I hope you guys can remember my previous post about rough paint finish. So I experimented a bit with gloss black instead of flat black. I further thinned the paint and it's super watery now. But the finish is just slightly better.

Meaning, it's not as rough but still quite rough. For a gloss black, it's considered very rough.

So I'm thinking, what's the problem here? Took me a while to think about it and I remember touching the primed parts and the roughness is similar.

Correct me if I'm wrong but does primer with extra rough finish affect the outcome of the actual paint coat? Like if the primer is smoother, will my actual paint coat be smoother too?

I'm using the ACE gray primer spray can recommended by Avocado

How's the range of your spray? You might have sprayed a bit too close vs misting the surface.

If you are really aiming for a glossy black - you can either sand the primed surface with high grit sandpapers (1,500, 2000) or polish the black with a compound or something like that. If sanding the surface, it is recommended that the primer be given a chance to cure instead of just drying.
*
It was... not very far/close....about 1 samsung note of distance? (sorry, can't really think of another way of telling the distance)

It's possible that I may have sprayed a bit too close.. since I think it was windy that day......... bangwall.gif

I've since asked around and I was told to sand my primed surface as well. So since you recommended me to do this as well, is it safe to say that primer's surface finish affects the final paint coat? Like if the primer itself gives a very rough finish, the paint will came out very rough as well?

I asked because this is my 2nd kit painted kit and the first kit had similar finish albeit different color but same primer. Also, if the primer is rough, paint finish is rough, will the top coat be rough as well? As in, spotty finish...?

Yes the primer surface contribute majority of how good the finishing gloss or smooth result you will getting, having light sanded vs non sanded prime surface yield different result of smoothness and gloss.
*
I guess this will be a big lesson for me. I thought the primer has to be somewhat rough for the paint to adhere properly. Turns out it can be too rough. I'll try again tonight on some spoons, unsanded primed vs sanded primed vs unprimed.

I need to get this out of the way before I start my next project which will be a chrome/candy finish efreet. Can't have a single spot of roughness lol

Well - yes, the primer surface and gloss coat would impact on the paint surface.

The reason for sanding the surface is to actually "level"out the un-eveness caused by the primer. The sanding of the surface would give it a ""slick" look and a more uniform finish. Your picture shows that the primer is somehow not levelled or dispersed properly from the can - you need to shake the can more too.  I think some people would actually warm the can up in hot water before spraying it.
*
Thank you and everyone else for the tips. Yeah, some pieces are more..leveled while some are a lot more rough. I didn't think that it would affect the end finish much.

One more question though. I used the same primer for pretty much all painted pieces. I don't think I have this problem on gunmetal pieces. Gunmetal is thicker which masked the rough primed surface?

hmm felt like working for a candy color finish on my next kit. So I'm trying to find the most efficient way to achieve this. I bought a cheap pylox (nippon) chromo rattle can and tested on some spoons.

Above spoons are some with slightly different primer. But regardless of the primer, it seems... grainy. Without a mirror chrome finish, would I be able to achieve this kinda result?

Chrome needs to be polished for mirror effect. Straight spray may look smooth, but it is actually uneven.

To get the similar effect in the picture, you should use sparkling silver (higher flake content) and then paint clear red.
*
Do you have any recommended way to achieve the clear red result? Airbrush the sparkling silver > clear red? I'm thinking spray can the primer > silver and AB the clear red. But spray can silver/chrome seems grainy......unless..

Cheap but acceptable way is the sparkling silver + clear red + gloss. It won't be smooth to the touch but the effect will be similar.
*
Where do you get sparkling silver? From a spray can?

What primer do you guys use?

Advocado don't you have problems with gloss paint when you used ACE primer?

Bandai always makes kit that's anime accurate, hence the plain Jane design. It's also meant to give modellers space to customize their own kit.
*
That's reasonable. Is there any anime for Deep Striker? I actually assembled my first kit before seriously watching any Gundam series.

Hmm anyone here uses pledge floor care for gloss top coat? I think I oversprayed and it's spooling on some areas.

Anyone knows how I can get rid of it? Or spraying more thin layers on it would even things out?

Nice color. Rounded or curved kits should always go with metallic biggrin.gif

If I were you, I would have added some chrome, but that's just my preference.
*
I messed up on that. I bought silver instead of chrome. Those silver you see shoulda been chrome bangwall.gif

Can u use laquer thinner to thin acrylic paint?
*
Please no. Please try to do extensive research on paint types and how to thin them. Please don't cheap out getting hardware store thinner. I like to cheap out using alternatives but thinner is one thing that I'll always use hobby grade products.
