made a curtain with normal, cheap hook-design. Can you change it to more durable design as I found that it easily broken from the rail with minimal force.

I dont mind changing the railing as well.

Recently I received many inquiry whether to go for Curtains or BLinds for their homes.

As a general guideline, curtains are commonly installed in Living and Master bedroom as it give a soft touch to the area. Blinds such as Sunscreen/blackout blinds are commonly found in Study room and kitchen area.

In recent years, i see there's growing demand of blinds such as zebra and triple shade blinds ahead of curtains. Users tend to opt for ease of maintenance over aesthetic value of curtains. Design of blinds is also getting more versatile and diverse making it more competitive against curtains.

If you hv difficulty in choosing between both, here's some things you should consider before going for your purchase. .

1. Durability.
Blinds are generally more durable than curtains
2 Maintenance
Blinds are easy to maintained vs curtains
3. Aesthetic value
Curtain trumps blinds in the aspect. Curtains designs are better than blinds, though there's more blinds design coming out in recent years.
4. Affordability
BLinds are slight cheaper than curtain. Then again, it depends on what blinds materials you choose too! it can be expensive too. .
5. Place of application
If it's a cooking area, it's best to go for a roller blinds.

Cheers,

With windows getting bigger and higher (up to 17-20ft in some cases) for new development, what' the best window dressing solution with the least maintenance?

Here's a case where a client of mine in Arte West Subang has a 18ft high window overlooking the highway. HE wanted a simple window solution to block out the heat and cover up the window with easy maintenance. We helped him to tint the window and install a roller blinds over a long curtain. nod.gif

Blinds or curtain....what are the rules within the same floor area? Does it look awkward if we mix? For example on the ground floor living room windows, we used blind and then move to dining area sliding door we use curtain and next to the sliding door there's a window and we use blind. Or within a bedroom, one window with blinds and another window of the same bedroom with curtains.

Good question.
It's okay to use blinds in the living room and curtains in dining area sliding door. Perhaps for the window beside sliding door, we would suggest client to use curtain to ensure consistency.
FOr bedroom, we suggest to stick with either blinds or curtain alone unless the room is really huge that there's a different section within the room itself ( for instance some ppl hv huge walk in wadrobe/study area inside the master bed room)

Point is, there's no fixed guidelines here, it all depends on clients preference and demand of clients (factors like ease of cleaning+ maintenance and etc)

There's a variety options available namely, I'll suggest a few which i think suits your small room the best.

1. Sunscreen blinds
Practical and functional. Allows natural lights diffusing into your room.
Cons- If you're changng in the room ,best to go for blackout or zebra blinds

2. Blackout blinds
AS the name suggest, block out any sunlights coming into your room.

3. Zebra blinds
Versatile and stylish, allows you to control the level of lights coming into your room. you can either close it entirely or allow ilights to come into your room.

According to this guide, the kind of blinds you'll need would greatly depend on a number of things.

1. The room type (living room, library, etc.)
2. The room's function (so you'll know if you need blackout blinds, etc.)
3. Style (what's the most appropriate style. ex: Roman or Venetian)
4. Material (ex. for bathrooms, water-resistant materials are necessary)
5. Energy saving properties.

So I think you need to identify the main purpose of your room first. Do you need it to be light and airy or do you want it dark and private? And then you take in the other things into consideration. Just my two cents, hope it helps. smile.gif

So I think you need to identify the main purpose of your room first. Do you need it to be light and airy or do you want it dark and private? And then you take in the other things into consideration. Just my two cents, hope it helps. smile.gif

When requested, Mr Blind(s)man contacted me and gave me a quick quotation for my curtains without delay but unfortunately couldnt go with him due to my father have another supplier.

Dont mind giving him a try next time if I have another house.

This is possible. The blinds can be ceiling mounted on top.

