Also, do find where you can take the car to. You can't drive it out of state or if the state is so big (WA), there are marked area on where you can & cannot. Well, you can, no one will stop you but if anything happen while you're in prohibited areas, I hope you have lots of cash.

Unless of coz if you specify to them where you're going of which the rental cost will be higher.

Basic usually has some form of excess. Meaning they'll only cover up to certain amount. Take the premium or comprehensive. It'll cost more but you don't have a single worry.

Melbourne? The food culture there is really vibrant and changes quite fast, you might want to check out TripAdvisor for new ones ... otherwise, the tried and tested are the usual few lo.. stalactites for greek, Hardware Societe, manchester press, erm.. the market for some tasty meat sausages ... I remember people hype quite a lot about lord of the fries and the shepard's pie though i though it was just okay..

Insurance wise, its about the coverage value.. they will tell you how much basic insurance will cover, if you worry then can up it so the cover limit is higher.. worth it or not is hard to say.. I didn't got any and got away just fine, but when I went to collect my rental, there was a couple in the workshop that was wreck quite badly, usually because they hit an animal that decided to cross the road in the middle of the night laugh.gif

Yes it's easier. But do watch where you park. The max time you're allowed to park. 1/2P, 1P etc 1/2 P = half hour, 1P = 1 hour & so on. Buy ticket from ticket machines. Can use credit card too if you don't have change.

In NZ you can drive for ONE year with our current Malaysian license.
No need driving permit. Because it has English on it and we drive at the same side of the road as them.

It's fine. Don't worry. Just be aware of the hook turns in Melbourne CBD if you are driving. If you are renting car for a few days and need some discount codes, let me know. I have some.

I know it can be stressful if it's your first time. But don't let the driving part ruin your holiday. Nowadays with modern tech, it's easier than ever. Just be aware of the speed limit & parking zones. You'll need a baby seat if your kid is still little.

try not too, especially long distance.. Was thinking of driving from Melb to Sydney at night, at least decided against it..

otherwise, it's same as driving in malaysia so nothing too challenging. Get a good powerbank / in car charger, load up Waze and you won't get lost. The only thing is parking, we had a friend so he showed us some cheaper parking spots in the city, others can be expensive.

Hmm, I used the google map when I was walking around town because there was voice guidance and Waze/GMap when I was driving for the traffic info, accidents, etc...

If the GPS is like the TomTom or whatever we have in our cars here, I think those are completely useless lo biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

But must ask other forumers because I never rented it.

If you're not going to drive outskirt, Waze is more than good enough. The only reason to get a car rental GPS is if you are going to areas where there may be no or poor telco coverage.

I drove from Perth to Mandurah and still managed to get data signal to use Waze.

Go for either Telstra or Optus although the former's coverage is more extensive. If you have a MIFI unit, make doubly sure it can work on their network. I made a mistake once of trusting a seller here only to find out it doesn't work there. As I go often, I invested in a unit there although you must know the unit is locked to one telco only. You can get it unlocked there with cost A$20 or 30 if I'm not mistaken, if you want to bring it back.

i used old license also lalu juga just 2 weeks ago. so no problem.

the ruling for australia is that your license must in roman alphabet. no chinese / weird symbol etc.

gps, guna google map saja, buy AUD2/day 500mb package from optus, everywhere also high speed internet except on rottnest island.

No need IDP for driving in Aussie/NZ. Your Malaysian license is valid for 90 days or so.
You need IDP if Korea, China and Japan. Many places we can drive without IDP actually. If I remember correctly, Canada, America and Europe also we didn't drive with an IDP.

Usually old license also can edi but sometimes if they will ask for translation.
If you have new license then it's perfectly fine.

Make sure you get a car in good condition if you're driving to the outback, sometimes front back no cars at all and careful at night don't bang into animals. Cover insurance cause you won't know what will happen. Pay attention to the speed limit and parking signs. You don't wanna get a fine. laugh.gif

Don't need to bother renting a GPS. Just get mobile data and use google maps all the way. Data is Aussie is so very much affordable. Plus, it's always useful to be able to connect to the internet at any time.

Australia confirm can. Even though the websites will say need IDP but in reality they even accept the old plastic laminated driving license.

Sos: Personal experience.

btw if you renting car, check out apex car rentals. For me it was super cheap cos their package was zero excess by default.

Next Saturday balik Marasia for the heatwave sweat.gif

My parents love the wild flowers in the outback during the spring. But the drive can be quite boring la I was told. Plan to visit the outbacks during spring one day. Wait I get a mechanic boyfriend first in case car breaks down. rolleyes.gif

You can check the thread in travel and living for better itineraries haha. I don't exactly have a good itinerary for NZ. But just focus on South Island. When you wanna go that time then do research biggrin.gif

LOL I've not been back to Melbourne for a while now, but I was there during the Christmas madness so food and shopping was bananas! I remember going to Lygon St for Italian food. EVERYTHING was damn good.

And Max Brenner's- much much better than the one in Singapore.

This is a bit of a cliche, but do stop by Jamie's Italian if you can. Went TWICE when I was Perth in Dec. The seasonal drinks can be really good, as are the fish dishes. Had a smoked salmon salad and pink lemon lime bitters. Very, very happy.
