I think you should try the free version first. If you are satisfied with it,then just use the free version.

These are the features added in the pro version.
Status icon displaying time, free memory and CPU usage (Pro version only)
Floating menu for conveniently managing tasks (Pro version only)
Full functionality in flip closed mode (Pro version only)

But if you buy it,you will get to upgrade it for free. For instance, right now the version is 1.30. If there's a 1.40 or something like that, you'll get to update it for free. Until 2.00 gets release.
*
Yeah, i've tried both. Pro version gives me more free memory (10%) whereas vanilla version gives me around 5%. I am now using version 1.00 pro registered version. I am wondering is there any diff between 1.00 and 1.30. rolleyes.gif

I guess you should get the pro version then.
Not sure about the difference though.
You bought the 1.00 version?
*
Nope didn't buy it. After using it for sometime, i don't think it's worth the money. The ram will decrease no matter what if the phone is running for long. I hope the latest firmware for the asian set can solve this problem.

Frankly, businessmen don't use such phones like P990i, according to statistics, mostly teenagers buy handphones more than RM1K whereas businessmen will buy those cheap and practical phones for making and receiving phone calls, they don't need a camera, mp3 player, touchscreen or even 3G either. That's why when shops see us go near them, they will welcome us with hands.gifbrows.gif

It has been almost a year now but I think P990i is not as successful as the previous two models, very few people are buying it, you see more people with O2 than this model.  sweat.gif  I guess with such a customer base, nobody is willing to write softwares, apps or games for it. It's not worth their time, money and effort. At least, M600i has more softwares to download and use, it's better than nothing.

They could do something about the battery life by giving us the option to buy a higher capacity battery or better still, use solar power to reduce power consumption.  rclxm9.gif
*
If i am not mistaken, P990i has only been released for few months, not a year. It was announced end of 2005 but got delayed till September 2006 due to bugs. Pls correct me if i am wrong. smile.gif

At the price of RM2600, i think P990i is actually better than O2 Atom Exec which falls in the same price range. No doubt O2 runs Windows Mobile and has more software support, but the unimpressive camera and the lack of keyboard, and 3G make it an underdog to P990i.

Symbian OS 9.1 is quite new to the scene, therefore software support is poor. However, more and more softwares are being developed for it. So i think we'll have to wait and see. Hopefully more UIQ3 phones will be out in the market so more developers are willing to write softwares for this platform.

Sep 2006? Errr...... not around April 2006? Well, I have forgotten actually but it has very poor UIQ 3 software support. Good phone but let down by poor software support, at least the previous models had more softwares and games to install. Sigh ...... with the price crashing down like that, it shows that it's not popular among the crowd. O2 might not be perfect but it's running on Windows Mobile OS so it has plenty of softwares to cater all market segments. Just pray hard that SE will do something about this.  sweat.gif
Well, if I'm not mistaken, signal strength is poor is your router is downstairs and you're upstairs, I'm using Belkin router, signal is slightly better but not impressive. At least, it was better than my Prolink.  doh.gif  Try getting a 5dbi gain antenna for your router, that should extend the range a little and improve your Wi-Fi signal strength.  smile.gif
*
If i am not mistaken, P990i was available in April for reviewers only. Back then, many bugs were reported such as bad photo quality and extremely buggy interface so SE had to postpone it's launch. (i read this from a web site, forgot which one sweat.gif )

well..videos run smoothly without any lag on my M600i. but i think W950i can perform better as its more to a multimedia phone. M600i is more to a business phone. but W950 is kinda pricey. So if u wanna go for ur budget..take M600i. that's what i think. smile.gif
*
M600i, W950i, P990i all using the exact processor and same ram configuration, so i think video playback is the same for all these phones.

Guys, you have to try the tweak peak app. It really fastens up the phone.

It is a nice software. It disables the transition effect when launching programs or opening up the menu. However, there's a small bug to it. It requires the user to re-enable the program once the phone is restarted. sad.gif

Good news for all those using Taiwanese set of P990i. The latest firmware is out.