But before your do that, do consider if you're okay that the blinds might swing a little when you turn on the fan. . smile.gif

yes I do. Vertical blinds are kinda obsolete these days as there's a lot of complains on the mechanism with high rate of failure. Most ppl opt for roller blinds instead and the mechanism is much durable and simple compared to vertical blinds.

I agree on the mechanism failure but ain't that the same to horizontal one? my only concern is horizontal tend to collect more dust then the vertical one.

For your purpose of understanding, the mechanism of roller blinds is more simple and robust compared to vertical blinds. there's only 1 roller and 1 strap used to adjust the roller.

I figure the only part where roller blinds collect dust is the blinds pelmet, not much on the blinds itself.

*ps, Our roller blinds comes with 3 years warranty due to manufacturing defects. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi. Pm me the details. Looking to install curtain rods in my condo. Thx.

Which is recommended? The rod type or the roller type to hang the curtains. I noticed a lot of retail curtains sold are for the rod type. Sorry, if I’m not using the term correctly.

Hi,

Hey man,

First of all, I would like to thanks for delivering a high quality product with such an affordable price! The total quotation I received from Blind(s)man was RM 4,xxx total inclusive everything while the one from M* group was RM 4,xxx merely for 50% deposit! Exactly for the same material.

Second, many thanks for delivering the product within less than 14 days so I can celebrate my daughter birthday with a curtain lol!

And surprisingly while chasing my tight deadline, the workmanship was astonishing.

Yes, I would definitely recommends to others and most definitely would be a return customer.

Thanks man!

Hi, I am living in a condo with a huge window (12 ft wide x 10' high) in the living room, facing east. So in the morning, the sun blazes right in and is very hot, and I also have my study desk quite close by. My existing curtain allows quite a bit of heat to pass through. After the sun goes up higher and no longer shines directly inside, there is still quite a strong glare coming in that radiates some heat and does not balance out the lighting in the living room. So I am thinking of getting a set of blackout curtains to solve my first problem with the direct sunlight. I want to know if there are any sheer panels or thinner/translucent curtain fabric that I can use to replace my existing plain sheer panel, to solve my second problem which is the glare.

Suggestions appreciated.

Hi,
I would suggest you tint your windows. As far as i know, sheer fabric can only diffuse the intensity of sunlight coming into the room but does not help much in solving the glare problem.

Hope it helps biggrin.gif

Yea, VB is not so common any more and there were a lot of complaint on the mechanism and string being worn out after some time of use. Most ppl go for zebra blind and roller blinds nowdays. .

Thanks for the suggestions. I normally open my windows partially for ventilation, so the tinting will only be partially in effect. Let me shop around a bit for some darker and more dense fabric for the sheer, or maybe I should call it 'secondary' curtain. Thanks again.

thing with Zebra Blind is there's not much setting you can change, roller blinds it's either up or down, the traditional horizontal blinds don't look so good and are thin.

i think Vertical blinds still look the best.

The string issue is the one used to pull the VB in/out or the one to turn the angle of the blinds? Also they are much more expensive.

Blindsman,

Do you have total blackout wooden blinds? This may be a solution for my problem with the direct sunlight heat during the early morning hours. I could install a dimout curtain in front of that to reduce glare, for other times, while letting some light and air in.

Thanks.

Wooden blinds are blackout but there are gaps in between the wood plank. I suggest going for a blackout roller blinds instrad.
That will block out any light comings into your room. This will help solve your issue.

hi there, can you advise if i want to install an aircon above the curtains, what is the recommended clearance of the bottom of the aircon unit to the top of the window to ensure sufficient space & clearance for the curtain rails? plane to use those eyelit type with 2 layers a thin layer and then the main curtain.

are the side curtains 1 piece with the 2 main piece or separate 2 smaller pieces?

is it possible to make a 90degree bend on the rails? i can't seem to find it outside. like a curved 90deg. must be custom made?

The rod is quite bulky at times and it really depends on the rod you use. Recommended clearance is min 6 inch to be safe.

