So detailed thread. Learn a lot.

So basically for my house where I want 2 outdoor camera front, 1 or maybe 2 camera rear, 1 indoor camera. It would be best to get a network recorder with PoE support, so I just need to run 1 cable only instead of COAX+POWER.

Would something like that be sufficient? I am leaning towards Dahua for their camera's low light performance.

I'll be doing plaster ceiling, so I figure a lot of the cables can be concealed.

POE is a good choice.
Anyhow, which camera model you are eyeing?

Considering the Dahua starlight 2MP turret for the front facing gate. But then it is very costly, maybe a more cost effective approach is to install motion detection flood lights, that way when the intruder comes in, the lights will activate and an average cam will be able to record it down.

As for the rear, need something that has good tripwire detection, that way even in the day i would know if someone climb in the rear of my house...

Feel free to give advice..this is just my thinking so far...

First floor house cam, is to look the front surrounding of the house
Ground floor cam is to aim at the gate/immediate front of the house
Rear of the house is to setup tripwire to be alerted in case people climb in. Thinking can put a motion detection flood light as well.

indoor, at the stairwell area upstairs, also for motion detection purpose alert. maybe helpful have speaker on the camera, then can alert the intruder outside my bedroom door to ask him run away, cops coming (haha watch too much movies)

Are u going to lay the cable urself?
If yes, network cable is easier for u. Only IP System cost higher.

Else, u can ask wireman to lay the coax+power for u, then u can go for Dahua HDCVI or HIKVISION HDTVI, both system got LowLight version. System a lot cheaper than IP.

No I am not going to DIY, as part of my renovation gonna get someone professional to install it.

Correct me if I’m wrong but there’s no reason to choose HDCVI systems over IP for a new install, other than cost, as it seems IP is the future and HDCVI is a format meant to allow existing analog systems to be “updated” without recalling.

What’s the price difference like between HDCVI vs IP? 1.5x? 2x?

Good read. IP seems to be the way to go.
