Hi,

I could not believe I would be posting here. Its something a lot of people hope for but when rubber hits the road, a lot of doubt creeps in.

My wife just got a promotion to work in Singapore. Its a permanent role not contractual. She is happy for sure. Basically her pay in singapore is more than what she earns in in malaysia + my salary in Malaysia. But we also know spending in singapore is also quite high.

1. Apartment - SGD4.2k
2. School International SGD 2k
3. Transport to work SGD 1k (not planning to get a car yet)
4. Living expenses Approximately SGD5k
5. Pre-school SGD1k

Basically if she remains in Malaysia, her pay will be in MYR(not sgd-lower after conversion). But with my salary we could still live very comfortably in malaysia as compared to Singapore.

but we are looking at future of our kids. We believe there could be more opportunity for them there. That said all looks good except for me.

I also just got a "promotion". If you guys reads between the line, yeah my wife earns much more than my. but that has never been an issue between us. Her career progression would be much better than mine as well as company she is working in.

I guess my question would be, is it easy for me to find a job here in singapore. Currently i am in the lower end of 5 figure. i am not looking to earn 10k SGD. maybe around 7K to make it worth while. else after tax my take home would be maybe 5k. Then it would be better for me to stay at home and take care of the kids. maybe look at investment. Currently i am in service(white collar). are there anything else i can do in singapore?

this coming true is something that my wife has been looking forward to. She came from a humble back ground. Never studied overseas. So she really looking forward to it. as for me, hmm i am quite reluctant. giving up at my age would make it very difficult for me to look for a job in the future.

while she is excited, she also realize a lot will rest on her. but at our age, its now of never. also we do not have any more commitment in malaysia. House/car all paid off.

seriously need as much advise as i can now. if i have not covered any other angle, please feel free to fill me up. its really a big step for us. getting cold feet.

If your wife new package cover relocation, housing allowance, school fees, etc can seriously consider. Women earning more than men are getting common dy, no big deal - you don’t brag about your earnings to everyone anyway

You can slowly move together with your kids once she has settle in. Just short term separation at first. If your company has option for you to take 1 year sabbatical leave, apply for it. At least if your search for new job in SG doesn’t work out you still have job back in Msia to go back to

How old are you anyway?
*
thanks for the suggestion. yeah its worth while asking my boss, even though i suspect the chances of it happening is rather slim.

its a local package. so basically covering just the employment visas. in any case we just made a budgeting comparing current and moving to singapore. he saving is pretty much the same maybe 20% less in singapore (after converting to SGD). however we would not be able to enjoy the things we have in Malaysia.

for now, the main priority to for me to find apply for jobs in singapore to test the market. anything else will depend on it. told her i am not confortable if she is the one brining in the bacon. right now in malaysia i am pretty independent with my on expenses. she understands that.

we are both in our early 40s.

Maybe let her settle down first? Things may or may not work out for her in SG since it is a new environment. Give it a few months.
*
yeah. the plan is by end of this year. she will probably go first. good thing about her work she can work for limited time remotely. due to tax, she needs to be in Singapore for the at least 180 days which translates to 3 weeks there and maybe 1 week back in malaysia

Congrats!
When we just got married, my wife earned more than me too. Nothing surprising here

My own view on things, without knowing much else on your situation:
- Since you're earning >RM10k now, I assume you're pretty capable too and will eventually be able to get a job in SG. No one will know how much your salary may be, but just take the first reasonable offer. Once you have your own work record in SG it gets much easier to progress
- I'm sure you've considered this already, but if you're worried about expenses, it's always better to start lower first. Maybe get a cheaper apartment, or even consider a HDB unit for the first year. Once you get a job yourself you can plan better. Or maybe the list you gave there is a high estimate with some buffer, if that's the case then that's good

Do you have a maid/helper at home now? Need to factor that in if you want the same in SG
*
we both agree that this is a good problem to have. half a leg is already confirm there. now just to find the other half. so yes need to get my resume up and ready. since i won't join her until next year (finger cross), she will rent those short term studio for now. just got her passport renewed today. also we have talked to our insurance agent on our medical card and the VTL, in the event that my kinds and i would like to visit her.

