Hello everybody. I can see there are many dog lover in here. I got a few questions on dogs elimination. Please enlighten me.

Why dog owner doesnt encourage their dog to eliminate in the cage? Please tell me what are the disadvantages.
I dont understand, why not dog owner get a big and spacious cage and just let the doggy eliminate in one end and sleep in the other end. Put some comfortable blanket in the end where you want your doggy to sleep. Dogs doesnt like to dirty their sleeping place right, so they definitely wont eliminate on the blanket.
Leave the other end where you want your doggy to eliminate empty and everytime they pee&poo it will drop underneath onto the tray at the bottom(put wee wee pad on top of the tray for better absorbtion). Its like attached bathroom/toilet design.
I know many dog owner would train their dog to hold their pee&poo for up to 10 hours when they were out working and only allowed their dog to come out from the cage to eliminate once they get home. Isnt that a suffering to the dog? Why not just let them eliminate inside the cage anytime they want while the owner are away?
Cleaning is also easier since you just have to pull out the tray, replace the wee wee pad and put it back in.
Everytime the owner get home, just let the cage door open and let the dog come out and roam freely in the house and next time when your doggy feels like pee&poo they will go back to their "attached bathroom".
Some people say its not good to keep a dog in cage and its like taken away the freedom of the dog(the dog will get depression) but some expert say dog can be kept in cage and it feel comfortable in it. But of coz dont cage it the whole day la. When you get back home or at home let it come out and walk around the house.
I believe if you keep the cage clean and put some nice comfortable blanket in it with some toys the dog will feel comfortable in it. Make it like a sanctuary. Just like Ikea bedroom. Simple, nice and clean. Who will not feel comfortable to sleep in Ikea lookalike designed bedroom. Right? hmm.gif

wah, very long. Its ok to use cage as their toilet. Diff ppl got diff preference mah.
My fren's dog will do his business in the cage, pee and poo. SHe let them roam free eventhough no one is at home.
Really depends on how u train ur dog lah.

nod.gif Ohhh. Thanks joanalooi. I searched on the net on dogs toilet training and most of them suggest crate training or newspaper method. The crate training method are to train the dog to hold their pee&poo in the cage. I really dont understand why dog owner train their dog that way. What if one day the owner got some important appointment and reach home after midnight? Haha...kesian the dog.

Your fren let her doggy to roam freely in the house without anyone at home? Wont they bite and mess things up? hmm.gif

My fren punya dog wont mess things up. But mine i dun think can lah. I use paper training, and also cage training. I tried before to let her roam free while I'm out. After 3 hours back home, although no simply poo and pee, but I notice she bite her "toilet" (newspaper lah). Mine will behave when someone is at home, but if no one is there, dunno lah.
i rather cage her loh. Thats y now i let her sleep in my room loh, dun wan cage her during bed time also, kesian leh.
BUt the best for me is to let them roam free at certain place, mayb the kitchen, or a small room dedicated for them, or an empty space with the size of 6 play pen. I really hope to do that, but my small apartment here no place. Wait till I become rich, haha..........

My experience:

WHat should be the brand of the food?
It doesnt matter on the branding. Put more weightage on the ingredient listing and get foods that are specifically for puppies. Our pups need the extras that is not available in adult foods, unless of course you provide supplement along with it. Depending on manufacturer, puppy food feeding may drag as long as 8 - 11/12 mths before switching to adult food.

How much should the puppy being fed? How many times per day?
Best 3 times daily, but you could suit your timing as most of us might be engaged and not able to attend to our pups in afternoons. 2 times is Ok.

How to take care of the pee and poo problem?
Agree, it must be done at the very beginning your pup comes home. Prefer it in their cages so it wont be so easy for them to reach their, especially their pee if left openly on a tray, when not around. Observe their actions before a pee/poo, and if able to, their timing. Once something similar comes about, lock them in their cage and wait to release only after they are done. A few times and they will remember and use their potty correctly.

What should be done for its health care, jab, pills.........
3 vaccination according to schedule. De worm depending on needs i would say. I gave my pup the first de worming during her 3rd vaccination. And again about 2 months later. Depending on the de worm medicine, use according to adviced frequency. A year after, go for another vaccination if able and afford to.

