Im thinking to make a thread discussing on what and how you guys display ur collection.
So everyone from figurine and gashapon, gundam, and others can join sharing ideas.

----
I'm new in trading figures scene. wave.gif got few of em already and thinking to get a proper case to protect them from my nephew and niece.
Did a scouting at ikea, and found this Detolf retailing at rm199

Any other alternatives? advice on getting cheaper case or even customizing it? Do share your thought and experience smile.gif

I'll love to have casing to display my models.. But too bad im living outside. and often change place. Most of my models are left on my speakers.. cpu around my workspace in my small rented room..

and collecting dust... U know kl is damn dusty..!!~~ 2 days only u can see layers of dust on the model. crap.

Thinking to use perspex to cover my next model.

the Detolf already famous in the modellins scene =) but in my opinion it takes up way too much space coz my room's veryyy tiny XD all my models are placed on wall-mounted shelves.

1st and foremost, is rm200 worth its price?
the Detolf size is 163cm H x 43 W x 37cm L

Anyone did custom made one, using glass/acrylic?

My cabinet just got 1 tier of glass, now already full, some is on top of the cabinet. Also thought of getting the Detolf, but no more room for another display case oredi.

Actually i was thought of using DannyChoo method, but it also need to stay put at outside.

hi e-jump,

I am a fan in die cast cars ( die cast thread) and i have 4 of the detolf cabinets..I think this cabinet is quite strong and well built..price is cheaper than last year by RM50 too thumbup.gif

on the whole,it has 4 shelves, but i did modify mine to make it double (8 shelves as i found it to be a bit of a waste if it is at 4 shelves) at Jln Chan Sow Lin ( engineering works place ) in KL..they added 4 shelves (metal rods) for me ..including workmanship about rm40+ ..glass u have to cut yourself at shops..1 piece is about RM5..

one word of advice using this cabinet, over the time..it is not dust proof...you need to wipe your figures/cars etc..as the door has a gap where dusts can go in over the period of time doh.gif hehe..but overall..it's a good investment thumbup.gif

That Detolf is quite nice, but I think for gashapon/trading figure, the height of tiers seem wasted, due to small size of gashapon/trading fig (maybe more suitable for taller figure;1/6 or1/8)

hi sealsmaster,

In my opinion,I think not worth it lor..not to discourage you from buying/shipping it back but the package itself weighs a whopping 40kg+ icon_question.gif ..the package is kinda long..maybe 4 feet by 2 feet..i takes 2 person to carry it from IKEA to the car park using the lift.. rclxub.gif ..

We can use Ka Ken's idea, adding more glass tier, so we can add moar gashapons and short figures.

hmm.. hmm.gif conclusion is that better go for custom made one loh!! Actually i'm being thinking of custom made also but half way, fall in love to IKEA cabinet.. wub.gif

I check around local furniture shop and find out most of the 'Good Looking' cabinet are damn expensive like around RM800 ~ RM1K++ at least. shocking.gif Whereas IKEA cabinet only cos around RM200 plus i like the design, simple and less wooden parts. thumbup.gif At least this is my notion why i intended to get one loh.. brows.gif

Anyhow, should have survey around now for custom made one from now on.. cool.gif

Thanks a lot. notworthy.gif rclxms.gif

I think what Sealmaster is refering to is the Billy book case which is RM200+. You can also add customisable glass door if you are scared of dust collecting but that will round up to RM500+. Still....the book case looks good. I'm saving money for one.

detolf looks cool, but for me i am renting a room, it is too troublesome if i need to move..so i can only opt for wall shelf.

1/6th figures with all those fabrics are not easy to clean once they gather dust. i got no choice but to keep them in their box. sad.gif

Here's mine. The content's do change from time to time.

mini tour..

At the ground floor, you will see the construction bay for Perfect grade GP01.

1st floor is purely for gundams. mg wing0,mg ez8,mg F91, there is a mg God hanging from a string to save space, silver painted double x .....

2nd floor is a mix of patlabor, gashapon figures, an evangelion hanging from a string.

3rd floor will be my finished and partly finished 1/24 car models. Car's include skyline xanavi gt-r, kansai bnr32, trueno ae86,altezza, honda today (you're under arrest), rx-8. This floor also has several tiny tomica metal cars.

