Usually and by generally, whenever your set-top-box is being replaced by any reason, either by upgrade or replaced due to faulty including the damage caused by lightning strike, or whatsoever, Astro don't care and they will restart your contract as follows:

HD set-top-box: 12 months
PVR set-top-box: 24 months

btw, Astro won't upgrade CN and Animax to HD right? Such an eyesore to watch both channels in subpar SD quality on Astro. They know parents will still subscribe to Kids Pack with or without HD channels so that parents can do chores when their children watch cartoon channels.
*
Base on my point of view, well.... As usual, Astro's main priority is money.

Will the Astro customers (parents) be interested to subscribe to HD service if Astro provide cartoon channels in HD? Do you think Astro will earn more profit/revenue/money by doing so?

Astro's main focus is to make customer tend to spend more money on Astro by introducing new and attractive channels (any kind of channel) and also, the recent channel upgrade of Lifetime Channel (709) from SD to HD is also one of the tactic made by Astro to somehow force the existing loyal Lifetime Channel viewers to subscribe to HD service, or watch it on Astro on the Go as an alternative.

Normal la... They want customers to know about this channel, hoping customers will pay more money to Astro by subscribing to the channel. This is very normal, and nothing to be surprised.

Previously I sent an email to Astro to complain to them about the stupid letterbox is being shown on quite an amount of SD channels. And this is the reply:
QUOTE
Dear Sir/ Madam,

We are writing based on latest feedback received from the respective team.

Thank you for sharing your valuable comments with us.

Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the array of events which had led you feeling discontented with our services.

After reviewing your feedback, please be informed that  we have opted the current down conversion format for MTV (and other channels namely HBO, E!, DIVA and AXN) in SD 4:3 letter box as we are also looking into consideration to the customer who is still using certain variance of legacy box type whereby they might be facing issue where the channel will be black on the screen. At this juncture,  MTV channel is transmitting as per current down conversion format in SD 4:3.

Nevertheless, we will further review down conversion format and option should we move to 16:9 format for MTV and the rest of the remaining channels. Again, we would like to thank you for your valuable feedback.

Should you have any other feedback, do e-mail us at wecare@astro.com.my

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding whilst dealing with us. We look forward to your continuous support.

Thank you.

Looks that the reason are all for the sake of legacy Astro set-top-boxes. Haiz... shakehead.gif

Erm, see who posted that information before you believe his words. This Low Li Hao user is well-known for making up own false statements about Astro that eventually did not happen in reality.

Don't believe me? Let's see on 25 Jan 2017, is there such thing Astro Quan Jia HD and AOD available on Njoi Prepaid or not.

Astro should force migration to full MPEG4 sd set top box.

In Indonesia most popular TV Operator migrate already. Also that some article you post that state astro stb use.
And more about 90% already use Byond stb. So better astro to move fully Byond stb and using MPEG4 compression for SD channel. biggrin.gif laugh.gif
*
There are no such thing as "MPEG4 SD set-top-box" as you mentioned for Astro. For Astro, if you want to watch SD channels in MPEG4, you need to use B.yond box cuz it has native support of MPEG4 video codec.

Actually, those legacy Astro set-top-box (manufactured by Nokia and Philips ones) are considered outdated, obsolete and old technology. It only supports DVB-S, MPEG2 video in SD resolution, and many more. Astro is already actually in transition to migrate to B.yond platform. However the migration/transition is done slowly. It is unsure why is it done slowly, and seems like Astro is taking their sweet time and for them it's like nothing to rush.

Once the migration is done, all Astro customers (including Njoi) will be using B.yond boxes only, and the ones that still using legacy set-top-boxes will be discontinued by Astro and viewers will not able to watch any channels. That time, you can expect SD channels to utilise MPEG4 video codec with AAC audio codec.

All Indonesia pay TV operators using MPEG4 codec.

Oh. You mean legacy one not support 16:9 video right?
I think by 2020 astro will migrate soon. Just hope doh.gif smile.gif

I don't really think is "cannot support" 16:9 la... I think is software bug/glitch that cause the issue, or it may be hardware related, not sure. But since Astro already discontinued support on legacy Astro set-top-boxes, so it is unlikely that they will provide firmware update to fix that issue. Since few years ago, whenever the customers using legacy Astro STB is faulty or having any issues, Astro will straight away replace to B.yond box, not take the set-top-box to repair or whatsoever. Astro has several models of legacy Astro set-top-boxes, it can be only certain models are affected only, examples like first generation ones, second generation ones, not sure manufactured by Nokia or Philips, I have no clue about it.

