Hi guys, just surveying for new tires for my MyVi 1.3 X when it reaches 70K on the odo. Still using the factory Bridgestone Ecopia 175/65R14 tires.

Heard that Michelin XM2+ is good but would like to hear other opinions on brands and tire sizes as well smile.gif Thanks
*
Try Dunlop Sport J5 or Yokohama Blue Earth.
XM2+ is good but overpriced.

QUOTE(zeng @ Sep 30 2021, 07:27 PM)
I too never do the often-pronounced practice of tyre rotations since installation of my respective tyres .....
meaning the 4 tyres on my Avanza are today still in their original location since installation.

Besides, my previous set of 105-110k km XM2 (Front axle) had a residual tread depth of about 2 mm, well higher than the factory recommended criteria of replacement upon reaching tyre wear indicator at 1.6 mm depth.

Your 40k replacement of Goodyear was likely at a tread depth well very much higher than 1.6 mm tire wear indicator recommended of factory, just my speculation.

I think majority of car owners on this board and general public are brain-washed to have their tyres replaced at say, 3-4 mm of residual tyre tread depth for whatever insurance/feel shiok reasons which imo is contrary to recommendations of ALL tyre manufacturers and hence I humbly consider the actual practice a wasteful consideration.

[attachmentid=10993879]

Tyre manufacturers should be smarter right?
*
Duration depends on tire type, car type, driving style. Rotation also depends on car type and driving style. Yours is Avanza with rwd so usually the tire wear is more balanced then FWD. But FWD usually will chew up fronts up to 50% faster, so better do rotation for FWD cars.

Cannot say all will last over 40k km. But yes I also agree that you can still use until 1.6mm tread depth or even less as long as you're mindful when the roads are wet and adjust your driving accordingly with higher alert for quick reactions just in case the car hydroplanes.

For 195/50 R15, between XM2+ or PS3 (since PS4 don't have 15) which one to go? CC6 no good now?

Current tire Kruizer at 20k usage, usage okey for me but want more quiet.
*
CC6 is crap tires. Between XM2+ and PS3, surely get PS3 cuz XM2+ price is close to PS3 yet it's lower category tire than PS3. IMHO XM2+ is overpriced and not worth it. Aside from PS3, in this size I'd highly recommend these 2:
1. Maxxis Victra I-Pro, only around rm140-150/pc, the best value for money now!
2. Bridgestone Potenza RE004, around rm180/pc, probably better in the dry than the Maxxis or even PS3!

I think Dunlop J5 already replace by J6, ask for the J6 model.
Anyway i am using Yokohama BlueEarth ES32 for my Kelisa, it is also a good choice for daily comfort drive.
Yokohama might be pricier compare to Dunlop due to imported.
*
Ah ya should be J6 now but J5 can still be had probably a bit cheaper still.

hi any sifu tried both PS4 and hankook s1 evo3 before?
is there significant diff that can tell from this 2 tyre?

coming from 225/40/18 ps4.. thinking to switch to cheaper tyre, economy no good..
*
Can read this for reference, got both tires in comparison tests. I'd say go ahead try the S1E3, you won't go wrong with it.

Sifus any recommendations for 235/40/18?
Nowadays too many brands and even famous brands have local manufacturing so not sure which is good

Hankook S1 Evo 3, best value for money now and well proven as it recently won 2021 Auto Express UK comparison tests.

Posted this on Mazda3 thread but thought here may have other feedback...

Time to change my tyre after almost 3 years. Currently the stock Toyo clocked about 45000km and starts giving some sound in the carpark when turning, probably an early indicator.

Considering Primacy 4 or Pilot Sport 4.. I can see there's a lot of comparison but still can't visualise if Primacy is enough for me. Was thinking of PS4 all the while (safe bet) but if Primacy is enough for my driving style, may wanna try the touring option for comfort (yes, top 2 reasons are wanna try out how big is the diff of comfort and noise reduce while not severely sacrificing high speed handling).

