Hey guys, I'm not sure if there's a topic on this already, but I need to know a couple of things about my guitar...

1. Lets say I have a basic stop- tail guitar; And I want a Floyd Rose trem fitted into it. How do I go about it?

2. I hate my guitar finish. Do you guys know where I can get a paint job?

Hi there and welcome to the Musician's Thread!

First off, it would be a real hassle to get a Floyd Rose fitted into a guitar. You have to take it to a Luthier, get it routed and install it, and even that, your guitar might not take the tension. There are cases where the neck snaps off because it wasn't made for F.Rs.... And if you take it to Tham (our favorite Luthier here....) to get a Les Paul routed for a FR.... he'll chase you out!

Bottomline, if you want a FR guitar, just save up for a low or mid range FR guitar. Ibanez and LTD has a few nice ones out there in the market.

And as for your guitar finish, I'm not really sure where to send it, but I'm sure alot of our other forum members know. Just DON'T do it yourself!

if all you want is a floyd rose, then any will do. If your looking for a guitar that stays in tune well, then preferably get a gutiar with an original floyd rose(usually mid range guitars have it as well). One thing about floyd rose though. Changing strings can be a headache(and time consuming too), but for the stability thats the price you pay i guess.

if you want to finish your guitar...be willing to pay for it.
heres mine refinished.
from that yellow SG on the right, to the black one below.
done by edward of freeman guitars, but i have to touch it up abit.
not a prob since its a nitro finish, can just melt it in.

Really? How much did all of that cost?

Added on February 17, 2007, 7:38 pmOh yeah, and how much to fit the FR into the Gibson SG? Or was it like that when you bought it?

Pardon my ignorance. Haha.

I have not heard of any case where a guitar neck snaps when a FR trem is fitted. This is new to me.

It is my understanding that any electric guitar tuned to eg EADGBE, the tension applied to the neck is identical be it with a stop-tail (fixed bridge) or a floyd rose (floating). String tensions should be similar since the strings are tuned to the same EADGBE. (If string tension not the same, then it will be out of tune from EADGBE standard).

The time that the neck gets extra tension is when the tremolo is pulled and I believe electric guitar necks should be able to withstand the extra tension and should not snap.

RM650 for full neck/body job.
and it came standard with the FR, it is from the 80s afterall.

and this is the first time i'm hearing of necks snapping off when a FR is installed.

and banzai, you're forgetting about using different gauges.
of cos then string tension is different.
also for different manufacturers, string tension for the same gauge can sometimes be slightly different, depends on the material used etc.

ever tried cheap ass strings, then wonder why they play like crap?

yup, you are right that using different gauges I would expect different tension. I should have put an assumption for my above post.. ie using the same set of strings. tongue.gif

aaahh.. when you mention freeman guitar, I still longed for a guitar made by Edward Hiew. I'd say Malaysia's finest acoustic guitars made locally. drool.gif

another thing on string tension.
it also depends on how long the string is from tuning peg to tailpiece, not just scale length.
thats why some say reverse neck headstocks feel and sound different, ie. hendrix.
same reasoning applies to jazz guitars with those fancy tailpieces.

What usually causes the neck to snap? It's usually because of the truss rod not being able to stand the tension of the strings rite? If so, how does a FR affect that? Conclusion: If you have a sucky truss rod. Mati la.
