I just got back from servicing my car at Honda, and just found out that my oxygen sensor is f***ed, and the reason behind why the engine check light is always on the past couple of days. yada yada yada, they quote me RM1100 for it! What the f***?? Kanine so expensive, so i decided to think about it first.

any car expert here can tell me why is it so important that i fork out RM1100 to change this little shit. This shit that just totally screw up my "Im going to buy a PS3!" plan. and is there any generic, 3rd party oxygen sensor out there?

O2 sensor usually located at ur exhaust manifold.. its used by the ECU to determine where ur combustion is lean or rich.. n adjust accordingly...

brand new sure exp la... try searching around for it...

which model of honda btw?

QUOTE
Oxygen sensor(s) - Monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can determine how rich or lean the fuel mixture is and make adjustments accordingly

As quoted from howstuffworks. smile.gif

Regarding the price, I'm not sure if it's reasonable. laugh.gif However, try checkiing your car elsewhere and see how that shop quote you, besides confirming that your oxygen sensor is down. nod.gif

Woah, very important man.
Like what everyone else is quoting, it is to determine whether your car is running rich or lean. If it's running rich, the O2 sensor detects too little oxygen and decreases fuel. If it's lean, it'll detect excess oxygen so increase fuel.

Whle I was in Australia, I thought the O2 sensor was quite expensive there as well. Forgot the price already but probably almost AUD 300. But what do I know back then. blush.gif

So compare it to here, probably a bit too expensive I think.

O2 sensor is an essential component of the ECU in managing air/fuel mixture. Your car's fuel consumption and engine power depends heavily on it.

Yeah, I agree with ulet that you call up spare part shops for price. And I also highly recommend PH Auto, ask for Mr. Beh, the boss there. I get all my Nissan spare parts from PH Auto. Price is very reasonable.

But I am a bit shocked at how fast your O2 sensor is damaged... O2 sensor usually no need to change during a car's life. It is designed to last beyond 150,000km. What year is ur Honda and what model?

2004 Accord 2.4... How much mileage have you clocked up so far?

Price on O2 sensors varies from car to car. My B14 Sentra's O2 sensor (Bosch) cost around RM300, but some may cost higher depending on make and model.

Dude, I suggest you take your Accord to another trusted mechanic to check if it's really the O2 sensor that's giving problems. If he can confirm that, only then go to buy the part.

As to which shop to go to, it really depend on where you are, man. If you're in PJ area, by all means go to PH Auto.

Actually, to install the O2 sensor is very easy... Plug and play only... But the resetting of the ECU part after installing it will require some expertise...

try give those shops a call and ask for prices 1st. survey !!
and also call the PH auto. so if they sell more expensive, u can bragain at least roughly u know how much is the price. later they cut throat and sell rm100-200 more expensive even though is cheaper than what honda said.

Cocklea, it might not be the sensor's fault, mileage definitly too low for it to fail, unless you're driving around with a monster of an engine with exhaust temps over 700F laugh.gif

My dad's company Kia Sportage also have an O2 sensor problem and it also costs RM 1000+ to repair. Luckily first time it was under warranty. Before the sensor was repaired the engine is like struggling for air/fuel and can die fire.

Rm1100 is too much for a O2 sensor. Got to another Honda SC and see what they say.

That's why I said, try other SC. Not all the SC has the same price.

If it fails, get either a denso or bosch, both of them are as good.

I have a car that's gone through more than a couple of o2 sensors already. Usually when the sensors fail, the car gives off a very choking sulphuric smell when stationary and if the engine is running. Stinks like rotten eggs. Last time the sensor failed, everytime I parked the car and got out, it would be the first thing I smelt...

Yeah, that's true about 02 sensors, they don't last that long, quite delicate I must say. I wonder why they never invented something better to tackle this problem.

Actually they have. It's already a surprised that it lasted as long as it did. Imagine, the sensor has to be sensitive enough to compare O2 levels inside and outside of the exhaust and at the same time must withstand between 700-1000 degrees C for a few years worth of driving.

So if it fails after 4 years, I consider it a pretty damn strong component. Even stainless steel extractors and exhaust manifolds can fail earlier than the O2 sensor.

Well, my jazz has 2 sensors at the exhaust manifold. One placed before and another one after the catalytic converter. I changed my extractor twice and de-cat. Honda SC will have their software in their laptop to be plugged to your ECU onboard thru a serial port under your dahsboard at the driver side. Well, the software showed DTE errors when analysing my eCU after i changed my exhaust system. But after erased it and reset and recalibrate my ECU. It's fine again. Reason is that the sensor being detached before for my case. The mechanic at my SC even ask me to drive around with him on the laptop monitoring my ECU to check everything is okay before reset and recalibrate my ECU. Same thing i rebored my throttle body and screwed up my TP sensor. That Honda SC is at Ampang. They give best service compare to any other SC. thumbup.gif

As for your case, maybe you should pay another visit to other SC for 2nd opinion since the SC you went dont even know how to monitor your ECU through their notebook. doh.gif

get from kedai potong. Engine light doesn't necessary mean is the O2 sensor spoil, is is just telling you that there is a problem. You need to use a Logger Reader in service center to get the error code. From the code, it will tell you which part of your system giving problem, then from there you need to pin point what is causing the problem.

Call up Arman Autocare in Ampang, they can post it your way or install it for you in their garage.
