typically stressed test my 2012 rmbp everyday, with VM for downloading and Clion (C compiler) and lightroom for photo editing from time to time. Looking good for the past few years.

The macbook can last so long and working like when you first bought it so I won't worry about the price. My friend's ultrabook has already shows of lag and heat builds up after a year. So if the average Windows laptop can only runs like new in the first year wherelse Macs can runs like new as long as it works, the cost of a Mac is substantially lower.

Way too expensive in what sense?
I think for the quality and the build it is quite worth it.

MacBook is God. I got rid of my W10 PCs and laptops after upgrading to Mac Mini and MacBook. All bought used. Even used also much faster than W10 with similar specs.

Not much. My MacBook is the 2010 white one. Bought it used at RM 1.3K but previous owner upgraded to 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM. Good enough to run El Capitan for months. I've not reboot / shutdown for 3 months now. Previous had to reboot after updating some patches.