On the roof top , you'll meet 1/60 Freedom, mg strike freedom, mg freedom (hk expo edition) and a mg rx-78-4.

Several postcards of jolin are on the side of the 2nd and 3rd floor.
-------------------------

Small brown cabinet at the side to keep all the spray paints, gunze/tamiya acrylic paints and thinners, glues, decal softeners and other materials or brushes.

On the chair are the boxes of models i haven't moved to somewhere else. It's naturally there. I didn't purposely put it there just for the picture.

carpathia, yes a tiny little bit of dust still get's in, as there is a gap of about 2mm at each side of the door. Definitely much less that leaving it outside. A tip!.. keep your place clean,sweep/mop often which helps.

e-jump, paiseh, I don't even know what is a detolf. sweat.gif . I bought this from a furniture shop ( can't remember puchong or the furniture center at the side of sg besi near sri petaling already). Definitely not ikea.

No brand 1 la but wub.gif fell in love wif it when i saw it. yeah.. I like the white top, bottom and the lighting colors blush.gif. There is a pyramid shaped crystal that give out the pink light on the 3rd floor.

A lock is provided on the top right of the door.

The bad thing about this is the white backbone at the center that runs from the base to the top which takes up some space.

checked ikea website and now I know what's a detolf. tongue.gif Rm199 , it's not bad waad.. Seems to give more space than mine a well brows.gif . if you want white, just get white spray/ hand paint + matt/gloss clear coat and diy! Lights can diy also.

Ai.. if not mistaken, i bought this for Rm600 sad.gif sakit. Size wize, I can't remember but I'll get the measurements tomorrow or something. At least it's quite solid flex.gif, if you hold the top and try to shake it, no swaying lor.

below is detolf picture from ikea website.. rolleyes.gif

Sorry to dig up an old post but regarding IKEA DETOLF, how did you guys manage to bring it home? I mean they state "We pack it so it fits even into your Kancil", but I saw the packing it's taller than me, so unless you put it on the roof, it won't fit a Kancil. Even normal car boot doesn't have enough space for it so I'm guessing putting it lying on the front to back passenger seat is the only way, but they 47kg package needs 2-3 person to carry it, how will any normal car fit the cabinet & 3 person??? I don't wanna pay RM65 for the delivery as time of delivery is also an issue.

Also how many people does it take to assemble the whole cabinet? Any better alternatives to IKEA?

I never bought big items from Ikea and I went there alone just to find out the facts, yes I went alone thinking i can get a cabinet back! There's a couple there looking at the cabinets they were also thinking how they gonna buy it...

Built 3 in one go.... the last one took me approx 15 minutes to complete... all done fixing done by my lonesome.. you just need a sturdy wall to layout all the glass.. I modify the building instructions/method, to built it from the bottom up... not top down (and flip it) as suggested, otherwise will be hard to complete it by yourself...

1 unbuilt, just just need 2 average male or just 1 strong person (+ trolley) to carry ...

That must be your face in ur avatar. Carry 3 by urself! Can post us ur modded instructions for 1 weakling?

Can you give me a measurement on the unbuilt package height? I wanna see if it fits in the boot not.

And do they have White? I only saw Light Brown & Black. Also I heard they were once a promotion for the cabinets RM99 each, anyone know if they doing it again?

I also saw another display got 5 deck, it has something like metal door with locks, but dust gets in more easily due to the gaps. Anyone know how we can mod the Deltof to make it more dust proof? Also how you install lighting? Need drilling, cutting etc?

The cabinet does it come with wheels at bottom? I scare once build it cannot move it...

carry one by one to the designated area (use a trolley, 40kg++ is nothing..)...but build 3 in one go, faster with experience, I reckon I can build one in 10 minutes now...

Instructions.... my method for lonesome construction.. use at your own risk, I use my own terms (should be evident)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Or
just follow Ikea's instructions and get another able-body person to flip it over as instructed

You could install wheels (does not come with it) instead of the supplied legs... to your preference...

unbuilt in the cardboard box is about 162cm in height. Lowering the front passenger seat (to the back seats/boot), an average car should fit.

lights for it from Ikea cost about RM45 or so... you need some drilling or sturdy skrew driver.. (my opinion..totally not worth...led lights better)

The plastic legs/stand on the Detolf are pretty smooth (not much traction)... besides I have ceramic and hard plastic composite floors (very resistant to scratches)...

