As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Carrick not effective in this match.
But would prefer mata instead now that we need 2 goals to win.

Is Rojo + Jones the CB pairing thru out the winning streak? Is Smalling injured or simple not good this season? Interesting that Mourinho got Jones to perform.

Our passing is a mess now. Before the penalty United play with real confident, after penalty everyone is nervous.

squandered a good chance

gave away a penalty by dabbing

struggled to hold possession

then should hav been sent off by that wrestling move

Herrera was on fire today! He was magnificient!

Fellaini was so cool and relax, he make Pogba look like crap.

Miki, Martial was also superb.

Mata, super useless.

And today was also not Valencia's usual performance but he got lucky with the assist.

Overall great job, POO didn't even deserved to be draw. They just got lucky with PogCrap dabbing defensive.

Manchester city walked away with 3 points
Arsenal get a draw
Now Liverpool also takes away a point from Old Trafford

Pretty much why the reason for 6th position...

Liverpool play the right strategy and out run United by big mileage.

Still need to endure Emirates, Etihad, White Hart Lane. I think Champions league spot would be tough....

I am dealing with it. I accept the decision is what it is and move on. Guess who's the one not accepting that it is wrong despite evidence.
*
Oh, you're just dealing it in a wrong way. Let me help you.

1. Deal with it here

or

2. Go teach here..

Always want to be the victim... Okay, you win, Liverpool would have won if not for that pesky ref whom is a United fan and the premier league which does not want Liverpool to win the league..

This came from a liverpool supporter :
"mu got away again with yet another offside goal...."

Really?  Offside?
*
Rooney's cross wasn't offside, Felly wasn't offside when header the post, Valencia wasn't offside when he put the ball to Ibra, Ibra wasn't offiside when he scored. How was the goal offside? As usual want to play victim card again.

Oh wait, he wants to pull back further, to the throw in and subsequent pass. But then, the goal was still an onside goal as it was scored by an onside player....

That's what I've been saying all along, but everyone here seems to be focused on the goal rather than the entire passage of play. If the decision was called then the entire play would've been invalidated. The subsequent moves were of course perfectly fine.

There's no victim card here. I don't think Liverpool deserves to win on the balance of play, but games are not won on the balance of play either. The entire 2nd half was all United and draw was probably a fair result. Bad decisions happen all the time, what baffles me is the ego of some people won't even allow for a civil discussion of the game and constantly pulling out long played out victim jokes to deflect discussion.

Arsenal get a draw
Now Liverpool also takes away a point from Old Trafford

Pretty much why the reason for 6th position...

Liverpool play the right strategy and out run United by big mileage.

Still need to endure Emirates, Etihad, White Hart Lane. I think Champions league spot would be tough....

do you realize that you are on MU thread? what do you expect? you lot also have this kind of ego what... the gap is so close and it appear Valencia is pulling back when the ball is kicked to him. and it take another few more pass that lv should have block it before it went in. how can it be an offside goal. and how would you know if even the call being made that time, we wont score. word of advice... stay out of opponent thread otherwise bear the consequences. hahaha.. kalau tak mahu panas punggok, jangan buka tered orang.

what about that rooney's volley from mata's header that mignolet blocked that was judged to be offside by the linesman? We should be given a corner and who knows we would score then?

Seems pretty comical that everyone but United fans can see it. Watch the shade under their feet for the line. Tell me every pundit and neutral fans out there are lying.

*
So the point of this is? That refs make mistakes? It goes both ways, every team has incorrect calls going for/against them.

That fans will support their own team and take the "lucky" calls, even if it's a mistake? Whether fans agree it's a mistake or not, it does not change the result.

And if you want to talk about supporters and civil discussion, I've seen more than a few cases of people jumping into other supporter threads and getting burned. It's not limited to here, and pool supporters are not exempt from doing it either.

Not sure if it's limited to liverpool, but it seems like classic ABU mentality - if it's a call for United that they don't like then all the "ref sampah" / "FA belongs to United talk comes out".

If it's a call against United, all they do is laugh and say good ref / finally / etc.

Nobody wants to drop by to have a "civil discussion" when the call is unlucky for us or goes against us rolleyes.gif

Thank god he did not come to United to replace LvG.

Imagine if he pulled the "I'm nearing the end of my career" BS this early in his 1st season here.. puke blood

I got to admit, the concerns some people (including me) had about Mou being overly defensive and killing young players looks pretty off the pace so far.

Maybe. Sometimes it's good to sub a player out (get a better player on, or take pressure off them), other times it's good to leave them on the pitch (if they can handle the pressure and learn from it, or if a tactical/formation change is more important).

Carrick also had a bad game, and he's 35 i.e. sub him out and you save him for another day.

Once Carrick came off, the bench did not have any CM available to replace Pogba.

Aside from a few games early this season, has he ever looked like a proper CM for us or anyone else?

