Hi Sifus,

1. Brand : Any
2. Budget : Under 30k, 35k if really worth it
3. New/Used/Unreg : Used preferred. Ideally with warranty, maybe like a 2-4y/o ones?
4. Specs : No preference.
5. Transmission : Auto
6. NA or FI : Any
7. Type : Any, though since highway involved possibly a sedan?
8. Remarks : Daily commute to work to and from is 60km daily, so there is highway involved. First car for work. Possibly the maintenance wont be as good as a new car, but there must be some reliability gems out there no?

Thanks all Sifus notworthy.gif

Quick search for that price and year range, only saw used Bezzas and Sagas. Personas a few also. But if you have the budget and prefer warranty, suggest to get new instead.

I see,
I'm going used with warranty because since price fall off is the highest within the first years of ownership, thinking of getting a new-ish car at a pretty good discount.

Honestly leaning towards the used Saga for more stable driving in highways but, I've heard of bad experience with spare part shortage with Proton leading to long periods of unavailability. Would love to hear from Saga owners regarding the service centers and parts.

Thanks for your advice.

see my reply up top for vw vento/polo

I see. As you said VW does have the 'reputation' of being a conti, which usually comes with the higher maintenance cost compared to asian equivalents like T/H, so it feels pretty off-putting to think about a Vento. However I think the warranty for VW is only 3 years my dad says cuz he owns a Polo, so I can't find one that's still under warranty and within my budget.

Thanks for the insight though!

No one will sell budget range cars within a few years. Luxury cars yes cos they can afford to ignore the depreciation and are not tied down w loans.

At these price range, those available and still within warranty are likely to be lemons or accident/flood units. Hence, your strategy to look for such Gems will take time and knowledge.

The concern here would be if you can't spot them as lemons (being your first car? And not having specialized knowledge of particular makes eg Volkswagen) you might face unnecessary headache if taken for a ride by unscrupulous sellers or dealers of which there are plenty.

Hence, concerned /k members usually suggest new.
Such as Saga Std Auto 36K w 5yr warranty and should meet your 60km daily requirement easily

Hmm okay, if its is an accident/flood unit then I have to take extra care or to bring an independent mechanic to inspect the car for such signs. Extra cost and time.

If it's a lemon unit however, that's where the warranty can come in, isn't it? Though I suppose it can be a hassle and well, if we're talking about the Saga I've heard horror stories regarding their SC, so that's another potential headache.

As you said, it seems I need to bring someone in to check as well, or just go new route for peace of mind. Since I'm not in a rush I should take the time first to learn the signs and whatnot. Just trying to find out my options for now.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Hi All,

1. Brand : Prefer Japanese or reliable brand no easy breakdown.
2. Budget. Max 50k, can be above if manufactured on 2019 or newer due to 9 year loan availability. See remarks for possible higher price.
3. New/Used/Unreg. Used
4. Specs.: No Preference
5. Transmission. No manual
6. NA or FI ? No Preference
7. Type: Sedan or Hatch. Maybe Wagon but unlikely to be available.

8. Remarks.: This will be a daily use car. Currently using Proton Iriz 2022 1.3. I love almost everything bout the car, except for the fuel guzzling engine. My aim is to reduce the monthly commitment of currently 670 (370 car + 300 fuel) as I do roughly 350km per week of travel. My thinking is if for the same money I could experience a better (more comfortable) car that would be very nice. I have a few let's say candidates so far:

1) City Hybrid GM6: 2019 model still should have 9 year used car loan available + still have at least 2 years of battery warranty left. 2018 models I think can get for under 43k with 1 year battery remaining I think, which can be viable, but left with a 7 year loan. Being an only 6 year old honda, I think this platform should be relatively bulletproof.

2) BYD Dolphin, nearing the end of the year to maximise the EV depreciation. I see currently a used standard variant costs 75k, but with barely any Electricity costs for my usage I feel it would soon be attainable. Not now, a tad bit out of reach for now.

Appreciate the sifus help here to bring me to light some other options that I could have.

Hello welcome back from 2021 and congrats for getting the Iriz in 2022.

A. For comfort the City is not going to match the Iriz (if i recall my test drive of friends cars). Iriz is still the best car to chuck around corners while being extremely stable on highways. The 1.3 engine doesn't do the chassis justice though and it is better paired to the 1.6  Personally am still upset Proton is developing the new 1.5 Saga on the old Savvy platform rather than this one.

Hence I suggest you test drive the new City (still same platform as the GM6) see if you like it.

B. If cost savings is your objective, i would hesitate to move from
1. 3 year car to 6-7 year car
2. Known problem free car to unknown used unit
3. Normal ice to hybrid (need to maintain both engine & motor/battery & power split devices)
4.The risk of additional repairs as it ages will negate any fuel savings.
Say fc 10kml to 14kml, for 350km/weekly =1400km/month you save ard 40liters =RM82/month only (ron95 Rm2.05)

Hence if you want a better car, prepare to pay more and put aside cost savings.

Thanks sifu. Honestly I'm surprised to hear that the Iriz is more comfortable than the City, that's not what I'm expecting. Sure its a 6/7 year old vs 3 year old but I don't suppose Proton is known for comfort vs higher priced brands like Honda & Toyota. Cornering stability and sportiness aside that is.

Seems like if cost saving while maintaining relatively stress-free & comfort is my goal, staying with the Iriz is the way to go. Although according to fuel consumption numbers I've seen around, hybrids go for 25km/l and even reaching 30km/l on the extreme end so I think that should count for something.

Considering the new city is based on the same platform I don't really expect much improvement in terms of comfort then. That and 2ndhand costs go around 80k from what i see, which is kind of steep for me , especially that I'm expecting a much steeper depreciation for a 3 year old hybrid (2021 model) but i suppose the rule with hybrids and depreciation is no longer true nowadays.

Or maybe the rule doesn't apply at this price point haha. I suppose what makes sense is to continue using until i can afford something more comfortable. What would be the next leg up other than the new city you mentioned?

Being saving up for an EV but if this launches at 70-80K, am getting one.

Most important - Test Drive a few times.

Looks pretty good, especially as the cheapest hybrid here. So even if nothing else it does save a ton of fuel. Let's see how comfortable it is.