Ikea... there are branches in the main Island of Honshu (entered Japan probably 2 years back).... The ones I bought are in good old North Borneo (with some price premium) and not by Ikea... Those are tempered glass... quite resistant to shock... but once break,... can shatter to a thousand pieces

I'm planning to have some customized arcylic display casing made as ready made casings are relatively expensive for big sizes but still can't figure out a standard size, hope you guys can give some ideas so in near future i might be able to have them built in bulk quantity if anybody interested. The reason I want arcylic casing is for "Double Protection", putting them in cabinet isn't good enough but putting them in casings inside a cabinate definately helps keep the dust out.

Right now am thinking of making casing for 12" Figures that can accomodate single or multiple figures. I want to standardize the size so it can accomodate most figures.

Casings for other stuffs will also be considered but right now i want to have somekind of standard on the dimensions.

hi e-jump,

I am a fan in die cast cars ( die cast thread) and i have 4 of the detolf cabinets..I think this cabinet is quite strong and well built..price is cheaper than last year by RM50 too  thumbup.gif

on the whole,it has 4 shelves, but i did modify mine to make it double (8 shelves as i found it to be a bit of a waste if it is at 4 shelves) at Jln Chan Sow Lin ( engineering works place ) in KL..they added 4 shelves (metal rods) for me ..including workmanship about rm40+ ..glass u have to cut yourself at shops..1 piece is about RM5..

one word of advice using this cabinet, over the time..it is not dust proof...you need to wipe your figures/cars etc..as the door has a gap where dusts can go in over the period of time  doh.gif  hehe..but overall..it's a good investment  thumbup.gif

may u tel me where the shop at Jln Chan Sow Lin?ANy detail infor?hehehe

thank you ya

As my interest in Zoids dwindle, I sold some of the limited/exclusives items. Thus, the photos on the 3rd cabinet is not updated anymore.

I'm happy with my current collection, got the complete regular NJR's, NAR's (officially released), Genesis Zoids, 1/24 scale Zoids. I'm still hunting the last 4 Fuzor Zoids then I'm done wink.gif

Cheers,

Added on February 10, 2009, 9:01 pmI'm curious how you got those Mazingers shipped over here? How did they manage to pack it and did the Custom hold the item?

Thanks advocado.

Hahahaha no more secrets! Only not shown on my post are my Wife & Kids TFs such as MPs, TFTM & TFA plus pokemons and McDonalds Happy Meal Toys. The display cabinet is in their room will take picture of it on my next holiday.

I'm not from Malaysia, I'm from the Philippines but employed there in Malaysia. Currently on Job assignment here in Vietnam.

The huge Mazingers, et al are manufactured in the Philippines for Japanese market only. Those statues posted above are backdoor version thus quite cheap when I got them. But the guy (Yexel) now selling it at US$1700/piece including shipping.

Btw, you still have the Aoshima Black Shin Getter 2? I'm interested can you PM me price + shipping cost to Saigon, Vietnam. Thanks.

So all your stuffs are in Philipines or Malaysia? Is it easy to get toys over there or you have to buy online and post.

Would be great if you can carry some giant mazingers over to malaysia in your next trip i will be interested in putting them infront of my house.

Ur wife collect transformers? Good on you. I assume you say just MP, TFTM & TFA plus pokemons and McDonalds Happy Meal Toys are actually another huge collection.

The Black Getter 2 was actually offered from a guy in Singapore asking me to sell them, the chogokins price were much lower than here but seems Malaysians are not that into Chogokins, so I gave up. You can try Singapore I'm still seeing Black Getters in Shops.

Yup all my Gokins are in the Philippines. We have many Hobby Shop in the Philippines so it fairly easy to get except for exclusive items w/c they bring in small quantity. The price is cheaper too coz of competition, also, some individual bringing in direct from Hong Kong so you have choices.