Especially one that can provide enough cover and control while the 4 guys in front attack a pool team that can be dangerous on the counter and pressed us enough that Carrick struggled to do anything of note in the 1st half?

JM has generally brought him on as a sub to try and have more height and numbers for aerial play (attacking and/or defensively), but I don't think anyone would say he came on this game to help our defending.

Or to put it another way: If he had come on as a sub for Pogba to partner for Herrera in CM, do you think anything would have been gained?

If Bastian or another specialist CM had been on the bench and you say sub, that would be tempting to agree to.

its hard to say what fellaini can contribute playing wt herrera but im very confident he can give more than pogba on this particular game. pogba really struggle and wasteful entire game. he slow down when attack and put united under pressure few times defensively.

fellaini different type of CM if being compared to carrick.. if any he is more similar to pogba

it proved that jm value pogba quite highly.
liverpool was pressing hard when we had the ball, so we need someone able to hold up ball without being overrun at midfield
and as usual, valencia is doing all the hardwork on the right, jm should give him a big contract as rewards

Jomo's building a team around Pogba. So must trust and protek him.

If only Valencia's cross is actually aiming at someone and don't block by defenders. It seems like most of his cross is a cross just because you he have to cross it. It ends up at place that it's hard to challenge for the ball.

crossing is not that easy, considering he runs at full speed to delivery the crosses.
also last night zlatan score due to his assisted crossing.

his energy and relentless running puts all young players to shame.

Yeah my sentiments exactly. Gutted we didn't get 3 points.

Really hope Pogba can bounce back.

Games now becoming no room for simple mistake. You let Liverpool scored first, then the next moments they put 10 players in front of goals. But these are the must win matches, for league, and for club/fans. Pogba and Miki got 1 on 1 with goalie, but none were converted..

In City case, bad defending from Kompani long absence. Otamendi x bleh pakai. Bad decisions putting Zabaletta in mid field. If they don't make new purchase in January, good for United.

*
Not true. It is because that he is high class blackie. Too expensive to bench him.

he's attacking mid with attacking role (get into the box quickly)
he's dangerous in penalty box, both box laugh.gif
his aerial ability fcking godlike lvl .. he's plan B
i dont care how ugly we play, as long we can score goal and 3 pts

Agreed. He's got a good passing ability, but I don't recall him being noteworthy in terms of interceptions, marking, or tackling. If anything his style of play (likes to take on players and adventurous passing) makes it risky to have him in a defensive role in case he concedes possession at the wrong place/time.

Not as risky from a card-collecting point as Fellaini or Scholes, but not a strong defensive player either.

And looking at his performances in Euros and for us this season, it seems playing him as a DM is not ideal.

His best form generally seems to have been since Carrick and Herrera were there to provide defensive cover and he could float in the middle and try to unpick opposing teams.

Surely JM will look to get a DM in the next 6 months, since Carrick is the closest we have to one and he's 35

if not mistaken. jm is building the team around pogba. and he also gives pogba the freedom to do whatever he wants. much like ronaldinho in barca. of course pogba is nothing close to ronaldinho. just saying the freedom jose gives him. he is still young. hopefully we get a new dm or tfm to try that dm role soon

Lyon agree deal to sign Memphis Depay from Man Utd.

Antoine Griezmann on Manchester United's radar as a potential summer transfer target.

He was a CM or a DM, but it seems both LVG and JM were not impressed enough by him to give him an extended run in the starting 11.

On top of that, it seems even his teammates indicated they didn't see anything about him that was better than the guys he replaced. Considering he replaced Anderson, Fletcher (after serious illness and 2 years out), and Cleverley.. .that sounds pretty bad.

Not the usual league where Malaysians follow though. But yes you are right. That's where the money is.

Pay crazy high salaries to old players because they can haha.
Rooney is considered a legend but in this competitive league, it is not sustainable to keep him benched at that pay wage. He has the fighting spirit of Red Devil but his touches and kills doesn't do him well

Shaw will be back, no doubt about it. Now with Valencia in form and darmian good defensively, i don't think it's a good time to take risk at changing players unless they are super tired or out of form.

I have a feeling that this will be another "100 shots attempted but 0 goals" match for MU.

But I really hope I'm wrong.

I always see this pattern. Everytime any of the Top4 teams lost or drop points, MU don't take the chance to close the gap. They too will drop points.

I'm not really a big fan of him, especially for the price the club paid to buy him. After half a season I don't see why the club paid so much to get him. Over rated.

2-0 hull, not playing well but win nevertheless

1-1 liverpool, not top of their game and salvage a point

1-1 stoke, hardly a good game, on brinks of losing

klopp high pressing game and mark hughes physical selangor bus tactic, both works well against united with their current form.

unless they change the playing approach, or player form improve, it is just a matter of time losing the game

they got a goal, we didn't until the end. United didn't finish off their chances..

