Dear k/, I want to set up a paypal account. May I know is it legal in Malaysia? When I was in a foreign country, I want to setup one, but don know how. So, I used debit card all these long. Can paypal be used in malaysia? Anyone mind providing me steps to create one? I have both maybank debit and credit card.

Been using it for years. You will need to verify your credit card when you register IIRC.

Why don't you make an account first and ask later. There's definitely no problems in using PayPal in Malaysia but the conversion rate for foreign currency is slightly higher at PayPal and Malaysia don't get the "Donate" option which lets people send money to someone without any PayPal fees and protection.

paypal in malaysia is useless ...

local account - can use MYR only ... and when pay, can pay merchants in MYR (local merchants only lar) ... vice versa (if you seller registered in malaysia, can only receive MYR)

if want to transact with foreign currency with receiver having paypal account - can just use your cc (or debit card now) without registering for an account

pretty much useless lar that account ...

paypal for safety only ... in case any shit happens, then can ask paypal to reverse transaction

but then, for you to pay in paypal, the seller must have paypal account ... and seller paypal account fee is abit high, charge % commission for every sale ... (most small time sellers rather not have this and stick to normal IBG)

last time, before BNM come kacau, i can use my paypal account like a USD holding bank account (withdraw when rates are nice) and trade with other countries ... now cannot d ... malaysian account can only hold MYR

Follow Below Steps
1) For who is using Maybank Visa Debit ATM Card.

2) I can confirm you can completes it this within 24 hours.

3) You can use anyone credit card or debit card, it’s no need to be own card use for Paypal.

4) Login to www.paypal.com with your Paypal account with your Email & Password.

5) Click on My Account tab, and select Profile and Add/Edit Credit or Debit Card.

6) Edit your details of your Maybank Visa Debit Card and make sure the address is exactly the same as your billing address.
7) You will get a Verification Email through Paypal saying that you have successfully linked your card to Paypal acccount. And now all you have to do is waiting for the code from Maybank2u Description. Wait about ONE DAY before doing the following steps*

8) Login to your Maybank2u.com and click on Accounts & Banking, then click on your Account number for your Account Details.

9) Click on Debit Card History and you will saw an entry with the word “PAYPAL”. The code is the 4 numbers before the word PAYPAL.

Eg: PREAUTH SALE 4911PAYPAL-*EXPUSE DATED 19May2012
Paypal Code : 4911

10) **If you check your account for details of the transaction too early, you might not see the code appear or would not be able to get the code.

11) Log in www.paypal.com and click on Profile, then Add/Edit Credit or Debit Card.

Why don't you make an account first and ask later. There's definitely no problems in using PayPal in Malaysia but the conversion rate for foreign currency is slightly higher at PayPal and Malaysia don't get the "Donate" option which lets people send money to someone without any PayPal fees and protection.
*
Hey guys confirm Malaysia don't have this "Donate" option??

Hi! I am new here. I would like to open a PayPal account.
I have look browse through Lowyat forum and I know that.
Firstly a debit or credit card is required in order to register to
PayPal. But I prefer to use debit card.

In 2007 0r 2009, I can't remember the dates. In order to get a
cheaper rates withdrawal. Any bank that is supported by PayPal
the setting can be edit from using debit card change to directly link
from a bank account.

But in 2014, I saw a thread in Lowyat forum now they limit the
options of certain bank accounts that can directlylink to PayPal.
So now, some banks only use debit card to top up PayPal but cannot
link directly from bank accounts and some certain banks can use a
direct link from bank accounts to PayPal.

One of the banks mention is RHB and they didn't tell about the specific
name of the other banks. I would like that feature which is the bank
account is link directly to PayPal. But that was 4 years ago.
I'm not sure the options settings is still the same or have changed.

So now the question is can you give me a list on what certain bank
can link bank accounts directly to PayPal as well as the highest successful
withdrawal rates and quality friendly top notched service?

Thank you.

I was using public bank, withdrew to my account without any issue and I could use the debit card (atm card) to verify paypal and shop with it. You could instantly see the verification code in the online transaction list thumbup.gif

I saw a thread dated in 2014, some banks do support PayPal.
But, some banks that supported PayPal can't directly link their bank
accounts to PayPal.

They only can give top up in the debit card.
Withdrawing through directly from bank accounts is much cheaper
than debit card.

But this was years ago, I don't know if it's still applies.

I heard that public bank has high & stable PayPal withdrawal success rate.

So are you saying that your public bank account is directly link to your PayPal?

Or are you using debit card to link to your PayPal?

Why do you want to top up with debit card or bank account anyway, it will take days for the fund to be in your account. You could just checkout directly with your debit card, there aren't any extra fees iinm. As for the currency rate, you could go with Paypal's rate during payment or let them bill you with USD etc and you follow your bank rate.

I don't want to top up. Like I said all my info is from years ago.
Years ago info says that withdraw using link direct bank account is cheaper.
I don't know nowadays withdrawal fees.
Since u are a regular & has a 1st hand experience with PayPal & know really
well about the current fees.
I guess that makes my info obsolete.

Checkout means when you pay for something when you shop online or trying to send payment to someone. At least for Public bank since the atm/debit card is linked directly to your bank account, you can just select your debit card and it will instantly deduct the amount from your bank account and pay. Some other bank require you to "top up" your debit card by transferring funds from your bank first.

And no when you try to pay on Paypal using your bank account, there's a waiting period of at least 3 working days. Well you could top up the funds on your Paypal account with your bank account few days in advance if you know you are going to shop next week, something like store credit. TBH no one uses fund on their account to shop anymore nowadays unless you are selling stuff online.

Not sure about other bank debit card but as I said previously that the Public bank's atm card that you would get when you open a new account is also a debit card. It's linked directly to your PBB bank account and you can pay as long as you have enough money in your bank account. If not just ask someone to transfer to your account or use atm.

Last time when I used CIMB debit card, it's on a separate account so I have to do online transfer from my CIMB account to the debit card account before buying stuff.

You could add CIMB to your Paypal but I never tried to withdraw to or from the account so I can't be sure it works. CIMB debit card works tho but it was troublesome when I used it as you need an extra step. It might have changed, never used the card for over two years since I got the public bank one

Just ask them to allow online transaction when you are at the bank as they are all disabled by default since few years ago iinm.

some people use Paypal as

- Withdraw money from Google Adsense (blogger/apps dev/etc.)
- Withdraw money from Clixbank (affiliate thing)
- Buying things from Lazada (cos sometimes cc/db card jammed hard especially when LZD on campaign)
- Buying things from Amazon/Ebay/Aliexpress (etc.)
- Transfer money from Payooner to Paypal or vice versa.

tl;dr : Paypal is actually useful for who make money online with Amazon Affiliate/Google Adsense, etc.

Majority use as business intended.

But some said if u dont notify bank, later they will not allow ur overseas transaction

oh ya, it depends on bank. I use PBB debit card for almost 10 years, no need to do settings. But I saw MBB and HL got oversea transaction in setting page. You just try to link in Paypal, it will auto withdraw 1usd from your debit card. If success, meaning no need to do settings.

Yeah you can use it in Malaysia, but beside all the advices mentioned above, when creating your account, remember to do the following things to protect yourself from being hacked: Create strong passwords and don't use the same ones for multiple accounts,
Use 2-factor authentication.

Trying to link my maybank debit card with paypal as I'm trying to buy something online but I'm having the biggest of issues with it. Already enabled "Debit Card E-commerce activation" on the maybank website but I'm still having issues with it.