How to stop puppy from crying at nite?
Try to confort her/him. It she/he gets stubborn or starts to dominate you, leave her as she/he is. Eventually, she/he will understand that it is pointless and you cannot be overpowered and it will be fine. Sometimes, you'll have to be hard hearted. I know it is difficult though...

How to make it understand that commands?
Yep, patience...

When should it be toilet trained?
The very moment your pup comes home

For apartment dog, and working owner, how to take care of them?
There is no deffinite answer to this. Some puts it in such a way, you must let your pup suit your style or timing, yet some goes vice versa. My advice will be as long during the first 2-3 days (if possible, a little longer), be it a longer duration with your pup in order to familiarize her/him, proly on w/ends or holidays. Once she/he adapted her/himself with the environment, it should be fine. Some says it is stressful for them to be lonely as well, as pups, but i would say depending on our pups temperament and character. It would be fine.

Just to share share, hope this helps.

Greetings everyone. Its me again with few Q's. Here it goes.

1)If a puppy is paper-trained, does that mean wherever it goes as long as there's a newspaper(including the newspaper of the day on top of the table), it will eliminate on it?? I mean jump on the table and do his "business" comfortably. hmm.gif

2)From what I know, dogs goes to the same spot in the house to pee&poo. What if I bring it to my friends house for a few days. Will the doggy choose to hold its pee&poo thinking that i'm goin to bring it home later??(kesian if it do that) OR any place will do as long as there's newspaper on the floor??

3)If I change the potty area in my house lets say from car porch to kitchen, will it find its way to the new spot or it just eliminate on the car porch floor even without newspaper on it??

4)Is it possible to have 2 potty area for a doggy??

I just dont understand dogs. Haha doh.gif icon_question.gif

Thanks in advance to all of you kind, helpful and experience sifu's. notworthy.gif

Hi Wanderlust,

sharing my exp with you

1) one of my friend's dog is so used to pee-ing on towels that wherever she goes, and there's an urge to pee, she'll head to the door mat first biggrin.gif

2) puppy have a hard time controlling their muscles. Hence, they pee many times a day compared to adult ones. Diff house have diff furniture arrangements as well as the interior design. I have a friend's pup which came over to my place for a few days, he's clever enough to run back to his playpen (where the newspaper is) to pee

3) no idea

4) yes it is for puppies u should put papers at a few spot / larger area. As time goes, u can reduce the newspaper area.

For my dog lah.

1. She's train to pee and poo on papers. If the paper drop on the floor, yes, she'll go pee there. But she wont jump up the sofa or table to do business, think no enuf space for her to turn circle gua.........no syiok also.

2. er......if train to do on paper, just ask ur fren to put papers at the corner, then show her the paper, i think they will recognize it.

3. better put papers the initially to let them familiar with it. Slowly only take away the papers coz got their smell already.

4. yes, but mine only got one lah.

Thanks alot babymiki and joanalooi for the answers. notworthy.gif Hmm, based on the experience of both of you, I think if a dog is paper trained, there's a big probability they will jump on table and sofa with newspaper on it. sweat.gif The reason why I'm asking about 2 potty area is because I prefer my doggy to pee&poo on grass in the garden. The only concern is I may be away or come home late and I'm worried that my doggy cannot hold that long inside the house. wink.gif

P/s: Checking out babymiki's blog. Haha tongue.gif Another nice blog to add to my favorites.

spray.............psssttt...........

Just my opinion, dunno true or not.
a neutered male will reduce its marking habit. But stil it will do marking one. Marking habit can teach one, but i dunno how lah as mine is a female.

a spayed female can still make love, but normally they wont as they dun have the urge already, coz no more period, no that kind of hormone imbalance.

Neutered dogs won't mark but will still lift his leg to urinate if you neuter late. If neuter early like when it is 1 year old or before it lifts it's leg, then it won't really pee with the leg up in the future unless got female dog around.

Marking is by peeing with the leg up and pee a small puddle here, a small puddle there and everywhere that the dog wants to show his dominance and territory. Neutered dogs would pee in 1 place only.

My lab is spayed, my boxer is neutered.... can see difference in behaviour.
