According to wiki, Singapore official languages are Tamil, Malay, English and Mandarin. So, just curious do they learn Malay language like what we do during primary and sec education? Cause i got one singaporean friend, he is chinese but he knows nothing bout malay.

Older generation Chinese speak Malay well, but newer generation do not learn Malay as it is an optional language. So their Malay language is restricted to their national service exposure, school crowd or working environment. If they do take Malay as an optional language, then they might be more fluent. This also is affecting newer generation Malays as their parents speak English more as a home language. So they depend on their optional language subject in school as their only means of speaking Malay. Some of my Malay colleagues kids don't speak conversational Malay at all other than the common words included in their vocabulary.

I am at Tokyo now and met this Jap girl working at the hotel concierge. She spoke fluent Malay. I asked her how she know and told me she lived in KL for few years.
If few years can speak like that, and local don't know, malu lah .

Bukan sahaja tatabahasa, ejaan dan penulisan, saya memiliki loghat macam orang melayu waktu saya berkomunikasi!
