Besides the obvious like battery strength, you need to ensure the T&G card side is facing downwards, while the back is facing up to the reader when you hold it up above your dashboard. That's it. And try to avoid those BET lanes which is catered for higher vehicles.

I am having almost the same problem as you. Just that I almost have to stop my car to get it detected.

I am suspecting those smart tag are of poor quality. I used not even 1 yr and the LCD display already konk. Ask them where can I get it repair and was told somewhere in Bangsar and only that 1 place. doh.gif

So I just let it be.

The Smart Tag communicate to another device hanging down from the roof angled 45° down. So, the tag has to be angled 45° up toward the device for maximum transmission LOS (Line of Sight). Yes, like most said here, it is using IR.

Why failed?
The tint film you used on your car blocked IR so well. If your battery already weak, it just add another factor. Maybe like some claimed, the older tag is more sensitive then the new one but I cannot concur. I don't have all these to compare.

Note that the darkness of the tint has nothing to do with how much the IR beam is blocked. You can see that even the Smart Tag IR window where the IR diode is located behind it is totally almost black in color.

Last time I used V-Kool, not sure which series (JPJ compliant), but no problem with Smart Tag. Now I'm using other brand which is also JPJ compliant. It looks just like clear glass 70% light transmission but probably 99% failed to detect the Smart Tag. Yes, the same Smart Tag I used before. Now, I have to lower the window glass bit and hold the tag outside for 100% detection and no need to slow down so much. sad.gif

I'm using the newer version as well and sometimes you need to push the button on it first and see whether it's actually turned on. Because the battery is usually loose

Just bought a new SmartTag, most of the time when entering the StmartTag lane, the smart tag cant be detected.

I never use any mounting tool, if i use hand to carry the smart tag, should i extend my hand until the car front windscreen and point smart tag slightly to the right side ?

same here
hmm.gif hmm.gif few time denied entry

padahal waifu use on next seat is fine

Hold your smart tag in a 45 degree angle similar to the angle of your windscreen.

That's it, simple as that.

Never fails.

probably this. will try that. annoyed until I rather go touch and go lane sometimes

You have to hold it just below your windscreen (the bottom part of the windscreen), the same position as if it's glued to the windscreen.

It never fails me.

Gotta make sure it faced the right direction. There are times where i hold the wrong side (opposite) direction.

Check the battery connector, mine always no SMARTTAG but then actually its a design flaw the battery connector didnt touch the battery. Need to make the connector closer to the battery terminal

The main problem is usually 1) the signal of the new square device is not as good as the older model and 2) very dark tinted windows, coz the device uses infrared to send a signal to the overhead reader
*
Yes I am also realised that the old model of smart tag got better signal than then newer one

its just ppl diy and sell it.
u can also diy its pretty simple.

i didnt because i did not stick the tag at windscreen, so if connected to car charger it will be troublesome to take out and keep the tag after use

you must have to make sure it is near to the sensor as possible. also try to drive n place your smartTag directly under the gate sensor. If u pass by BET lane, put it at the higest part of your windscreen. The higher the better.