Phone: CXC162037 R9EA001
Bluetooth: CXC162058 R4F01
Organizer: CXC 162091 R4A13
CDA: 162008/69

This firmware is strictly for Taiwanese set only. HK, Chinese, Singaporean sets are not compatible with the above firmware.

wah!...another latest firmware but it's for Taiwan set...
anyone here bought that set...
wonder what's the different or additional features or bug fixed made for that set...
anyone here? cool.gif
currently for generic set no new firmware right? unsure.gif

Generic set already has an update which was released just last month. smile.gif

This firmware seems to fix a lot of bugs for the Taiwanese set. Apparently, Taiwanese set is extremely buggy and there was a group of users in Taiwan wanted to sue SE for that. sweat.gif

I just bought a SE P990i recently. The phone is a little buggy and sluggish, it restarted twice when I tried to fast forward a video. I tried to update the phone's firmware but it stated that it has the latest firmware. The current firmware on my phone is as below:-

Phone:
CXC 162037 R7A001

Bluetooth:
CXC 162058 R4F01

Organizer:
CXC 162092 R2A05

CDA:
CDA 162007/8 R2A04
Any advise?  icon_question.gif It's way more sluggish than my old P900i.  rclxub.gif

You should have gotten yourself a Generic set instead of Asian simplified Chinese set. Generic has latest firmware which solves most of the problems that you mentioned.

Anyway, you can try Swiss Manager (link on the 1st page) and Twin Peaks (which disable the transition effect when opening the menu) to boost your performance. Mine works like charm now thanks to the above mentioned softwares.

Since there are many of you complaining about P990i's performance, I think i'll put up a FAQs.

1. Why is my P990i so buggy?
Depends on which version and what firmware is for your P990i. Asian Simplified Chinese set is slower as it's on old firmware. An update for it will soon be released later this month. Other versions of P990i (Generic, European, Taiwanese) have the latest firmware available and you can update via SEUS or SE center (only original can be updated for free).

2. I bought an AP set of P990i which is of Asian Simplified Chinese version. Can I flash it to Generic version?
Yes, you can, but you'll need to bring it to SE center and they will charge you RM70-RM100 for flashing.

3. Is there other options besides flashing?
Yes, you can sit and wait for the update and use performance boosting softwares like Swiss Manager (on the 1st page of this thread and Twin Peaks for the time being. Twin Peaks is a software that disables the transition effect of the UIQ menu, and it significantly speeds up the menu navigation.

By the way, i strongly disagree that UIQ3 is slower than UIQ2. UIQ3 is out about half a year only, therefore proper optimization hasn't been done. Give it some time and it'll improve. Remember how buggy it was when UIQ2 just launched?? rolleyes.gif

I guess when the R9 update is ready for our sets, R10 is probably out for the generic sets.  rclxub.gif

i suspect that the firmware for our sets will jump straight to R10 and skipping R9.

I just realized that the alarm on my P990i has problem also. It is loud for the first alarm tone but becomes softer when the alarm tone rings for the subsequent time. Previously i had no such problem. It only occurs after i have updated the firmware.

What do you mean by "still"? It's a recognised issue for long already? Damn that SE. Never said it in their web site properly.

Added on March 3, 2007, 2:20 pmBtw, the system connector socket on my p990i seems to have problem. My phone can no longer get connected to handsfree, data cable and even charger. I have to plug in the connector really tight before any of the above mentioned cables can function. Anyone encounter the same problem? Can this be repaired? sweat.gif cry.gif

Btw, my phone is only 1 month old. doh.gif

Loose connector is probably due to plugging and unplugging your phone too often. Had this problem once with my P900i last time, the service centre didn't charge me for it but they told to unplug the accessories gently, if not, I'll risk damaging the phone's socket and also the corresponding accessoring. I've learnt my lesson from them and now I treat those add on accessories with great care.  sweat.gif

is it as what sunauto mentioned due to plug-in and out too often? hmm.gif

Yeah, i am always installing new software, therefore always plugging in and out. Damn, guess i'll have to send my phone back to the dealer. That means for at least one month i won't be able to play with my darling cry.gif
