Arrghhh need to rectify that.
I used to use online metronome but I didnot give much attention on my timing. Now that I have just splashed RM120/- for a metronome, I need to take correcting my timing more seriously.
Metronome..., sense of rhythm

Just received my Korg TM40 from CK Music last week. Now Im practising using the metronome. I found that when I play some finger exercises slow, I tend to go out of beat. Implying my sense of rhythm sucks

At the moment Im setting my tempo to 50 beat per sec
Need to nail my timing inconsistency. Really suck when you think you are doing "OK" with simple things such as hammer and pull off. Now I notice that when going to different strings or moving to different frets, my timing tend to get out of beat. When playing at normal tempo, I didnot notice this. But when playing slow... thats when my poor timing shows. Well, need to start slowly. Edit: correction on above... 50 beat per sec at sixteeth note (semiquaver) beat This post has been edited by Banzai_san: Feb 12 2007, 11:22 AM |

QUOTE(Banzai_san @ Feb 12 2007, 11:12 AM) At the moment Im setting my tempo to 50 beat per sec My first metronome was some el-cheapo brand... I honestly believed that it was defective because I was always going out of time. Need to nail my timing inconsistency. I find that right-hand movement must be oh-so-precise and smooth in that range. I find that sometimes I tend to slow down and speed up to compensate... bad, bad... Try 16th note 5 string sweeps at 130 bpm... can die! |

practice will metronome really does help a lot, but due to my laziness, i stopped quite some time...but once in a blue moon, i'll use it as my warm up..
the thing is to start slow, then gradually increase the tempo...what i do is i start will 60bpm, slowly go up to 120bpm, then go back down to 60bpm...doing chromatics at 4/4 beat (simple and easy) what i found out is that, my left fingers tends to hammer the notes a fraction of a second faster than my picking fingers...so ended up with lots of dead note... |

I cant believe my playing sucks this bad Reality check here, I have to admit that my timing needs some polishing. its a normal problem to not be able to play well with a metronome for self thought guitarists like us. the best way in my opinion is to practice and record urself to a click track. its exactly the same as practicing with a metronome, only that u get to hear how u did later on. for me it has helped alot especially when i need to record things down. last time i used to need to take many takes just to record a solo down but now can do it pretty fast(like the lyn virtual jam that didnt take too much of my time).

i practice like how echo says.
But for the metronome, i do it abit different. I find that the more notes you play between clicks, the harder it gets. For example, doing sixteenths at 80 bpm is harder than doing eights at 160. So for me, i always start with eighths somewhere at 200 or more bpm, then halve it and try to do sixteenths (which is playing at the same speed, just with one less click). Then halve it again and try to do 32nds. And if i don't get it, then i double it back up again. In my case, slower doesn't mean easier. But maybe i'm just retarded. |

...hey, even Malmsteen says: "If it sounds good, it's good!"
...and I bet that most of his uber-l33t runs in his solos aren't exactly 100% on-time or accurate... just watch some of his "instructional" (i.e. show-off!) videos, and you'll be able to hear messy notes here and there... ...that being said, he's still Malmsteen... |

basically for me, have to hear the note/timing in head first, then makes it easier to pull off at slow tempos.
no point just banging away and hoping what you're playing hits the spot. also try to accent every first note of the beat so you know where you are. |