Im not entirely clear with you question above. In general, you cannot bend the curtain railing unless you're using curve track for your bay window/ window with 90 degree bend.

1) Living Room: W300cm x L240cm (sheer + blackout curtain with track)
2) M/B & Bedroom 1: W190cm x L150cm x 2 units (sheer + blackout curtain with track)
3) Bedroom 2: W130cm x L120cm (sheer + blackout curtain with track)
4) Additional for M/B: W70cm xL150cm x 2 units (black out blind)

Do we need a special curtain rail for this curtain design.

Normal curtain rail can use this curtain design?

Using normal curtain rail, can do that kind of curtain design as shown in photo? Something like eyelet curtain but is hook type.

I was informed that the curtain design more expensive and required different curtain rail.

I think this is using the normal '104 curtain hook' for railings that's mounted on ceiling.
It look something like below.

1. Hi, I'm looking for someone to supply and install aluminium double track curtain railing (the traditional type which you just hook the clip through). Please quote me for 82 feet of railing.

2. I'm also looking to install wooden blinds to protect my yard grille from the sun and rain. the measurements are 5 ft by 5 ft. How much would you charge to supply and install the blinds inclusive of the railing/track?

Hi IVL,
We recommend for gap between the edge of the wall to your plaster ceiling is 6 inch.

Hope this helps! biggrin.gif

Hi,

Do you provide blinds / plastic materials for outdoor purposes, mainly to hang at the side of zinc awning to prevent rain drops from failing inside the balcony? (though not all raindrops can be prevented, but most of them can be blocked)

Sunsreen is a single layer blinds where it allows 3-5% of light being emitted through.
On the other hand, zebra blinds consist of 2 overlapping layer. this enables you to adjust the level of light you wish to pass through the blinds itself.
It's more flexible compared to sunscreen in general.

Here's a video to ilustrate how zebra blinds operate. smile.gif

Hi Harold,
We typically suggest users to install rollerblinds instead of fabric if you're involved in heavy cooking in kitchen.

Also keen to know would blinds have sound insulation effect? Some of my rooms are facing the highway so reducing the sound would be good.

Hi Haka, blinds hv some insulation effect but not as good as curtains. You'll need a thick materials fabric with a higher curtain fullness to insulate the external sound.

This is based on my understanding from my limited experience.
I once helped an acoustician to furnish a hall with curtains to reduce the echo and reverberance

Hi, do you do railings and curtain for L shaped connected window?

Something like this.

I'm currently using 2 rods for each side of the window but I realized that there are still a small gap at the L which allows sunlight to come through after I hang up my ringlets curtains. Was thinking about changing the entire railings.

Is there anyway to still use ringlets curtains yet able to blocked the all sunlight shining through?

Hi Lemontea,
Yes we do. . You may opt for a curve track that runs along the top of your window.
You then install a single piece of curtain on the window.

That way, no light will be able to pass through the curtain gaps from outside.

Hope this helps! smile.gif

Hi Blind(s)man

How to install a full height double rail curtain if we have ceiling height if 115" and plaster ceiling height of 111"?
IT is too difficult for a drill to find a space between the wall and plaster ceiling gap..

thanks

Hi Mon,
the curtain railing will be mounted on the plaster ceiling instead of the ceiling slab. It's typically mounted on the plaster ceiling using a butterfly toggle.
Google butterfly toggle to find out how it works.

Hope this explains. smile.gif

My plaster ceiling pattern is similar like this. wall ceiling near to the glass door, plaster ceiling is next to it . I am wondering how to fix the rail into the gap.
Thanks

Thank you for reply. To clarify, your quote is the same for either dim out or blackout? Or it's the standard set fabric/material?
The usual deposit is how many percent.

Hi Dasoulz,
% of black vary depending on color. We have blackout ranging between 70-100% black which is common used in bedroom and hall.
