I am a student who is pursuing an oversea undergraduate degree.

I am thinking of the possibility of going back to Malaysia to take an internship this summer and sending out cover letters to some companies.

What is the expected salary should I write on the letter?

The companies I am thinking to apply are insurance companies, accouting firms, banks or some other companies related to my major (business degree).

Well, if you're interning, the correct term to use is allowance, instead of salary. And I hear that the common rate for intern's allowance is RM 500 and below. I myself is currently receiving RM 400, but I'm in the engineering field.

Is it a must to include expected allowance? I find it rather rude to actually demand for allowance from companies, since they've been nice enough to provide you with an internship spot. However, I was told that once you're accepted, you have the right to inquire about the amount of allowance you will be receiving.

mine RM12.30 per day....my fren got none for allowance..so...if they ask u to state ur salary expected...put a logical amount...500 or 400 shud be okay..dun put 1k or 2k...haha..u'll scare the person off

You have a business degree, but you did not specify a major, but judging from your post I'm interprating it as an Accounting & Finance one.

I got RM600 from an accounting firm, and thankfully I've learn alot, experiences which include stocktakes(Genki Sushi =P) and field audits.

I do hear that Big 4 gives you mundane tasks as an intern, such as keying in stuff. I did that too where I had my intern, but it wasn't really much just as a time filler, and the fact that it was a small company means that I can easily have a chat with the manager and let him know I'm free for this and that etc.

Frankly, I would have accepted no allowance, owing to the fact that my family is easily able to support me. As such be thankful of what you get. Occasionally I have friends asking how much I get, and depending on the knowledge of the individual on internships, I usually get a correct response of "Wah so high?" or an incorrect one of "Walau so low, paid like dog".

i have to agree. it is rude to demand your allowance. the company accepted you for educational reason, not profesional qualification. you are there to learn not make money. but it is quite inhumane for a company to not provide any allowance at all.

It's true that even if you're an intern, the employer still ask for your expected salary. I was asked during my interview day and again, on the day I signed the offer letter. But I just answered a "reasonable amount" depending on my contributions to the company. Is it a good answer? I was only in Year 1 and yet, I received an appreciation token of RM600/month. Not bad eh?

good dy lor...but some senior from my uni get 1k+ from HSBC for intern...

haha..cant expect more for intern tho..as long as u get experience during ur internship...its all worth it even they dont pay u

Some company will write the allowance in your offer letter, but after working for few months ( Doing OT also ) , they purposely don't pay u any money.
This is what i heard from senior.

speaking of which...practically, the company does reserve the right to determine your salary aka allowance, and they do reserve the right not to pay u, because when u are doing internship, u are utilizing their company resources for your own training. and it's during these time that they do actually monitor your work performance and attitude, so just bear with it and treat it as a stepping stone for your future career. some of the companies to allow themselves to be put as a reference in your job resume too

Did you consider getting an intern oversea? I'm sure you would get a lot of exposure.

Not all companies have allowance for interns.. Take an example MAS, Hotels, Government offices and few others

u didn't mention if u were pursuing which degree? best to get an internship which is relevant to your course.

i would say that it is more like allowances, not salary.
it would depends on what task and responsibility that they gave to you. the higher the responsibility, the higher the allowances. if they give you salary, like 1k, i think that they would expect quality job from the students. thats my opinion.

i considered myself lucky coz some of my friends didn't get any allowances, but i think, big companies do give to their interns.

p/s: some of my friend did their intern in big company but didn't receive any. the company was like..how to say..biggest fixed-line provider in Malaysia?!

Totally agree with you. Why not since you are already oversea?

My senior got almost 1k EURO from Infineon AG and the other got 2k USD from Veeco Insturments.

If I had the choice, I would definitely take an internship here. (USA)

However, due to my Visa status and kecacatan in language, getting an internship is never easy.

I'm now applying for a number of internships here. But the worst thing is very likely to happen (rejected). So, I'm thinking of whether going back to Malaysia or staying here to do other work that will not be related to my major during summer if I really can't get an internship here.

I do know some student who study in US but still come back to MY for internship.
Normally they will get rm500-700/month.

do internship allowances comes with other things too? e.g. commission, overtime and medical/holiday leave.

like my case , it do have one day annual leave for a month .

internship allowance normally between 500-1000. The service line like hospitality or hotel maybe 0 (but they provide your uniform and meal).

If your internship is university course-required; then you might not entitle for OT claim; leave; or EPF. If you are purely seek foor internship opportunity to fill out your holiday, then mostly the company will provide EPF.