My usual style is....
+ 130 to 150 on NKVE, Elite or MEX straight road (dry with little traffic)
+ 110 to 120+ on the highways above (wet)
+ Slightly reduce speed on highway cornering (more during wet. There's once I unintentionally went into those on 130 during rain, skid for awhile. No more 130 corner during wet from then)
+ 70+ during highway exit corners
+ No fast cut into Hairpins, very careful on hills
+ Max hit 170km, only once in my life. A few 160s, but usually stays below 155

Not sure if Primacy can handle the above? Or need Pilot Sport 4? Toyo Proxes T1 Sport and PS4 are both AA traction while Primacy is only A....quite worry if it's severely affecting my confidence especially exceeding 130km...

Not to say can't survive with reduced handling as I had been on Myvi with XM2 at 130 too, but confident level is extremely shaky so I don't reach above 140 that time. Only stays around 120 to 130. So just try to stay at 130 to 150 with confidence, like the Toyo have given me (very good wheels on handling despite noisy and bumpy)

Appreciate fellow forumers advises, thx!

P/s: btw is the above consider "spirited driving"?
*
Get the PS4, more suitable for your driving cuz you seem to like driving a bit faster than average especially in the wet. That traction rating is for wet traction btw.

Hi guys,

I'm currently using 215/45/R17, 17x7.5jj ET40.

Would like to upgrade to 18".
Any recommendation for 18x8J ET40, tire size and brand/model?
*
Don't, cuz even on your 17 is already pretty thin profile at only 9.7cm sidewall height. Upsizing to 18 will require you to use even thinner profile of 215/40/18 with only 8.6cm sidewall height which is waffer thin! You will feel every nook and cranny, bumps and cracks on the road, so will be harsh and uncomfortable. Plus that size is also not that common so will not be as widely available selection. You can opt for slightly thicker 225/40/18 which is common size but it's quite a bit bigger rolling diameter than your 17' (by about 1.3cm) which will make your acceleration feels heavier, plus the sidewall is still under 9cm.

So in summary, just stay 17.

Oh, does it mean that on dry, both PS4 and Primacy perform about the same? Usually during Wet I will be extremely cautious.

No, PS4 is also superior in the dry.

If you're around Shah Alam or Klang, can go to FW Pro Services in Taipan, Setia Alam. Otherwise search in FB or Mudah.

Any opinion on xm2+ vs primacy 4st vs pilot sport 3 for honda city (15').

Driving style (on myvi 1st gen 14'):
- 130-170 on North south (100-120km/h on rain, don't remember)
- 100-140km/h on major roads/city highways when possible
- 60-80km/h on non major roads
- usually around 50-60km/h cornering. anything above 60 usually tyre start squeaking
- slightly lower speed 10-20km/h on wet condition.
- sometimes do hit potholes at speed (so tyre better not too fragile)
- faster than avg person on bumps.
- old tyres are like silverstones or other budget tyres. even drove with 4 different brand and 'flower' 3-6yo (well just realized)

preference:
safety/durability (in terms of fragility) > comfort/noise > durability (mileage).

Price is hard to judge. If xm2+ is sufficient of course best option since almost x2 mileage compare to primacy and ps.
Safe as in good enough wet grip but not too fragile kena non serious pothole then break. so far (10y+) driving no break tyre due to pothole (touchwood). Bumpy like tyre hardened is no fun. Noise? even budget tyre also seldom realized much noise (maybe too much road noise till not realized). best to last atleast 40kkm (all three of tyre above should pass this already).
I heard michelin tyre easy break/fragile is it true? Wanna give a try on these branded stuff as past experience only on (goodyear/silverstone/dunlop/toyo) budget tyres.
*
You drive rather fast so performance is your priority, not durability, then get PS3, end of story.

QUOTE(Aeon_Clock @ Jan 16 2022, 09:24 PM)
looking for advice for new tyres for Honda Civic X. My driving style is economical on the highway but I do corner VERY hard unlike most people. Current tyre is Continental MC5...very happy with this because its comfortable over uneven road/bumps and dry grip is sufficient but wet grip leaves much to be desired (especially in carparks).

