im more of a headphone guy tho, amp and dac not really important imo. will aim for better cans first.

The sound from this setup (HDVD800 + HD800) is more like personal preference, to me the sound is more suitable to orchestra and classical.

Headphones also need good and suitable pairing especially flagship headphones, then it will shine

Anax mod is passe. Super Dupont Resonator mod is the in thing.

Tyll concluded that he preferred the Super Dupont Resonator HD800 with EQ.

But if one is not interested to mod and not use EQ, HD 800 S is the better choice.

Why not the HDVD800? Apparently, it's one of the better solid state DAC/Amp to pair with the HD800 (and apparently so with the HD800 S)... Short of the Liquid Gold.

The main reason I never considered it is because it doesn't play well with planars, by several accounts. If you're only running the 800/800S with it, no worries. But as I wanted to use several different types of headphones from various makers, didn't think it was worth it.

Yes, I've always seen HD800 pairing with tubes. I do agree if just running the HD800 / HD800 S, then the HDVD800 is worth but if you have other cans, then something else is required... Like the Liquid Gold.

I've not tried the HDVD800. Might have to camp at Stars Picker to audition one of these days.

Little Dot mk8se, very good tube amp for HD800 with reasonable price.

I'm a very huge fan of Schiit Audio, because their products have a great performance/price ratio. I started from their entry level, moved up to the Lyr 2 tube/SS hybrid, and am now at the Mjolnir 2 hybrid. You should give them a try also, much better value than CA or Sennheiser, and pretty much almost anyone else out there. If you're really committed to going to TOTL gear, that's a different story la, but for mid-tier gear, I don't think anyone comes close.

Alternatively, there's also Decware (US-made) and Feliks Audio (Polish) for tube-only amps that are highly-rated (know several contacts that love theirs). I generally steer clear from the China-made stuff because I don't trust their power components.

PS. I bought direct from Schiit Audio and had it shipped back, made sure to confirm there's no issue with warranty first as well. If you're interested in either of the others, you should also contact them first.

Indeed I've read that combo sounds lovely. Prefer SS systems though. But then again if I audition it too much, I might end up liking it.

Thanks for the tip. Yup, the Mjolnir comes highly recommended but I guess I've yet to be at the level and patience to mess around with tubes even though the Mjolnir is a hybrid. Hence my preference for SS. So that leaves me with Ragnorak !

Anyway, if I were to get anything, it'll be a desktop DAC first. At first I had my eyes on the Bifrost or Gungnir Multibit DAC but people are claiming that the Mojo is on the same level as the Gungnir Multibit. I think for amp, my LC is sufficient for now.

There's also the first-gen Mjolnir, but you'll have to wait for one to show up used

Edit: While I was pondering the Ragnarok, I did contact Schiit to ask if they modify the voltage (115V to 230V) on their products. Apparently they do, but you'll have to purchase your amp first, and then send it in to them, they charge up to $100 for the service, depending on model. In case you're thinking of getting a used unit from the States.

Good day guys! I'm new to the world of audiophile. I just got myself an HD598 recently with a very good price. I'm using the Audioengine D1 to drive these headphones. However, I do feel like its kind of lacking something in the treble. Will these improve over time? Is there any good budget amps recommended at the price around RM500-1000?
