Ok... I take back my trebly comments......
Right now, I'm saying that Ibanez is probably too METAL for indie rock.....
Don't get me wrong.... any guitar can probably play any music....... but for that budget and music frameset in mind, I'd recommend a strat or a les paul special for that type of music.....

They are more Ibanez models than the RG. The SA, Artcores, SZ, all these are good takes of classic strats , Hollowbodies, and LP designs.

For bang for buck, it is really hard to beat Ibanez here. I think Asura got his SA for less than RM1k.

Mahogany body, H-H (there is a S-S-H version also), not easy to find quality guitars with such features at less than RM1k these days.

not to mention the 5 way switch which allows a wide variety of tone...but it still boils down to personal reference...

Don't go Bentley!!! They'll hantam you with the prices!!! Besides, they sell only Ibanez, Fender and Jackson guitars there....
Try a Yamaha show room like the one in 1 Utama for the Pacifica.

Let's clear a few things here, you all might hate bentley or whatever for whatever reasons but for the stuff they are carrying, Bentley has the best prices PERIOD.

The only thing that are almost list price are the high end Ibanez, Fenders, and Marshalls and that is for obvious reasons.

The rest of their stuff, the low end to mid end are cheaper that what you can get in the States. most of the time.

The only place that hantam prices are Guitar Collection, Rhapsody, and to a certain degree Chambers (a bit higher that Bentley for some stuff, strings especially).

And if you want a Yamaha, there is a Yamaha in KL Plaza just across Bentley, don't need to go all the way to 1 Utama.

The stock in the Yamaha 1 Utama is pitiful at best. They seem to be carrying more generic china brands than actual Yamaha stuff.

Well its never wrong to survey at first. Since Yamaha is just right across Bentley, I'll be checking that one out too.

Well..... that's true about Bents.... I DID buy their Jackson RR3 from them.

But like I said, You can't find the Yamaha and more "budget" oriented guitars from there.....

I just thought of 1 Utama because that was the last place I visited today......

Well, what is budget to you? Last I saw in Bentley, they have lots of Squire, Cort, Ibanez Gio all for under 900. A new guitar under rm900 is in the budget category di for me. There is also Santa Cruz crap for bottom of the barrel stuff.

Though Woh Fatt is probably the king for low end stuff.

...........and the king of bad customer service.

But credit where credit is due, Bents still give good deals on CERTAIN items. Heck, even my RR3 costs less here then in Guitar Center!

^ Full moon Swaaayyss... Lolx~ (grins at snipe_ex)

Indie sound???? Telecaster all the waay!! Tele's are made for indie!! I'd recommend Squire Tele (Standard) the 900 bux ones! Bentley would have the best range i suppose. Yamahas are just too pricey imho. Even though the pacificas are great.. errr.. it doesn't 'feel' quite indie... Ifyaknowatimeaaan Lolx~

Try em out, its lighter and you can swing it around like a machine gun! rRRrrAtatatatatata!!

Dude, I understand your love for Ibanez.... really I do. I'm such a loyal Gibson/Epiphone fan that it's borderline insanity.....

But when it comes to Indie rock, a Ibanez grg170dx would NOT be suitable. Yes. It's a great guitar for that price.... very good humbucker tone, average whammy bar and an average body. But for Indie rock, it's more about pure, raw tone then anything else. Maybe an Xtone Semi-hollow guitar would be great as well, but that would overshoot the budget already.

I DO agree with Snipe 'EX and gizmoduck that a telecaster would be a good choice as well. It's twangyness would be a good match with the Indie scene. A single coil strat in the same way would suit the sound also, but not as "heavy" as the Ibanez grg170dx... If you can find a good deal on a telecaster, even a Squire one (go to bents and see what's the best price they can offer you), that would be a great choice. Couple it with a decent 15watter (like CountPuchi says), the VOX AD15VT is a good choice or the VOX 15DA if the 15VT is over your budget and that would be awesome like a piece of deep fried gold.

A vox would probably be better suited for indie rock. If you're more inclined towards Modern Rock/Heavy metal, the cube would be a better choice because they claim the distortion is better.

Not too sure about the price.... but I think antonio could quote you a good deal on the Vox.... check with him

Sure I do....... because the Vox is a solid amp with great tones for great value..... at least here in Malaysia.
If I discovered this forum when I started guitar, I would have gotten a Vox as well. I don't even own a Vox amp, but their excellent ToneLab SE..... and judging from the quality of the sound, the vox valvetronix should be even better.....
BUT.... the only time I wouldn't recommend it, would be if the user is more inclined towards heavy metal and modern rock music.... For that case, a Marshall AVT series would be a better bet then the Vox.... Remember! This is for metalheads and hard rockers!!! Although Vox's distortion is excellent, the Marshall AVT still has much more punch and energy then the Vox could push out. Budget players however, should go with the Microcube series which has a tighter distortion at a better price.
I'm going to have to re-evaluate the MG15DFX to see if it meets up with the microcube or Vox standard......

Classic rock sounds or in this case, indie rock, can be achieved better with the Vox.....