I replied to Astro and ask them which model of legacy Astro set-top-box(es) are affected by the black screen issue if the channel is 16:9. Hope I will get a reply soon.

I was using an even older STB and just upgraded to Byond a week ago with HD services. A new STB which is the smallest Astro STB I have seen was installed. Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch any HD channels since the installation.  The channel guide will flash on screen briefly and the TV will stop receiving any signal.

I have logged in service call and Astro has not responded.  Yesterday, I walked in to Astro's service centre in MV and was told that the new STB has software issues with smart TVs.  HD channels cannot be viewed with smart TVs and I was told to revert to an RCA connection!  Totally defeats the purpose of subscribing to HD services.

Does anyone else have this experience and do anyone have any solution?
*
That sounds ridiculous to me. I think the staff at Astro Centre Mid Valley don't know those technical stuff.
You need to know that not every words said by customer service can be trusted, and Astro is not an exception.
Sometimes the staff don't know, so they tend to assume something else rather than the truth.

Well, you need to know that there are people that, want to get a job/work as technical department but knowledge about technical stuff is low. Not everyone are interested in technology stuff, that's why.

Ignore whatever they told you about reverting to RCA connection.

Have you tried rebooting your B.yond box? Is your HDMI cable is directly connected from B.yond box to your TV? Tried other HDMI input source on your TV? Tried other HDMI cable?

If still persists, explain in detail on what you experience when you tune to HD channels (or only specific HD channels)?

1) What error message appears on your TV when you tune to HD channel? Is it mention something like "Copy Protection Failed" and "HDCP"?

2) Are you able to hear any sound when tune to HD channel?

3) Or, does it show the "Services Currently Not Available" message as if you can't watch Astro during heavy raining?

If you're not sure, you can attach a picture here if possible.

Seems like, that confirms asttro with outdated MPEG2 video and box without any useful features is perfect for CRT tvs and its not compatible with latest tvs! Maybe your latest tv had the latest HDMI output 2.0 and not 1.4,my 4K media player HDMI 2.0 will not play on all my Tvs which are still 1.4 hmm.gif
*
For your info, currently Astro is still using MPEG2 video codec for SD channels is all for the sake of the compatibility of legacy Astro set-top-boxes (non-B.yond boxes).

If Astro migrates to MPEG4 for SD channels, then it also means every Astro customers can only use B.yond box from then, and the legacy Astro set-top-boxes (well known for its blue colour UI) can no longer be used.

Everything needs to change.. Dish & cable included...

QUOTE(Fazrien97 @ Jan 25 2017, 11:07 PM)
actually black dish diameter is slightly bigger than white dish. so it can improve the signal reception. i think is more good to change to new dish.
*
Usually, Astro installer should change the satellite dish when they upgrade customer's set-top-box to B.yond. If they don't, then it is more likely that they are lazy to do so.

As for the RG6 cable (satellite cable), the installer usually won't change it unless if the condition of the cable is not so good or you request/tell them to do so. RG6 cable can last quite long and won't easily get damaged unless it is damaged by user.

Older Astro satellite dish (silver) are 55cm (capital letter "ASTRO" logo) and 60cm (lower case "astro" logo). Black B.yond dish is 65cm. Bigger satellite dish size, for sure the better reception it is.

QUOTE(WhiteBuffalo @ Jan 26 2017, 11:24 AM)
My HDMI is connected directly to my smart TV (Philips).  I have rebooted the B.yond box, tried other HDMI ports, different cables (including older HDMI cables that don’t support ARC – 1.1?) and the results are the same.

There is no sound or error message.  The channel guide will flash for a moment and the screen will go blank.  Then, my smart TV will display “No signal” but this is a message from the smart TV and not from the B.yond STB.  It is the same message if I switch to another HDMI port that has nothing connected to it, so it means the B.yond STB has suddenly stopped both audio and video feeds into the HDMI port after the brief flash of the channel guide.

Non-HD channels work perfectly normal.  This problem only occurs when I change to HD channels.  And when I change back to non-HD channels, the signal comes back and everything works as it should.

