I read that some movie apps cannot be installed if you don't root it.  Is that true and what are the apps which cannot be installed?

It appears that the Kodi version is a Minix version.  How is this different from the stock version from kodi.tv ?
Will Kodi version 17 Minix be available for installation / upgrade ?