Hahaha I can't imagine how I'm going to bring those huge Mazinger in Malaysia biggrin.gif I need to book a separate seat for it tongue.gif

Philippine Chogokin collectors not that many but quite active in the forums and meet ups. Bigger market is Gundam, Sentai/PR & TFs. Moderate number of collectors for Bust/Statues and anime figs.

My wife is a big fan of Optimus Prime. My kids are your normal kiddos that what they watch on the movies & TVs they want to have it. Good thing now that after they played w/ it they stored it back to the cabinet.

The Black Shin Getter 2 never reached Philippines shore, still available in HLJ but saw your price before and it's cheap. Should have contacted you when I was in KL last Oct 2008. Anyway, Aoshima products is not on my priority list as I'm concentrating on Bandai Soul Of Chogokin GX Series.

Cheers,

the ikea light is RM70 which took a chunk right out of me moneyflies.gif cry.gif
It's more economical to install ur own light such as those short pendaflour.
Supposingly u will need to drill the top of the detolf plank to install the light but i used a metal wire and tied it to the light and hold the metal wire that sticked out on top with a big clip.(i'm not very good with drills) sweat.gif

but the halogen light i bought cannot fit into the hole.
drilling is required bcos there's no small hole for the screw to hold the light only got 1 big hole.
I didn't know there's halogen light selling at RM50 a pair.hmm.gif
Ikea only selling either 1 light or three of them in 1 pack.
Maybe i bought the wrong light.

Just saw Ikea detolf price reduced from $199 to $179.

On lighting, you can also consider using those battery operated 3-led lights (white light, use 3 AAA batteries). These have double sided tapes for fixing on the cabinet shelf. Cosway used to sell 2 for $7.90 (if not mistaken since quite some time back). Also seling at "pasar malam".

I saw somewhere the glue is special & not suppose to be sold to public I think it's hazardous when not applied.

Where did you buy the arcylic sheets, the size & how much they cost?

Cutting the sheets perfectly needs some skill & good cutting tools.

today i will go to hardware shop see if they sell the acrylic cement and cutting tools or not. i will check this evening after work.

I bought 2 sheets 4'x6' transparent at a advertising trading warehouse. purposely go there ask if they sell 1 or 2 sheets or not. I bought it at rm110 per sheet. 3mm thickness. Lucky my car avanza can fit in the whole sheet. bought it last saturday.

Anyhow...i am selling off 1 sheet of acrylic cos just found i only need 1 sheet only. miscalculation.

a.k.a as dichloromethane CH2Cl2, most chem/bio labs should have it..

Its carcinogenic... so long you don't swallow.. it'll be fine... I've cut and stick acrylic since 6 years ago.. very little is needed to melt/reassemble the molecules of the acrylic sheets... With clean cuts of say 0.5m only 1 or 2 droplets are required.

Detolf cost rm179, those 2 cabinets esp the one on top would cost at least rm500. But they are bigger.

I saw a nice round shape glass cabinet at shop beside Harvey Norman at Curve, looks pretty nice so i went it to check the price and realise it's over rm3k... same size as Detolf just more stylish.

You can try similiar case in METROJAYA where they sell those rements. Price are not cheap for these small size case which don't have any covers. Better buy a cabinet in your local furniture shop or get a detolf.

anyone can recommend me a good simple and not so hot lighting solution for detolf cabs?

I just bought NON lights from Ikea but now i am having second thoughts about it. im afraid of the heat and long exposure of the bulbs might "melt" or the deform whatever plastic models placed on the top tier.

EDIT: just bought Osram Dot-It today from ACE Hardware because that was the only one type they had (damn those unhelpful staff at ACE Midvalley). Not happy with it though because the lighting not that good enough. Looking at these two products and I wonder if they have it here at MY:
1. Sylvania® Golden Dragon® Bright White LED Light
2. Rite Lite® Wireless 5 LED Puck Lites
Anyone have come across that or maybe can suggest something better? ive been wasting too much cash already doh.gif

Bro nice aquarium tank as case for display. But I thought Chinese belief we are not supposed to put aquarium tank in our room? Because I'm interested to get it as my cabinet display too.

Put a nice backdrop and lighting, take a high quality picture, upload the picture, then destroy the thing..... like that waste no space and yet has the highest display value
