Saw 5600 selling at $850++ in shopee and Laz today. Good buy, or..?

So I finally jumped into SFF, with a NR200P for my new build - my son's PC one day just refused to boot no matter what I throw at it (old FX6300), thinking its not worth salvaging, so I decided to give my 2600 to him, and make a new one for myself. Yes it's nothing high end, some stuff I got at sale + local pc shops

So immediately after booting and updating drivers etc.. I noticed the idle is on the bit high side (50C+, 40++ only during cooler nights/morning), and it vey quickly shot up to the 95C limit even with simple CPU-Z bench/stress test. Even running SignalRGB at the background keeps the idle temps at 60C+, hence I've deleted it and will switch to a hardware ARGB controller). Coming from my previous 1200 and 2600 that never even got above 80C on full loads, I am very surprised.

Anything I should take a look, or check, other than the usual cooler re-seat, repaste stuff (of which I read is quite decent for a low profile cooler, almost comparable to the Noctua NH-L9i). PBO, Curve Optimizer stuff that I admit haven't really dabbled before? The 5600 should be .. cooler than my previous chips, being more efficient, no?

Granted I haven't try gaming on it, waiting for my 6600xt to arrive.

Previously had builds with Gigabyte DS3H and Asrock B450M Pro4, which aren't really stellar mobos, either, and seems fine. And I've read how the AXP90 is.. decent in a few reviews here and there. Mobo is.. arguably cheapest I can find at a local shop here, right before raya holidays. Not sure if opting for the B550M ITX would've been different, it was like $120 more. Seems pretty similar, other than the PCIE4 support.

But will try Kyronaut / re-seat cooler again.

Because I had to vertically mount my gpu, due to using an ATX PSU, and thus leaving clearance for cpu cooler at 75+mm something. And also out of curiosity, from using tower coolers all these time. This is more like an experiment build with stuff I'm not really familiar with + stuff I have lying around. Yea I don't game much these days, but seeing those temps sure scared me a bit.

Also I read AXP90 reviews are decent, here and there, too. Was thinking perhaps I'd swap the fan to maybe an Arctic 92mm or something.. and I thought the mobo's 60a chokes 8-phase VRM was promising.

Sure there's no BIOS setting I can poke around?

Right, will look into it. Also the fan is a quick fix as well, thanks. Will order one and give it a try.

Indeed, trying a few things out for testing, but probably changing to a new cooler isn't in the cards, at least for the time being. But even if I swap to a SFX psu and mount the gpu horizontally, it'll be a bigger slab of .. gpu radiating heat blocking the intake fans below. I do plan to swap to a 25mm thick fan with better pressure, and put on the vented panel, all after re-seating the cooler with AM4 stock backplate. But I do recall even removing the side panel all together not doing much, iinm. And I currently have a silly R5 240 on which I believe isn't all that hot, either.

It's just.. I can run my ol 2600 on high performance power plan w/out such a spike in temps, and I only have it on a CM 120mm AIO. And how the temps spike from 50 to 90 in just a few seconds during simple stress test is rather surprising.

Indeed, it does seem so. And I did turn off PBO in BIOS, seems.. not much different when in loads. Still spikes up to 95 limit in CPU-Z test. Perhaps.. getting a SFX psu and a tower cooler is the way to go after all. Will do so, if everything else I try fails. This AXP-90 mounting is silly, as well. There's no indicator as to when to stop screwing it in, and I do not want to bend my board, obviously.

Good news, I reseated the cooler, and re-pasted with CM Maker that I still have left, and it seems things have improved - idles are pretty much the same, but I ran Cinebench for like an hour, and it seems it peaked at 80C smth, at 4.3GHz, PBO is enabled, and Curve Optimizer as well. But had the mesh side panel on, though, I have no idea how bad it'll be if I put the TG on and with a bigger gpu, as well. But prolly I can still adjust the cooler seating a bit better, as well as better paste sometime later, too.

Fan is still at max 2800 rpm at those temps, but luckily its not all that noisy. Also I've resorted to hardware rgb controller, too. Helps with idle somewhat. Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Will do it again once my paste order arrives, used whatever I have left in the tube been thinking about thermal pads..

Last month I got my 5600 the price is just what, $10 more expensive? Makes it a no brainer

Ergh kinda tempting to get the 5800X selling cheap in Aliexpress, at 600+. Yea no warranty and stuff, but the last 2600 I bought (which my friend also bought) still works fine. As long as it comes in 1 piece with no bent pins etc..

Yea and when looking at benches, there's really a marginal benefit considering my use of light gaming and general work/browsing etc, anyway. But that.. unexplainable itch of upgrading..

I understand some people had horrendous experience with AM4, like all those USB issues - but I started with 2600, then bought a 1200 cheap for my son's build, then upgraded to 5600 - pretty much no major issues, actually. Also build a few PCs for close friends and family - all seems fine.

Indeed, yes, currently I'm just waiting to see how stuff turns out. Not really planning to get DDR5 anytime soon, so maybe if the 5800X3D drops in prices.. who knows.

Other than the Russia war blowing up into WW3 or new stupid Monkey-covid hybrid virus turns out, that is.

But in Asus ROG own store, I see other than the Crosshair boards, everything else is sold out lel.

Now just need CM to make a tec cooler for Ryzen 7000.. and walla
