I am just wondering is there any owners of Smart For Four over here?

Please stand up!

Or perhaps, anyone can shed some light on this car?

I 've read the review saying that the fuel comsumption is only 5.9 litre for 100km.

And for the 1.5cc, 0-100kmph takes only 9.8secs. Engine is similar to Mitsubishi Colt, producing 109bhp@4000rpm.

Oh, my friend has this car.

Acceleration quite fast, stable (not shaky), back seats a bit not spacious though, very fuel efficient, and you can add extra buttons for different functions inside. Oh ya, 1 more thing, the dashboard is kinda long, you can put files/folders there without worrying that they'll drop.

Fifthgear states that it produces 109bhp@6000rpm ... not sure how true is this.

Yes, I am getting one. biggrin.gif

And yes to e30, there is a stock clearance going on...the price for Smart ForTwo is going for appx RM64k and Smart ForFour for appx. RM76k. Both w/o insurance. Before this, it is selling for appx RM110k and RM120k, for ForTwo and ForFour respectively.

I think there are limited color selection at the moment because of the stock clearance.

And for RM80k, with insurance, it not possible to find any cars with electronic stability control, disc brake for all wheels, ABS and on board computer.

What do you think?

I heard that DC in US already phased out this model because of slow sales?

yeah, they've stopped the production of the car already.

I would mine a new old car la, beggers can't be choosers. And for the price I am paying I think it is value for money. Vios, City, Swift, and Jazz, which within the compact range do not have the features that comes with this car.

Well, as for safety, the car is protected by Tridion frame, or the chasis frame. The four disc brake system is fitted with ABS, anti skip control, stability control and of course, air bag.

that's nice.....meaning that it has all the features needed to keep the driver and passenger alive during accident....

how about maintanance wise......does the original parts tend to be more expensive and do you need to go to special service centre or any experience mechanic will do....

dun get me wrong, i am not trying to say smart is bad, its just that i am also contemplating of getting for two......damn cute car......

also, i am more worried of spare parts.......like some of the ford cars, the gear box damn expensive....

currently, the warranty is for 2 year with unlimited mileage.

As for Smart ForFour, the maintenance is only once every 20,000 km, roughly, 12 months once which cost appx. RM550.

The parts may be slightly more expensive if it is source from Cycel & Carriage, because it is a SMART ma.

However, I think it can also use mitsubishi part, as it shared the same engine with mitsubishi colt. biggrin.gif

Also, another economical factor is the fuel comsumption, which is appx. 6 litres for 100km. biggrin.gif

Smart is a joint venture between Swatch & Mercedes Benz if i'm not mistaken. They have been struggling with the sales of their cars unfortunately.

If not mistaken, the rear windscreen cost RM2000 to replace just in case someone wants to smash it to gain entry... wink.gif It's not laminated so it'll shatter even if hit by a stray pebble...
Get it tinted before you take delivery of the car...

I think for color options, best is to call Si Khiong Star. But the catch is, the price is a bit more than C&C.

I am buying the 1.5, silver tridion with black panels. I think that's how you call it kua..

wow really...at 20000km interval....550 is cheap man....but wondering what kind of engine oil they use and wondering if the oil filter can take the beating of 20k interval.....usually even for other cars that use 20k fully synthetic engine oil, they will advice to service according to manual which is usually every 10k km, because the engine oil filter cannot tahan liao....

hhmmm... you have a point there, tester1979.

Let me do some digging, and I will let you know. smile.gif

But regardless, at 20k km interval it is really cheap. My current car interval is 5k, normal oil, and it cost me roughly close to RM200 each time.

I'd rather buy the 406. It's 2.0, larger, much comfy and at least it's a car I can use for outstation travels.

20K km service at RM500+ is cheap... I think 20K km is just an estimate. Best to do more research and find out what's the 'ideal' mileage for service.

