I still remember a hongki friend ask me a question bout singapore when we discussed about hk independence. How exactly did singapore manage to exit malaysia in 1965? I couldn't answer and to be frank, I don't exactly have any idea regarding the matter. Singapore was initially belonged to Johor Kingdom. Thomas Stamford Raffles arrived in 1819 and signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor, on behalf of the British East India Company, to develop the southern part of Singapore as a British trading post. In 1824 the entire island, as well as the Temenggong, became a British possession after a further treaty with the Sultan. As a result of the 1962 Merger Referendum, on 16 September 1963 Singapore joined with the Federation of Malaya. Which means british has no control over singapore anymore. And by right, singapore should return to Johor. How on earth did singapore manage to exit and become independent state? If this is possible, then why hk, macau and taiwan arent allow to do so? Anyone knows how and why?
