I want to get a 2nd hand ford fiesta 2011 model as my 1st car for work. But most of my family members and friends saying that don't get ford due to several reasons. I don't really care much about the performance, the house power, the torque moment, the gear transmission, etc. (I actually do concern about those things just they are not my main concerns.) And resale value is not my concern because i gonna keep it for some years. My main concerns about getting a 2nd hand ford fiesta 2011 are:

1. if any thing happen to the car, is the replacement parts very expensive and very hard to find in Malaysia (specifically in Penang)
2. is the maintenance fee (minor and major) very expensive compare to Honda and Toyota (not SC but those car service shops outside)

Yes, spare parts are more expensive than Jap cars and you may have to wait for parts. Yes, cost of maintenance will be more. If those two are your main concerns why get a Ford Fiesta? Just get a Honda or Toyota and be done with it.

Both your points are valid. If you live in Klang Valley there are a few Ford specialist workshops, but in Penang it would be a bit hard and your only option is Ford Service Center.

That said, there are not many things that require a specialist, most normal maintenance items such as oil change and belt change can be done in any workshop. major items like clutch replacement yes you will need to bring it to Ford or a specialist shop as they require special tools.

Spare parts prices are mostly abang adik with jap makes, but unlike jap makes it is hard to find third party/replica parts for Ford. So while you can find a RM300 third party driveshaft for Vios as oppsed to Toyota ori RM3000, it will be hard to find such alternatives for Ford.

Honestly, if you are just looking for cheap transportation, you can hardly beat local makes.

quite hardy car, spare parts may be expansive, but it is tough.

not even sure what you are looking for.... why did you even consider the fiesta in the 1st place? style?
assuming a less than 5 yo car with a budget around 40k, no need for space, you may consider:

+swift?
dont really like this thing, not exactly loaded with goodies, but kind of meets the (assumed) bill
does look pretty tho

+mazda 2
older ones were nothing special if you ask me...
also looks somewhat pretty and interior is quite nice

+rio (a tad over 40k)
now this comes with lots of toys though i still feel that its lacking in the engine department.
parts not the cheapest either but, somewhat decent (do not know if it will be an issue finding sc's in pg)

Do NOT in any case consider: (you had the guts to think about the fiesta, these possibly crossed your mind...

Why not get a new car? New car = less hassle, less problem, new parts.. Saga or Bezza would be your choice i guess.
Budget have around 40k and must < 5 years old, try to look for Kia Picanto then, 35k to 40k , 2 to 3 years old, still under 5 years warranty.

The transmission is not good in this car. Good for 0-60, horrible for maintenance.

As others have said, all your parts will be original Ford parts, whereas with Japanese and local cars you can get OEM and 3rd party parts. If you're only interested in original parts then prices are similar but availability is limited for Ford, meaning higher price eventually.

Pug 308T is certainly no-no but Polo may be OK if TS is prepared to fork out a little higher maintenance than a typical Jap but not a lot of difference. A 5 year old Polo 1.2 TSI will be just about TS's budget.

i think the polo has the DQ200 right?? if it has that dryclutch, best not touch it.... amount of $ potentially going into that would be very similar to the fiesta

No it comes with the Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. Seldom hears any complaints about Polo.

if i remember correctly, the aisin only came with the with the simple old school boring 1.6.... not the fancier models. The fancier fi motors got the dsg of death~

I own a fofi 2011 model, it's like this, if there is no problem there will be no problem untill the car is completely dead.

A few question to ask the previous owner,
a. Did he receive an FOC extended warranty?, if yes, ask for the letter from SDAC as a proof
b. HOw often he drive outstation (or is it a second car?), Ford is a strange car, the more it is driven, the less problem it is, especially on the transmission, my car i notice that if I tekan all the time, it has no problem, but if I drive like my grand ma, all sorts of problem comes out (contrary to Jap cars)
c. He use ron 97 or ron 95?, if during the first 2 years it is driven with ron 97, the engine will be very smooth, if not, completely pointless (this engine is a high compression engine that can truly benefit from high ron, low ron can mess up this engine)

Your concern,
b. Parts problem, quite unlikely, because the most possible damage will on the transmission (they call it PCM and TCM), if item "a" above is available, then no issues, if not, when it fails, it will cost 10k + to fix
c. Other parts, brake, spark plug, timing belt and etc (the common ones) are very normal, just like any other car
d. Expensive?, you can ask an infamous ford workshop aka "Bug" (you can google him out)


Common headache with this car
a. Gearbox and transmission (but hey, even VW high end model also have same complain on their DSG)
b. Engine vibration during jam (that's the characteristic - changing from gear 2 to 3 is a bit clumbsy, but if that happens during slope climb, then that is the real damage)

Just avoid Ford Fiesta unless you are a road warrior with a high tolerance for pain and a lot of time to take to the workshop. It's not as if there are no other cars for your money and you need to buy a possibly problematic car and hope for the best.
