Hi All sifu,

My wife is looking for a Piano for her (to release stress from work) and both my children (new learner).

We are currently scouting for Piano, and we had seen few, both recon as well as new Pianos. We basically fine with Kawai or Yamaha.

Some of those we seen as follows:

1) Recond Kawai BL-51 - RM 9,000 net
2) Recond Kawai BL-71 - RM 14,000 net
3) New Yamaha U1 (Japan) - approx. RM 35,000. exc GST
4) New Yamaha U1 (Indonesia) - approx. RM 22,000. exc GST
5) New Kawai K15E - RM14,800, exc GST
6) New Kawai K300 - RM24,500, exc GST

After talking to numerous salesman, there are pro and cons of recond units. We are also quite confuse and we may most likely go for new unit.

In this respect, any sifu can advise where can we go to look for good price of new Kawai unit? notworthy.gif

Thanks ya.......

Do more readings on Internet. There are more than 300 brand in the world, do not just fix your eye on these two. You can skip Chinese/ Korean brand for that matter.

Though I may say I do not recommend expensive piano for new learners, regardless adult or children, however if they are really really interested then buy an expensive one - they may become musician one day. A good tool is a necessity for one to become expert. Bear in mind that if they are going beyond grade 8, you may have to invest a grand piano instead.

Btw, have they started their lesson already?

This wonderful forum may be able to assist you.

Thanks all, really appreciate that. smile.gif

Yes, have been reading anger browsing internet, there are really lots of brand out there, same when visited those shops.

Of course, Yamaha and Kawai are the most common and also not bad too. Not sure both my boys will like it but will let them try first.

Haha... Grand piano? No space in my house, I am not in bungalow smile.gif well! It's a good wish list though.

For now, my wife tempting for the new Kawai K300, not sure where can get better price than this

Since your budget already stretching to 24k, why not get a recond baby grand?

If not I'll get an upright grand (131cm) model instead.

I bought a recond Kawai BL-61 at 9k. Worth every penny compared to the new pianos I tested. Delicious sounding and looks incredibly new.

Don't like yamaha sound, too bright for my liking.

I am not a piano expert.... but I have heard my friend played Kawai and Yamaha many times ... and somehow most of the ones that sounded good to me are the Kawai's. Yes a few Yamaha's sounded good too, but more often than not...most KAwai's sounded better overall.

r u only limited to only these two brands in your market? if not, there are many brands in the market and each brand has a different sound and feel. similar, we have our own personal preferences. yamaha and kawai are long established brands 'from japan', but they are not the only brands in the world. i am not sure where you live, i would suggest that you visit more showroom and try out more piano. today, the biggest player in the piano market is china. they are not only the biggest consumer but also the biggest producer, producing 2/3 of new pianos, this include japanese marques. same time, affordable and competitive. chinese pianos have always been perceived as 'poor quality', in which i totally agree. but things have been changing dramatically since 1990s when they open up the market for possible J.V., foreign partners and etc. the condition now in china is growing fast as the chinese becoming to accustomed to western ways of doing business and focused on quality control.

u can also check our this link as "basic piano 101" shopping, www.pianobuyer.com ..

hv fun shopping....

I have been hunting piano for months for my children too. I don't know how to play piano, and have no knowledge on piano as well. And I would like to thanks jhp and ml888 for their wonderful explanation and advice on piano. Based on their guidance, i'm able to find my "preferred sound" piano.

Beside Yamaha and Kawai, you can check out these piano brand too, e.g. H.Wagner(Imperial) / Weinbach(By Petrof) / Irmler(By Bluthner) / Challen, it's in the price range of 20K+ for new paino. All these new pianos sound nicer and richer to me and the key action is smooth, as compare to some older used piano.

Hi mybizilife, many thanks for the sharing and appreciate that. Yes, indeed, jhp and ml888 advised very well!! rclxms.gif Which piano you eventually settled with?

My wife eventually settled for Kawai which the sound preference she likes it (don't ask me why, I know nothing but paying blink.gif ). We didn't go to the extend of H.Wagner(Imperial) / Weinbach(By Petrof) / Irmler(By Bluthner) / Challen as recommended, new for only 20k+? Wow!! good price I guess.
