There's a research on it for heavy trucks. In traction control, the brakes are applied automatically and adequately to prevent wheelspin. Mercedes Benz S-Class has an Automated Braking System. The car brakes by itself. Yes.

I take it that a "better pick up" car for daily usage are those with good torque @ lower RPM, right?

Torque is basically the twisting motion that's happening to the cranshaft.
To put it a little simpler: Imagine if you want to loosen a nut, you need a spanner right? Okay when you are loosening the nut with the spanner, what motion do you use? What do you do with your hand when handling the spanner? You make a circular motion with the spanner by pushing/pulling the other end of the spanner right? So basically you applied torque to the nut. For engines, just replace the spanner with a crankshaft and your hand with the a piston. To calculate torque, the formula is: force x distance(from the point where the force is applied to the centre of the axis of the crank, sorry if explanation is a bit blur. The longer the crank, the more torque you produce. Also the more force you apply, the more torque as well. This post has been edited by tunertoobe: Jan 24 2007, 10:18 PM |

in short, torque is the twisting force produce by the engine. A car engine can spin at different speed, thus RPM, but they might have different force at different speed.
Diesel engine has good torque at low RPM. Meaning they have good standstill acceleration, and they have the force to pull heavy loads. Petrol car usually have good torque at high RPM, thus can go higher max speed. As for horsepower, it is just a number calculated from torque. it is basically calculated based on torque multiply by RPM multiply by 1/5252. So it means that if you car engine can give out high torque at high RPM, then your car engine has high horsepower. |