Another lobang is to inquire about internal transfer to SG, if your company is a MNC. I've done that, albeit the other way round.

If you know someone in SG, can recommend you in into their company. Or pass the news around within their network of friends This route is much easier. 70% of jobs are not advertise, according to HR survey
*
spoke to my colleagues. he says it should not be an issue to look for job in singapore. not sure how true it that, but i guess will need to give it a try. my wife colleague says that with the pandemic many have returned back to their home country leaving a vacuum.

just to comment abt xpenses
Why must it be an apartment (private)?
That will jus inflate ur spending
Hdb should be more than enough

How old are your kids?
Is international school necessary?

Bus and mrt are reliable in SG
1k for expenses is a lot

Pre-school, ok, that 1 is what it costs
*
that's just an early budget. now looking for cheaper alternatives especially the apartments.

kids 8 and 1.5. Here my elder kid have been attending international school. worried that he can't coup with the demands of local school. for sure i am open to putting him in the local school.

As an FT your kid will be last in line for spot for any local school behind all the SCs and PRs. Not so much an issue if you don’t mind any school, but if you’re the kiasu kind that wants to put his kid in elite school then there’s basically no chance
*
no la. my kid will die a hundred death. even here, i just want him to do his best. don't need to be the best in everything. that was also my concern in going to local school.

today did a webinar with a school "One World International School". looks promising . at least my kid seems to like it

Reading between the lines, both of you are living a comfortable life in Msia. Your wife is looking forward to the promotion and moving to SG for a breath of fresh air. Career wise, there shouldn’t be any issue for both of you. Singapore is a hub for many things and plenty of career opportunities. You are also at your prime working age and also ready to settle/compromise for something lower.

The part which is missing in your messaging is what do you want for your children especially the one of schooling age. There should be more research and emphasis on the education system in SG and options available including international school / home schooling support. Those considerations may dominate your career objectives. As for the little one, do look up spaces for infant care or nursery. You may require a lot of support if both parents are working.

Your calculations should include these expenses. If I were you, I will not settle for 7k because for 2 international child expenses, that would easily be wiped out - including their insurances.

The other thing is the emotional well being of your wife.  A senior position in SG does invite expectations along. Is not easy to hold everything together but that said, it is also entirely possible.
*
We did look around. Roughly around 18k - 22k annually for international school. OWIS and SFMS. Insurance wise is something that we have yet to clarify. My wife is covered by her company. The more pressing issue is what do we want for the kids. Are the going on the path to PR and Citizenship? I understand that, in the event that they plan to return to Malaysia it would be difficult for them move back to singapore in the future. But i guess we still have time to think about it. We will be going down to Singapore next month to iron out the documentation. We will be registered as dependant. However, I am still not sure if that would be the right move for me yet. Once registered, i won't be able to drive my malaysian car to singapore...or so i was told.

Yeah, my situation is that I plan to rent a room for about 3 months before my family comes over, after which I'll then rent a whole unit. Seems like I can't rent a room in a HDB for just 3 months, because the minimum is 6 months. So as some has advised, condo is the only way to go for that 3 month room rent.
*
let me give you a little perspective.

HDB price is around 3200-3750 for 3 room (12xx soft) CCK and Bukit Panjang Area

Condo(2 room 1000sqft) cck- SGD3200, Condo (3 room -1200sqft)-SGD 3800-SGD4100 - all these are old development

currently property market is very very competitive. according to my agent, its because a lot of development was put on hold due to covid and people wanting to escape lockdown are coming to singapore.

in fact i have to pay 5% above advertise price to secure a place. went to view a place, made an offer less than a week - already taken

Been using MyRepublic for the past few years without issue. Singtel is expensive, and M1 has had pretty bad outages recently and past years