Imagine the car without TAX... then it'll really be worth buying for city driving.

wah lau eh...what car u use where do you go to those special service centres?

i have kia carens II 1.8L,

i use castrol magnatec 10W-40 which is semisynthetic, service every 5000km, assuming its just minor service where I change oil filter and engine oil, it will cost me about RM90 for engine oil and RM15 for oil filter (original Kia) and RM15 for labor. I go to this shop that the owner and workers are from Kia Service centres. They got trained and worked at kia service centres for few years and come out and open workshop.

64k is for smart for four 1.3, without insurance and smart for four 1.5, the price tag is 76k without insurance.

Yes, teo, it is available at all C&C, but I think is hard to get it now. Alternatively, Si Khiong Star also have the same models, but the prices is slightly higher.

oh, this a preview i came across;

But then again, what tehy say is true. With the ForFour, they are running away from their original roots, build an economical small car. The ForFour clearly ran away from that with a 1.3 and being larger in every angle.

gsuave you're really lucky man! I was about to put downpayment at SKS last Sunday but they were already sold out. SA said they may have 2006 stock with similar offer, but probably less discount. If that's the case then it's decided...no change of car this year.

It's pretty unfair for ppl who bought it 1~2 months ago. Their 2nd value just droppppppp innocently.
IMO, a discontinued car will not secure the future resale value. So 76K also not so ideal.... Just see what happen to Renault 19 and the wellknown TIARA.

I bought a used smart 4/4 year 2005 . but might be selling it off soon cause I'm not gonna be around to drive it smile.gif

maintenance wise , still okay . depends on what your service include I guess. but normally it should be like any Japanese car maintenance smile.gif

the spare parts to be honest is expensive but smart 4/4 can use some of Mitsubishi's colt's parts as well smile.gif

yup smart so called auto transmission is actually is what im talking about, the design inside is still like manual transmission which still using a clutch with activated via the clutch operation actuator, which will start giving problem sooner or later..
sympthom are at time gear free by itself, reverse gear very hard to engage, and gear goes to 0 display while launching after stop for a while i.e: traffic light.

I was thinking getting a used 2006 smart forfour,~~ thinking to trade in with my Savvy AMT 2007, due to smart forfour safety features.

If this is the prob, basically I will face the same prob with savvy lor.... hmm.gif doh.gif
I even change the robotic for the gear after it reach 45km.

So,.......should I consider this as a good buy or forgo coz I've got a good deal (their selling below rm50k)? rclxub.gif

I'm an owner of the 2006 model.

Only 2 problems so far... clogged throttle body (easily solved, remove and clean with carburettor cleaner). 2nd is the steering rack failure (no choice, bought used from chop shop and replace).

Car is now problem-free.

The 4/4 has many advantages... one of it is cheap parts since it shared 60% with Mitsubishi Colt. And many parts are available from Proton itself.

Original disc pad will cost over 1.4k!

Just use pads for Waja or Volvo S40... cheap, less than RM 400 all around.

Before buying a cheap 4/4, do test around. Or better yet, PM me the car plate number and will run against SCM database to see if the car has accidents or not.

Agreed. Gearbox itself is ok but the motors... one for controlling the clutch and one for shifting gears are sensitive. Fortunately, a local mechanic here has done a motor replacement for less than RM 3k.

Never ever send a smart to normal workshop. U need a Merc specialist. I sent mine to Keng Chuan for routine service and software updates every few months. Recently had the power steering replaced for RM 3k (official from Merc is RM 10k).

Problem-free car with superior FC. Love the paddle-shifters too.

What high maintenance? It shared 60% of parts with 2004 Mitsubishi Colt la!

Brakes 100% compatible with Proton Waja or older Volvo S40
Oil filter is 100% compatible with Proton Gen2
Oil sump nut is 100% compatible with Proton Wira 1.6 (4G92)
Wipers available from Tesco and Carrefour from RM 20 onwards
Clutch plate available from spare parts shop in Segambut for mere RM 1.3k and another RM 300 for installation

Only electronics is from Daimler-Mercedes which can be expensive if it breaks down.

