Hi Mr farmer. Not a good idea for a visit. We are still building and renovating a lot and the place is in a mess. Maybe in a few months should be alright. Our place is such a mess now, not worth a visit yet.

Can i ask? What type of farm is ur fren intending to do? Concrete, poly tanks or earthen ponds?
If ur fren really wants a visit to a farm, i know of a farm in rawang doing tilapia which is one of the biggest players, i think. And they are also distributors for CP(starfeed). I think that is a better choice for a visit for ur fren. Our system also isnt that good yet and needs a lot of improvement. Maybe i can post up some pictures later so your fren can have an idea of how it looks like?

I am interested in getting into aquaculture in Rawang as well.

Hi all,
i'm keen to start a small scale aquaculture poc, just wondering if i'm required a licence for it.

I'm planning to build a RAS system for jade perch with two 5000 liter tank. I would like to know the max stocking density which I could stock without causing significant stunt issue.

Not much info on google, most source say stocking density about max 40pcs per meter cube based on aquaphonics guys. Appriciate If anyone here could share some thought on this.

I'm planning to stock 500 per tank or 100 fish per meter cube.Turn over rate will be 3x or 15000L per hour per tank. Is it sufficient ?
*
Where you get the quotation of the RAS system? How big it will be for your 5000 litre water tank? For perch, as far as I read shows 40-50kg per cubic metre. With the perch can grows up to 800g (7 months), you can raise up to 300 fish at one time.

Is it? From what I gathered. Hydroponics system is very affordable to DIY hmm.gif
*
Yes. It is easy to DIY. However, from my humble knowledge of nothing, I am afraid of the material. Many like to use PVC etc for Hydroponic/Aquaponic. I do not know the long term effect of the material which will absorb by plants which might be toxic for human. Meanwhile, the material use specially for hydroponic are quite expensive compares to you buy the pipes etc.

QUOTE(Kg Teratai @ Feb 6 2018, 05:19 PM)
I am planning to replant my 5 acres oil palm to durian. While waiting for the durian tree to grow. I also plan to have the short term chops

Less than 1 year
1. Banana.
2. Papaya.

3-4 years
1. Limau
2. Ciku

May I know if there is any others short term chops that is available?

The main concern is no water run thru my farm.
*
Two problem I can see:
1) Lack of nutrients in the soil. I believe you should heal the land first. After cut the oil palm, the leaves can be buried underneath sparingly. It takes lot of efforts and time. Once I come across an organic farmer who revitalise the land of oil palm, took him nearly 3 to 4 years to grow banana. The trees grow, but skinny and small. However, if you do not care about the natural nutrients, then you may use chemical fertilizers.
2) Water is your biggest enemy here. Any chances dig a well or pond? Fruits require lots of water during flowering and fruits.

1. I will use mix organic and chemical fertilizers. The farm have been left unattended for quite a long time already. It will definitely have to invest in the fertilizers. The oil palm tree will be cut down and put at the side of the farm. The oil palm root will be taken out from the land also.

2. Water. Yes. this is a my big concern. Initially I am thinking of underground water, but I drop the idea because of future. This land used to plan durian tree before oil palm. I believe durian can survive unless it is a long dry session. It is the short term fruit tree. I need to find those short term fruit tree that do not require high volume of water.

Currently, I am still checking if there is water supply from Syabas. It used to have a village near by.
*
Ok. Water can take from SAJ (Water Agency for Johor). Can apply and pay small amount of fees. If too far, they may charge you more. I forgot, but did apply for TNB and water at Pahang last year. They come in few weeks time to install since it is about 1km from nearby main pipe. The guy told me if they need to install from far away, then it takes months for their budget approval.

QUOTE(Kg Teratai @ Feb 7 2018, 10:01 AM)
It is in Johor.

The reason I want to choose banana is as a short term plan and it can cover for durian tree from the hot sun. As long there is little bit of return, It will be good.

the 3-5 years fruit will be either pomelo, limau or ciku. I have not make the choice yet.
*
Banana is ok and quick, but another challenge is the pest and fungus. One farmer advice me to take directly from MARDI centre at Klang, more resistant and can harvest additional 2 to 3 times before effect of the resistant wears off. Then you need to buy again from them. I think the cost is about RM 2 for one baby tree, takes about 7 to 1 year to have first fruit. You need to keep the first sprout, and cut the remaining sprouts. That way, you can have another harvest 1 year 5/6 months from the day you plant. Do drip system and switch on daily for 2 hours (morning and evening).

~From MARDI officer at Serdang told me this~

If you are doing personally (not company), you can request for support from nearby Pejabat Pertanian - they can support banana trees for up to 2 acres. Join local association for additional fund from government.

Hi all sifus,

I'm a research student who is trying to venture into testing my treatment in tilapia model. Does anyone know the best farm where can I purchase tilapia fingerlings (~3 inches) for about 200 in quantity? And also, what's the expected/estimated selling price?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I would definitely appreciate any help/insight.

Thanks. =)

hi guys, i'm a student, and i'm sitting on a 5 acres of land in lanchang, pahang that my mum had no use for. she gave me permission to do away with it, and i thought why not farming / fishing right?

thing is, i have no idea where to start. i was thinking on going to local seminar and workshop by the agriculture ministry just so that i can get a gist of what i can and should do with the land in the future. but any more input / ideas / direction would be much appreciated. thanks
*
first thing first - do you have people to run it?

fish farming is good idea. What fish you want to get?

If u know nothing, u get the right move joining workshop from ministry. Im highlighting Ministry because they are the one teach real thing. Many try to cheat especially a real case happened from ppl of Lyn.

Assume u get the training done, 5 acres u need minimum cash 60-80k for land preparation, basic irrigation equipment, fertilisers and basic equipments. Worker excluded; are u full time taking care of it? Pls always rmb, workers are not dependable unless u lucky enough to get a good one.

After knowledge, capital prepared, what u want to plant? Short, medium, long term crop? For size of land u having, palm oil is not recommended because too small to get enough return. Durian, no, unless u do this agri on part time basis apart from fixed salary.

yea, I agree with this. Really important. +1000. My agro startup failed because of this.

Thanks.

Wonder anyone else into freshwater aquaculture?  Or looking to get into it?

Previously look into it, but do not have budget and location wise a bit far from KL. so, did not materialise.

No experience before but can give you suggestion

1) Tilapia and Keli is quite good in surviving in low oxygen
2) Total Amount of Fish in a tank depends on the total surface area (oxygen exchange purposes) unless oxygen pump in used.
3) If pump in oxygen, try adopt some technology like alert to your smart phone IF pump breaks down or electricity stop. All this will cause your fish to die within hours if not handle properly, or you got back up in water pump and generator

Go Jabatan Pertanian, as someone who "tried" to enter the field before, most farmers are kedekut ilmu and refused to share their knowledge and stingy, yes, my is failing experience not in aquaculture, but breeding chickens. my best advise is still go to Jabatan Pertanian and ask
