A NON-governmental organisation (NGO) and residents lodged a second complaint on the alleged corruption involving the sale of a plot of land in Jalan Peel, Kuala Lumpur, to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Mind and Social Welfare Society (Complaints bureau) head Tony Tan led a group of 35 people in a peaceful protest outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday. Tan claimed abuse of power in the sale of a strip of land (Lot 810) that was meant to be a road reserve but was being developed into a 45-storey condominium.
“In August last year, residents protested and complained to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and even lodged a police report upon seeing a development notice board next to the land.
“Shortly after our complaints, the board was taken down. However, the development notice board reappeared earlier this year,” said Tan.
“Again we protested against the development and lodged a report with MACC in mid-May.
“We heard nothing further after lodging the report so I was shocked to learn, two weeks ago, that MACC had closed the case,” he said after the protest which lasted 20 minutes.
The group held up a banner while urging MACC to investigate the matter. Tan also claimed in 2014, the land value in the Jalan Peel area was around RM350 per sq foot, however the land in question was sold below market value at RM199 per sq feet this year. Tan lodged a second report on the matter yesterday, and hoped MACC would take the complaint seriously.
“It does not make sense. There is clearly something wrong taking place in DBKL with the sale of this land,” he said.
Tan said residents were against the construction of the 45-storey structure because the place was already very congested with numerous high-rise buildings.
“The condominium project, once completed, will add to the traffic congestion there.