Some u can service DIY such as electronic throttle body. Simply remove the throttle body, spray some carb cleaner and put it back. Will save RM 200 in service fee.

I did all the minor mods and servicing myself. If u love the car, u will find ways to minimize cost.

Great post describing same parts smile.gif. I'm wondering if the following parts are shared with other models:
1- V-Belt
2- wheel bearing.
3- Suspension.

I recently have the "Service brake" failure on my HUD and am thinking of flushing the brake fluid and replacing the pads. I was quoted 1.04k for the original pads - now I'm going to get it replaced with Waja parts smile.gif.

My steering rack failed 3 years ago - luckily I had C&C plead my case to MB and got it replaced for free.

All the above 100% compatible with 2004 Mitsubishi Colt. Take the old items and pay a visit to many spare parts shops along Jalan Segambut or Jalan Ipoh. For suspension, u can also opt for custom made by Titan for around RM 3k.

Service brake failure means the sensors are dirty, ensure u clean those first before putting on new pads or else u will get the same warning.

For those looking for door visors, I may have a solution - custom made / order to fit. No cutting or curi from another car.

Best is to shutdown/start engine a few times. You may notice the following:

1- Electric Power Steering not functioning (i.e. steering very heavy). I am lucky I got it replaced FOC.
2- Sometimes cannot engage Reverse (panel shows "O"). I've been getting this off and on (once a month). So far still can live with it, but it will die sooner or later....

Oh, and thanks for your help on the brake pads abcb smile.gif. I got mine replaced with Waja brake pads and brake fluid change for RM316. And yes, it hasn't been changed for 5 years (worn out)....

Actually, the Passion sold here is full spec. In UK, Pulse is full spec and Passion is base spec (even aircon is optional).

Check your bumper if it has sensors or not. Easy to spot.

All smart cars sold here have no reverse sensors. I have to install one for my forfour 2 years back.

that's nice.....meaning that it has all the features needed to keep the driver and passenger alive during accident....

how about maintanance wise......does the original parts tend to be more expensive and do you need to go to special service centre or any experience mechanic will do....

dun get me wrong, i am not trying to say smart is bad, its just that i am also contemplating of getting for two......damn cute car......

also, i am more worried of spare parts.......like some of the ford cars, the gear box damn expensive....
*
My cousin is owner for 2 unit of Smart 4 two, what i can say is, quite good and comfy, maintenance wise very easy to settle (but they throw the ball back to the Sales person la..) and any other things, i dun see my cousin complain about it, instead they complain lot about their Alza...

~yang saya tak boleh tahan~
they can park both car together in one parking spot instead of 1 each!!!
come my house dun worry not enough parking at all...lolz!

Isn't the for four a Mitsubishi Colt in a fancy dress?

The fortwo is developed entirely by Mercedes.

U can try Keng Chuan Electrical Auto Service in Sri Damansara. They do mostly Mercedes and have access to smart parts. Price usually cheaper than German Motor or HSS / CCB.

If u are adventurous, many Proton / Mitsubishi parts are compatible with the forfour.

No problem. I'm an owner of a 2006 black/silver forfour myself. Normal maintenance is almost like a Proton since 60% of parts is Mitsubishi. Only electronics and body panels are from Mercedes. Being plastic, chances of being dented by other cars is minimal unless accident.

Clutch not compatible with Waja or any Proton parts. U can use 2004 Mitsubishi Colt. Advice to bring a sample when sourcing the parts yourself.

My power steering on SmartForfour Passion 1.5 is now faulty. According to CCM, it will most likely be due to the Rack and Pinion. Anyone has the same problem before?

Yes. Ensure the rear O2 sensor is 2" away from the exhaust pipe. If same distance, Check Engine light will appear.

Hi guys,

I've been looking at used forfours for sale. But I noticed alot of them have a broken digital display (the one under the tachometer (right)).

Here's a picture:

Attached Image

Is that like a reoccurring issue? And like how much is it to replace one? And what does it display in the first place?

Much appreciated if anyone can enlighten me. icon_question.gif notworthy.gif
