According to wiki, Singapore official languages are Tamil, Malay, English and Mandarin. So, just curious do they learn Malay language like what we do during primary and sec education? Cause i got one singaporean friend, he is chinese but he knows nothing bout malay.

Older generation Chinese speak Malay well, but newer generation do not learn Malay as it is an optional language. So their Malay language is restricted to their national service exposure, school crowd or working environment. If they do take Malay as an optional language, then they might be more fluent.

This also is affecting newer generation Malays as their parents speak English more as a home language. So they depend on their optional language subject in school as their only means of speaking Malay.

Some of my Malay colleagues kids don't speak conversational Malay at all other than the common words included in their vocabulary.

even ur malay colik kids no speak decent malay?? u mean singaporean malay is it? or include malaysia malay too?

simply say. saya bangsa cina, tetapi bahasa melayu saya dapat A dan saya masih fasih berbahasa melayu sehingga sekarang. bahasa melayu itu bahasa kebangsaan negara saya. oleh itu, saya rajin menghafal kamus dewan waktu saya masih zaman persekolahan dulu. Bukan sahaja tatabahasa, ejaan dan penulisan, saya memiliki loghat macam orang melayu waktu saya berkomunikasi!

SG can't speak Malay to save their lIves.

You ask them to spell Malay words and see - confuse the fuck out of you.

Kena becomes kanna

Agak agak becomes agar agar

singapore's language class other than english is kinda bad. For example i have a friend who complete Chinese language o-level and he got B with it. The result is he can't even speak chinese properly. Then we ask how could he get B.... he said they can bring dictionary inside the exam hall and they can cheat. Also their chinese o-level is like our Form 1 standard.
*
dono chinese, can bring in dictionary and complete o-level and got B?? wtf education is that? i tot singapore v high standard?

I used to know a handful. That's quite a lot considering one usually expect to see them in large cities and not in a small town of Jerlun. Their parents grew up on Malay language but refused to converse in Malay at home with their children.

Maybe they wanted their kids to focus on only English due to fear of their kids not being able to use the language well. Maybe thosr kids somehow got this impression that Malay is some kind of pariah language. Who knows.

The fact that I was raised by a low-rank cop and a housewife who didnt finish school, yet still managed to get a decent grasp on this language used to gave me some sort of superiority complex against people I used to call 'Melayu Murtad'. However,I stopped giving a shit.

eh, so u chinese or malay?
