i found out that my box last installed version is wayyyy outdated... using the latest version its buggy...video stuck and crashed the app... huhuhu

player is pre-installed .. not sure what apps
later I will try to download other player from playstore..

You could turn your mac into a PLEX server and setting your external drive as the media source. And install PLEX app into your android box. Your mac will act as a server streaming the media content through your network. The only caviat is your mac (PLEX server) will have to stay “turn on” while you stream from your android box.

hi all sifus, jus wanna ask about this AV quality that the first page seems to indicate differ from one box to another? is my understanding correct?

i dun understd on this... how can it be different? r we saying if i play the same movie file in icore7 vs icore3, there will be difference in graphic quality? that kind of difference?

Scenario 1: Meaning split my HDMI out to RGB and Audio (using a splitter) then RGB to monitor and Audio to speaker.

Scenario 2: Just use the HDMI for video out, and use AV port for speaker if AV port is available.

I have a fire tv stick and I love it! I use it to use Netflix, Spotify, Prime Video, iFlix and Plex (plus Kodi sometimes).
Astro's app is an Android app tho and not an Android TV app, thus it won't work well on it.

But other than that, getting the Amazon fire tv stick was my best purchase at rm130.

Almost (if not all) all Android boxes will support ext HD. Question is how well they perform and what their max storage limit is. Minix boxes are great, go for it.. Get the Minix Neo U9-H + the Minix Neo A3 Airmouse too. Both will handle your needs. Later, if you game, can decide on a gamepad.. 
Trust me.. Unless your friend knows that he'll never want to use regular Android apps etc.. Don't recommend such devices.. They are great if you stick to what they are designed and locked in for.. Once want to go out, then incompatibility issues will crop up..and guess who's going to be called each time to sort issues? Yeah.. You.

I stopped using Kodi for almost a year. It's really frustrating to keep updating sources.

In Kodi , install Quasar add-on for p2p streaming and/or download at same time. But if using mobile sim as internet source , all P2P already throttled by Telcos.

Don't you know mobile prepaid/postpaid sim (unlimited data like unifi mobile/digi unlimited just to mention two as e.g)  can be used in 4g router to provide wireless hotspot for internet and streaming via pc/smart tv/android box etc ?

as for kids solution....

just install youtube kids in the box and let them play all day long...  (*seriously kids will hog the tv in no time)     
and mini bluetooth keyboard+mouse is recommended controller to get as well...
