Has anyone heard of this diet called GOMAD (Gallon of milk a day)? Search this word(GOMAD) on Google to see what's it about. Or if you've read the Starting Strength book, you would have come across it.

It's supposedly for people who wants to gain weight and muscles. On top of doing the Starting Strength routine, the person then drinks a gallon of milk a day, plus normal food. For how many weeks or months the person has to continue drinking a gallon of milk per day, I'm not sure.

I would like to gain muscles too and I think I'm quite underweight for my height. My question is if this diet is suitable? Milk in supermarkets is really expensive. One liter of HL/Marigold fresh milk is already around RM7. One gallon of milk is around 4 litres(to be exact, its 3.78541 litres, but I would just make it 4 litres) so you would have to buy 4 packets per day. That's RM28 per day. Multiply by 30 days and it's around RM800 a month.

Anyone try this GOMAD before?

Hi TS, I have not tried GOMAD before but this thing sounds way over the top for me.

I have a simple rule of thumb regarding everything especially diet, which is moderation. I eat everything I want but in moderation. Because personally for me the keyword for diet is sustainability. If you want to do it, make sure you can do it for the long run. And I do not like to suffer myself or starve myself from certain food. I eat everything that might not be healthy but in moderation (or even less than moderate for that matter). I still enjoy certain "bad" food occasionally.

I am not too sure how balanced your diet will be once you incorporate this GOMAD thing.

The easiest way to gain weight/muscle is to have calories surplus of your TDEE. 500cal surplus a day is more than enough. And then the next thing is to increase your carbs intake to achieve the surplus. Make sure your protein intake is high enough. If you do this, you will be fine. It is very simple if you are committed in your diet. You will not need this gomad bullshit.

You might as well drink a gallon of curry laksa a day. I'm sure you'll get the same result.

Step 1: Ditch the GOMAD till you know calories

Step 2: know your TDEE, to gain, eat at surplus 500, to lose, eat at deficit 500
http://www.iifym.com/iifym-calculator/

Step 3: Train (starting strength, stronglift, kethnab, xyz, whatever, for first 3 months, you'll gain no matter what you do)
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/371250

Step 4: Re-evaluate your progress

gomad with starting strength?
just curious, u posted a topic about starting strength 1 month ago...but have u even started?
u say want to put on 20kg of lean mass...naturally and healthy way would take way more than a yr to do...unless u just want to gain 20kg of fat just eat pizza everyday in front of tv...or 4 gallons of milk also can...but pizza is cheaper.

what u need to do is learn how to count calories.
doesnt matter whether u think u are eating alot, if u got no proof of calories coming in then its all useless.

and gomad does not stand for gallon of milk a day, it literally stands for 'go mad'...so obvious its a troll trend just to make ppl fat.

Herbalife kind of bs? This method is in the Starting Strength book by Mark Rippetoe, so I'm sure it can't just be bs right? It probably works for some people.

And I already know the TDEE and calorie stuff that u mentioned, thanks.

Yea I've started, and so far everything's fine. Just improving my lifting form and figuring out calories in the food that I eat. I'm still learning more about many things though.

Is it really a troll trend? It's recommended by Mark Rippetoe himself in his book. Although I also think 4 gallons of milk a day is too much, just wondering if anyone tried it before.

Seriously?
Not to say, different brand of milk gives different macro, HL has most protein.
Troll trend? You did the math? 1 gallon of what brand of milk?
Do we need to try to see the result while we already know more or less how the outcome will be?

If we follow the rules of 1g protein per pound of body weight, you need to be exact 189lb for 1gallon of milk to fit into your TDEE
I don't need that much, some people will need more.

if u take 1 gallon of milk, u will be getting 5670mg...so lets see...stroke? muscle pain? kidney problems? hmm.

One of you even take the effort to find those pictures of that slogan and the picture of the human brain rclxms.gif

To be honest, I still have a lot more to learn. So maybe questions like what I ask would pop up right? There's no need to be so condescending and showing you are more superior.

If you tell me to search and read more on the internet before opening a thread, I did search for GOMAD on google, and some people on Reddit think it brought them results. It can't be all that bad. It probably works for certain demographics, especially the really really skinny ones who can't gain weight at all. And this diet isn't for long term. Maybe just a few weeks or months.

Give it a try mate. Please share your results, quite interested. But my wallet is not agreeing given the prices of milk in Malaysia.

Just by seeing the calories alone, yes you will gain alot, but fat, not muscle.

and that is, if only your body can take so much minerals & vitamins daily. You will suffer from minerals / vitamin poisoning before any things happens.

No shortcut in bulking or cutting.

Do give 1 gal of milk a day a try. I'm placing a RM5 bet that you'd be spewing water from the other end.

On a serious note, don't.

There's no magical effect of a gal of milk.

The idea just sounds simple and seems appealing/like a magical solution for a desperate person, just like any other fad.

A gal of milk roughly amounts to 2,300 kcal, of which 50% or 1,150 kcal comes from fats, 20% or 500 kcal from protein, and the remaining 30% or 650 kcal from carbs.

To give you a new perspective, you'd be able to achieve the same with:

8 Tbsp of olive oil = 1,060 kcal (a good spaghetti can already contain about 3-4 Tbsp)
3 scoops of whey protein giving 72 grams of protein and some fats (360 kcal)
Three normal plates of rice in one day (600 kcal)
2 bananas (150 kcal)
2 pieces of white gardenia bread (200 kcal)

Total 2,370 kcal

I'm sure you can eat more variety than that in a day, if you want to.

They can't gain weight because they are not eating at calories surplus even though they think that they did.

GOMAD is just another method that is trying to make you gain weight easier. You could easily do the same (gain weight) if you know what to eat in order to achieve calories surplus. There is no short cut. Gain weight takes time, so does lose fat.