Reverting to RCA connection is absolutely rubbish because I will go back to SD.  If I use HDMI, I will get at least 720p.  However, out of curiosity, I tried running on RCA yesterday and changed to HD channels.  Surprises, surprises, I can watch HD channels as normal using RCA connections.  But at the SD resolutions…..

So, there may be some truth to what the staff at MV Astro Centre said - he/she did appear to have checked for their internal memos before telling me so.  He/She also said this is a known problem with the new generation of STBs and that Samsung smart TVs can resolve the conflict by disabling the MHL feature – unfortunately, I can’t find this on my Philips smart TV to disable (I did try various Smartlink settings)
*
Looks that you are experiencing HDCP issue. Perhaps can you request Astro to replace to a new B.yond HD box for you?
You file a case report to Astro regarding this issue, tell them you want a set-top-box replacement.

Better be quick. Because since you are already on your 12 months contract period, you should get a replacement as soon as possible because whenever your set-top-box is being replaced, your 12 months contract will be restart.

ahh what such brilliant idea...

didn't think about it..

nowadays b.yond STB is small only.. can dump into luggage bag  biggrin.gif

Astro smart card are paired with the B.yond box, and cannot be interchangeable except legacy Astro boxes.

Yes you can bring set-top-box back to your hometown and just Plug N Play. However you will face technical issues especially when you are using PVR box but your hometown's Astro cabling installation is HD box, meaning only 1 satellite cable is used. In this case, the cheapest temporary solution in this situation will be the same as high rise building that has only 1 Astro port on the wall socket, and that is using RG6 splitter to split into 2 cables to be connected to your PVR box. However you need to bear in mind that you will experience conflict when watching/changing/recording between SD/HD together (In technical: Changing channels between satellites of Measat 3/3b with Measat 3a). You will also need to look at your programme bookings (Series Link) as well, as your SD/HD programmes will be recorded in the background too.

Best solution? Make sure your hometown's Astro cabling installation has 2 satellite RG6 cables so that no issues when you bring your PVR box back.

Or, another possible issue is you are using HD box but your hometown is using PVR that uses SatCR instead of using the normal Universal LNB. That one no big deal. Go to Satellite Settings and change the Input Type from "Universal" to "SatCR". This also applies to both HD and PVR boxes. (Tip: Besides PVR box, HD box can also use SatCR)

There are quite an amount of channels that is exclusive by Astro, especially HBO, and many Fox Networks Group channels (previously known as Fox International Channels, or FIC)...

Exclusive DTH license for Astro will end on 28 Feb 2017. After that you can expect new DTH to be introduced. Is there any company that wants to offer new DTH services? As of now, I can say is no. But that doesn't means in future it won't have though.

And back to16:9 during commercial.

Because Astro Hua Hee Dai is still airing a few Hokkien dramas, which it starts airing since many years ago and until now the drama still haven't finish, that's why the drama is still in SD 4:3 quality.

This one is not Astro's fault la... Cuz they have to air finish the hundreds to thousands episodes of drama first. Of course, the newer ones are in HD quality.

Today I just by pass the road and saw the Astro Miri here.
I just walk in to pay the astro bill and saw the terminal machine all "temporary down".  shakehead.gif

Go to counter to make payment and the astro staff need to "verify" the IC owner 1st before make a payment.
Do you all come across for this to verify? unsure.gif

I just feel curious customers have money to pay your bill, but why need IC to verify before make payment?
Kinda stupid it's seems like only owner can arrange the payment.
*
Hmm... First time hear about requiring IC for verification to pay bills. Why not pay online or something? Or consider sign up for auto debit so that you don't have to hassle to pay Astro bills on time... It's very troublesome if you did not pay the bills by the due date, your Astro account is being suspended and might have to pay RM20 for reconnection fee.

You're already using hybrid mode cuz since u can switch from IP mode to Satellite.

But I don't understand how IP mode can made HD channels not watchable....

You go home>Settings>STB Diagnostics
Look the Operation mode, is it "DTH" or "IP"?
DTH means satellite

What error message appears on your screen? Is it Services currently not available (SCNA) or Network currently not available (NCNA) or Services currently not available (H-SCNA)? Check carefully the error code like SCNA, NCNA or H-SCNA when tuning to the channels that you can't watch.
