A lot of controversy around this.

First, statistics say the gout will go away without treatment, in 7-14 days. Often no more attacks within 1-2 years.

So, anything taken before next attack years away looks like it is a miracle cure. Might really be good, but don't know.

On the other hand, allopurinol needs to be taken daily for years, and 80% patients fail to do so, so when an attack comes, they say allopurinol useless.

Extreme diets impossible to maintain for most people. Claimed that only animal proteins cause problem. Vegetables high in purine do not.

Baking soda can be dangerous because of high sodium just like spoons of salt. Neutralizing stomach acid destroys food safety barrier and reduces extraction of nutrients. Useless because the body has rapid re-balancing mechanisms if you try to change pH of blood.

So much more research and evidence needed. Proceed with caution.

I have osteoporosis and gout. My doctor prescribed me actonel pills,

Do you have them both in the same joint? Does one medication take care of both?

Actonel good for you? Some problems reported: http://www.drugs.com/comments/risedronate/actonel.html

It is amazing to just Google "actonel gout" and scan the titles without going to them!

Hi. Do you suffer from gout too? Did you know how much we gout patients suffer from medications? I felt like sh*t even before the alluporinol med.
I'm just helping you guys here and I dun earn a single cent.

Few months ago, I thought it was a fractured toe, since I bumped it. Long after it healed, suddenly swollen hot again without any obvious reason. After several days, found out most gout starts near big toe and is hot and inflamed whereas arthritis is cool. Colchicine traditional med, 2 tabs to be taken immediately then tapered off. Already late, so I took only one tab and next day all was fine, stopped and for a month so far, no more problems. I will not do allopuinol or weird diets.

When I bought it, only 20 sen per tab rclxms.gif but allopurinol 75 sen to be taken daily long term ohmy.gif We are lucky because in other countries colchicine is usually 10 X the price due to drug company rip-offs ranting.gif

Wow.. You are lucky coz your cochicine can control your gout. I took cochicine and didn't  work. Luckily I found my cure too.

I was amazed when I read that gout can subside in 3-7 days WITHOUT ANY TREATMENT! Possibility of a false, placebo effect even with tap water. Anyone trying long-term baking soda, please monitor your stomach acid, intestinal bacteria, sodium levels, blood pressure, etc. Wish you all the best of health!

@mareno and @Richard

Yes, as an effect of aging, the body begins to break down more of its own protein (notice skin and hair of elderly) and that is ultimately a big source of uric acid. So it is not clear whether reduction of protein in the diet will change anything.

Please worth for me to repeat, experts saying "gout can subside in 3-7 days WITHOUT ANY TREATMENT and not return for 1-2 years" so beware miracle cures, even allopurinol etc. from doctors.

I used to get pretty painful gout attacks due an unhealthy lifestyle. Just loved those red meats and alcohol.

I haven't had any attacks since I started exercising (mainly running) a few years ago, and I don't take any medication. Well, there was one attack in the beginning of the year, but that was probably due an injury interrupting my workout for more than 4 months.

No idea if my uric acid is lower than before, but I don't get those excruciating joint pains anymore.

Good for you! Just wondering, have you stopped eating any red meat or drinking alcohol, for how long? What did you do to ease the first attacks?

For many years before and even during my gout I have been, still doing weights, cardio, yoga. So perhaps it helps lessen the problem. Since the first attack a year ago I have been eating and drinking all the forbidden stuff DAILY but only one recurrence two months ago which one tablet of colchicine for 20 sen cleared up, and back to eating and drinking as always.

Said repeatedly, "gout can subside in 3-7 days WITHOUT ANY TREATMENT and not return for 1-2 years"

So my latest miracle cure: one deep breath before getting out of bed.

PS: I took the colchicine on the 4th day, so it might not be a miracle either.

Don't suffer from restrictive dieting, wasting time and money. Please go back and read my post #37 (and before that #23 #26) Be sceptical.

Conclusion: Best long term treatment for gout? Take in a breath of fresh air.
