By chance, anyone worked in Hong Kong before?

I have been in Hong Kong, for travel but never lived there for lolng time.

What would be the cost of living like in Hong Kong eg to rent house, for food and living etc.

Appreciate if you can share.

The potential hiring company did not provide you accommodations? The cost to stay in HK is very hefty. Make sure the pay is REALLY good before you decide..

I am looking at how much I need to ask for if they providing accommodation etc, or not providing.

That could because the place that you went are all tourist spots. I believe you can get a decent meal that is relatively cheaper than usual. Just like how tourist go KLCC and Midvalley, they wouldn't go to those hawker stalls that workers go. You really need to survey properly before making a decision.

Manage to talk to a HK friend. The area that I will be most likely working / staying is Tun Mun.

Rental like HKD 8000, for cheaper option. Per meal is HKD 50.

You mean Tuen Mun? Which industry and what position you taking up there?

Too early to say that, I am just guessing. It will be some ulu place for sure.

Power industry

Thats quite a kampung place but they have quite a few shopping complex like Aeon and V-City which is quite new. Not too bad. If you dont mind smaller houses I think you can also find HKD5000 over there. I have worked in HK city for about two year. And food is much much more expensive in the main city.

Just wondering, when you worked for 2 years in Hong Kong, do you have to pay MPF ?

And their income tax is higher than Malaysia or lower? From what I gather from internet, seems to be lower

Be prepare to stay in a flat that is about 350sqft where you open the door and you can see your bed, kitchen and bathroom.

I did not pay to MPF as at that time I was on expat package and also all taxes are paid for by my company. My understanding is the the maximum tax you pay was 15%. Its definitely lower than Malaysia which I think was 25%.

wonder working in hk is the same as working in sg ?

My friends from HKU, CUHK also wanted to move to some other cities .. egL Shanghai etc. HK lifestyle is just too hectic and pressure. Everything expensive and the only thing good abt HK is lower tax when come to employment. This is only my opinion formed through observation..

I used to work around Dong Guan for half year, know the market very well

It's nice place hehe, not cheap to take the boat though, I think around RM 100+ to go HK and another RM 100+ to return

I see... I choose HK not because of place, mainly because there is an opening for a suitable position.

But true one of my main concern would be the cost of living, and about how much I need to ask for to ensure I won't end up getting paid lesser than what I am currently having.

If not change job lagi tolak gaji, rugi lah hehe

Question is how you calculate "getting paid lesser"? It depends what you want in the job. If its for experience, then I think getting less is acceptable. If you want to maintain your current lifestyle, then its another different story. What you can do is, list down what you currently do like, afternoon tea in Hyatt every weekend, spa every month, etc. Then you find equivalent cost in HKD. Factor in rental and also how much you want to save then that would be the salary that YOU think you should have. So it depends very much on what you want. As you are moving to a new country and not buying kankung in a market, you really need to do all this research. It took me 6 months of research and negotiation before I took the plunge to go overseas.
