My wife is in her early 40s and got pregnant recently (first child) . Due to the age factor, few gynaes suggested NICC test to detect Down Syndrome.. claiming 99% accuracy..I didn't like the idea but my wife wanted it..so we paid RM2500 at UMSC and waiting for 2 weeks..its gona be a nerve wrecking 2 weeks for me especially after reading this..

Damn, even if the results is positive, how should I decide? There is a possibility that the baby could be normal..What if we made the wrong decision?

Biggest mistake was to do that bloody test.. bangwall.gif

p:s: Did not show my wife the article and don't intend to..

Any experience anyone?

hmmm.
very early in gestation.

anyway, the test you mentioned is a SCREENING test. not a DIAGNOSTIC test.

it cannot be used to confirm a disease , only suspect a disease. i am sure you know this already.

regardless of the test positive or not, there should be a date for DETAILED scan at around 18-20 week gestation to check for fetal abnormalities.
if normal, most likely a normal baby. if abnormal, need to discuss with obstetrician for further plan of management, depending on the scan finding.

my honest opinion.........it is a useless test. won't change any management at all. cost too damn high too.

11 weeks is the earliest that this test can be taken. so that if parents choose termination, its still within 1st trimester.
its safer than amniocentesis i.e. just draw blood with zero possibilities of causing miscarriage unlike amnio.
the main thing tested by NICC is Down Syndrome. but it also checks for other chromosome abnormalities.
also, the gender will be revealed in the test. its 99% accurate.

I think the cost is cheaper now as they have the test done locally. Can anyone pls advise if you have done it recently.

sorry to hear that.

after your experience of getting the nicc test the first time, will you do it again?

about the miscarriage, i know it must be sad for you and your partner.
but try to move on ya. stress is not good if you are trying to conceive another baby.

usually, if its an unexpected miscarriage, it means that the genes / DNA doesnt match.
layman terms, the chromosomes from you plus your wife, when mixed, wont turn out well, cacat or something, then thats why miscarriage.
the recipe is not good.
u must remember, its 23 chromosomes from u, and 23 from ur partner. it can be millions of different variations of recipes.

the right one will come along.be patient

Thanks for the kind words..we have moved on Quebix smile.gif first month there were many questions running in our head..i was confident because she had passed the NICC and the 3 months period (stability period)..somehow things didnt turn out the way it was suppose to..i finally accepted we were not destined to have that baby..I even found out some miscarried in the 7th month sad.gif
i dont think it was the chromosomes because NICC tested all that and it was suppose to be 99% accurate..

We are hoping to get by next year..if no, no problem..dont want to build unnecessary pressure on her as shes in her early 40s already..

Well, the article u shared did shed some light on how true the 99percent accuracy.

Its more to a marketing gimmick i guess.

Anyway, all da best! Use a period tracker to calculate fertile windows. U need to take care of ur swimmers as well. If u need further info on fertility windows, how to conceive etc, u can always pm me

Sorry to bump old thread. My wife did nicc 2 week ago....and doctor called us to see her tomroow due to some concern.

My head is not at the right place. We suffered miscarriage 2 year ago and did an IVF. Before the egg could be inserted back, she was pregnant...a miracle baby I'd say and now my head is spinning out of control. I have to be strong for my wife but what the doctor mentioned...that there is some concern to discuss tomorow....

It's gonna be a long night

Thanks. We met with the doctor and the test showed baby has a missing cromosom aka xo aka turner syndrome.

Our hearts are shattered. We met with a mfm specialist and did a scan and indeed baby neck is swollen and the scan confirmed the result.

We had a miscarriage 2 year ago. Covid came..decided to put things on hold until we fully vaccinated and now after trying, we find out and we have to decide on the termination of the baby.

We are just so dejected at this point. The same mood and feeling again from our misscariage. Doctor shared this happens and u can't pin point but why must it happen to us ! Absolutely dejected !
