Hi guys,

I suppose this is slightly OT, but i've got a Uniden BC246T, which, isn't a ham radio, but it's a scanner.. I've been listening to various trunking systems and it isn't much fun here since it seems that PDRM has switched to ASTRO 25 and all I get are construction sites/security/1utama support staff/ppl singing at 1am/bad jokes over the radio.

Granted I should have gotten the BC396T which does digital, but seeing as somebody has mentioned that PDRM's units are fitted with encryption modules anyways, I didn't think that would have been a wise investment..

So what frequencies do you guys use? I'd be interested in "listening" in as hopefully it'll be more interesting then the above-mentioned.

Thanks!

these are juz my point of view...
i know it is interesting to "listen" to ppl talking on the airwave.but if possible, try to take the RAE and be a licensed operator wer u can talk n listen legally.all the frequencies we use are juz for licensed HAMsters.i think it is impossible to listen to the PDRM as u have said, they have enccrypted their frequencies.

you do know that scanner are illegal in Malaysia - and even if u listen to trunking, they switch everytime the the ptt is pressed sooits kinda hard to follow ... and pdrm scanning ar, all i can tell is they operate on 170 - 180 on most states and district but recently if u noticed they have added a UHF antenna to their patrol car, so i would say they are utilising the UHF band as well ... not sure la, those can be trunking as well .... the long antenna is VHF and the short one is UHF as UHF's propagation is just not that strict ...

well if they do not have scramblers u mah can listen lo ... most out of KL, smaller districts will nt have one, so u can tune in to them ... but its kinda boring as its conversation between base console and patrol cars ... those out on speciallops will use uhf mostly ...

Yep. I'm just back for a month or so from the states, where it's perfectly legal to listen in, and a lot of the state agencies haven't converted to digital/ProVoice yet, so it's the best way to get local news "as it happens". The only caveat to this is that if you use it in a moving vehicle and you get pulled over, it can be considered accessory to crime.

The 246T is a trunktracking scanner, IE you just put in the control channels for the system and it'll track the conversations by assigned ID, you don't need to keep the scanner "scanning", so to speak.

Thanks also for the observations about the various frequencies.. I have noticed that you can pick up the encrypted channels.. of course you don't hear their conversation, but you can hear the squelch tail, so you know something's going on there.

Well, scanning is quite an interesting hobby in the states.. it's a pity that it's quite the black/grey area here.

AFAIK, scanning and listening to any channel is ok. Its transmitting any signal the unlicensed are prohibited from here in Malaysia.

not really the case, now the issue is not really there, the thing is that without a RAE, you will not have a AA(Aparatus Assignment) - without an AA, you cannot be having any radio sets with you ... and thats radio on VHF and UHF ... so no radio no scanning and monitoring ...

now a scanner, it scans on a wider range of freq ... and generally a scanner is illegal in MY ...