Pogba needs to get his confidence back, and soon.. We're going into the final third of the season, we need all players to step up, especially defenders, don't feel confident at the back at all..

now it looks as if Valencia is covering the whole right flank defensively & offensively, almost running his socks off in last 2 matches..

at this work rate, i dont think there is many time left in his legs, too taxing...

they got a goal courtesy of mata

yes we had plenty of chances but just couldnt take it, but on balance of play we should have taken all 3 points easily

it's our fault for not winning

defend is a whole team task, not only the back four.

despite the fact defenders have been shaky last 2 matches, those 2 goals conceded is the directly result of player mistake, and it is not coming from the defender. fact.

RECORD! ROONEY IS REDS' ALL-TIME TOP SCORER

He's done it! Wayne Rooney has surpassed Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton to become the club's leading goalscorer of all time.

The United captain reached his remarkable tally of 250 strikes when he netted a stunning late equaliser against Stoke City in Saturday's 1-1 draw.

Sir Bobby Charlton told ManUtd.com: "It’s over 40 years since I scored the last of my 249 goals for Manchester United, so I must admit that I have become used to the honour of being the club’s all-time top goalscorer!

"We have had some incredible strikers here at Old Trafford and they have scored a lot of goals, but it has been fairly obvious for a while now that Wayne Rooney was going to be the one likeliest to break my record, and now that day has come, I would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record. However, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books.

"He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England. It has been great to watch him every week since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2004; he set the tone with a wonderful hat-trick on his debut and he has thrilled us all in the years since, going on to enjoy a hugely successful career.

"I was 35 when I retired. Wayne is only 31 and still going strong, so I don’t think he’s done by a long stretch yet. He continues to show that he can contribute goals, assists and performances whenever called upon, he will raise the bar even further before he calls it a day. Now he’s the man to beat, and I can’t see anybody doing that for a long, long time."

Rooney the record-breaker was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson at the age of 18 after rising to stardom at Everton and has been a consistent contributor to the Reds' scoresheet since netting a hat-trick on his debut, in the 6-2 Champions League victory over Fenerbahce on 28 September 2004.

Sir Alex told ManUtd.com: "I would like to say huge congratulations to Wayne on reaching this milestone. It is no mean feat to score so many goals and he breaks a record that has stood for over 40 years. Wayne thoroughly deserves his place in the history books of this great club and I am sure that he will go on to score many more goals. Well done Wayne, I am absolutely delighted for you, you have been a great servant to this club and long may it continue."

Rooney, now aged 31, equalled Sir Bobby's long-standing record of 249 United goals when he opened the scoring against Reading in the FA Cup third round earlier this month.

The stage seemed to have been set when Rooney started against Hull City in the EFL Cup and came on at half-time against Liverpool last weekend but, although it wasn't to be against our arch-rivals, he has now achieved the feat to write his name in the club's history for years to come.

Congratulations to Wayne from everyone at the club.

yes... but our finishing also need to be blamed... we have failed to convert so many chance just like it in the previous games.

Our attackers are just not clinical enough... either shot directly to keeper, defender or goal post...

agree with u about poor finishing..look at epl table..all top 5 teams all scored at least 10 goals more than united this season..

united league scorers so far this season
IBRAHIMOVIC - 14
POGBA - 4
MATA - 4
RASHFORD - 3
ROONEY - 2
MKHITARYAN - 2
MARTIAL - 2
SMALLING - 1
BLIND - 1

hope ibra can stay fit until end of season..he remind me of van persie that almost single handedly win united last epl title back in 2012

What did Rooney provide last night except the freekick and one decent cross? The volleyball header?

I think that he slowed down the counter attack too much. Mispass, miscontrol, losing possession.

I don't want him to go, he can be a good backup as a sub. That is when we are winning.

If im not wrong, this is the 1st goal that Rooney scored as a sub.

Sir Bobby Sir Alex compliment speak volume about him. The rest are sing song.

Not sure those that want to oust him, but i've been watching United when RTM still broadcast FA CUP & Premier League highlight. Gaya, Mutu, Keunggulan. Do you know what these means?

In premier league era, only the gang of 92' having a more prolific career than Rooney. Period.

Ronaldo been scoring 40/30 goals in his last 2 seasons in United. By then he already has 118 goals

If average 30 goals a season, Ronaldo would have broken the record in 4 and a half season more with United.

He definitely can be the best ever player for United, just that he chose and accomplished to become the best ever for Real Madrid.

Marcus Rashford will be handed another Manchester United pay-rise next season after winning over boss Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the summer.

"You see him now - he is calm and in control. That is the obvious observation I am making of the team now. The team is mirroring its manager.

QUOTE
"And did you see what he did? Ran to the halfway line. No celebration. Pointed to the ball as if to say 'get it, we are going to win this'. That is exactly the spirit Jose has created.

Soton vs Soton B, EFL rules too relax, shouldn't allow feeder clubs into the same competition. 😉

Soton Can't win Blame long ball, crowds, Ref, etc..

United blame post... Hahahhaa