Looking at a few options and all feedbacks are appreciated.
- Another Continental MC5 (safest bet...maybe)
- Michelin XM2+ (somewhat recommended? But I heard it cracks badly after a few years)
- Yokohama BlueEarth ES32 (I think Yokohama is a good brand? Will this crack as badly too?)
- Bridgestone Ecopia EP300 (recommended by workshop)

PS4 is not an option for me because it pretty much dies of in 2-3 years? I'm not interested in wasting money in something that lasts so short  biggrin.gif  laugh.gif
*
Cornering hard but no budget for PS4? Then none of your choices above! Get at least Maxxis I-Pro for the cheapest, Conti MC6, Goodyear F1 Sport, Potenza Re004, Hankook S1 Evo 3, or Falken FK510. Best choice should be S1 Evo 3.

Yeah, not only no budget, this tyre doesn't last...so its not one of my preference. I made MC5 last 60k with hard cornering...imagine that.
But I stick it within the limit on the highways.
I am looking for MC6 and Potenza RE004 actually...but these models are quite difficult to find somehow.
Recently I visited a workshop and found Toyo Proxes CR1 and Michelin Primacy 4. I think Primacy 4 is quite a good option? Toyo apparently is on par and cheaper...
*
What size do you actually need? Primacy 4 and CR1 are mid category touring tires like MC5 which are 1 category lower than those UHP tires that I mentioned. If you are short on budget, the Maxxis I-Pro is actually very cheap, even cheaper than that Toyo CR1. RE004 price range is also pretty cheap now, probably similar to Primacy 4 or CR1.

my tyre size is 215/55/16. Tried looking for MC6 but can't find it anywhere.

Actually regarding those 3 tyres...you're very off on the price there. RE004 tyre is the most expensive of all for some reason...100 bucks a pop more than Primacy 4. And the CR1 is almost 100 bucks a pop less than Primacy 4. doh.gif at least for my tyre size.
*
What are the prices you got for re004? A quick check in mudah for your size shows it's slightly cheaper than Primacy 4. I still highly recommend getting Re004 instead of Primacy 4 or CR1.

Your re004 price is too high, should be under rm400, see below

Oh thanks. But this tyre is year 2020...might be very old stock. I'll check around more but so far two shops quoted me 550 & 545 each...

If you have a choice of Primacy 4 and Potenza RE004....which would be your choice?
*
2020 is still perfectly fine, even 2019! Too many people misunderstood that buying tires must be the newest one but actually not correct. FYI I bought a 2019 tires back in 2021 and only this new year installed them, still works perfectly as expected just as any newer year tires, yet I got a 15-20% discount on them! We just gotta be smart customers.

For me no brainer I go for RE004 cuz performance and grip are my first priority above comfort and longevity.

wait, Michelin would be longer lasting? I've had Bridgestone many years ago and it was the longest lasting of all the tyres I've tried. Performance a no brainer there  biggrin.gif
*
Not all BS are the same and not all Michelin are the same either! Primacy 4 has Tread Wear rating of 340 while RE004 only 220 so huge difference there. Primacy model is designed as mid range touring tire that focus more on comfort and durability while Potenza focus more on performance.

how about in terms of performance? and what tyre pressure should i use? is it same as written at the gas cap?

seems like 45 tyre choice much better than 40.

what is the current tyre recommendation for best-bang-for-buck tyre?

last time, around 4 years ago, hankook v12 was best-bang-for-buck, and it was selling like hot cake, every hankook shop no stock for this tyre, end up i have to get premium(in terms of price) michelin ps4 due to urgency to change tyre

now is it still hankook or other brand for best-bang-for-buck tyre?

note:
i have been using ps3 for 4 years plus until the side of the tyre like kulit kupas, now my ps4 also same
its time for my car to change tyre, but i dont need michelin ps cause i less travel using cars now...
*
I'd recommend Maxxis Victra I-Pro, price level similar to V12E2, performance also similar with harder sidewall but tread wear is rather low at only 240. I am using this now as replacement for the V12E2 on my son's car.
