USMC Harrier II crashes off Wrightsville; Pilot in stable condition QUOTE Emergency crews in New Hanover County responded to a military jet that crashed off Wrightsville Beach Friday evening.
According to dispatch, the crash was first reported around 4:45 p.m. near the 1700 block of North Lumina Avenue.
Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Daniel House said a pilot ejected out of a Harrier jet, which eventually crashed into the water. The pilot had departed the Wilmington International Airport and was conducting flight training with the intention of returning to the airport.
Two members of the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue, Kyle Miess and Jeremy Owens, were first on scene in a jet ski and were prepared to take him to shore.
The pilot was upright in the chair that he ejected with when they arrived and was cold and alert. He had a flotation device that allowed him to sit out of the water and he only suffered a few bruises. [sos]

Fighter jet crashes into building in China QUOTE A fighter jet has crashed into a building in Taizhou, eastern China, triggering a fire. The pilot safely ejected from the aircraft.
Photos posted on Twitter by CCTV show flames coming out of the upper floor of the building.
A crowd of spectators can be seen viewing the blaze.
Taizhou, a city of almost six million inhabitants, is in China’s Zhejiang province. [sos]

Eight soldiers killed in operations, helicopter crash in Turkey’s southeast QUOTE A total of six soldiers have been killed in clashes with the outlawed Kurdıstan Workers’ Party (PKK) while another two died in a military helicopter crash in the eastern province of Hakkari.
Six soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded as clashes erupted between security forces and PKK militants at the Çığlı base in Hakkari’s Çukurca district at around 4:50 a.m. on May 13.
A helicopter was sent to the area to intervene against the militants but the helicopter crashed at around 5:50 a.m. due to an unknown technical problem.
The General Chief of Staff released a written statement on the incidents, announcing that both pilots of the helicopter had died in the crash.
An air-borne operation was launched to apprehend the militants, the statement said, adding that six PKK militants have been killed so far. [sos]

Two die in UAE military plane crash QUOTE A pilot and instructor have been killed in a military air crash.
The General Command of the UAE Armed Forces said the plane went down during a training flight over the UAE.
“The accident resulted in the death of the crew consisting of a pilot and instructor and authorities are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the accident," said a statement issued by state news agency Wam.

Libyan Air Force helicopter crashes in Tobruk, no one injured  QUOTE A Libyan airforce helicopter crashed as it was landing at the airbase in Tobruk today, but no one was injured according to armed forces spokesman Colonel Ahmed Al-Mismari.
He said the reason was the weather conditions, with the area suffering from high winds and ghiblis (sand storms).

Apache helicopter accidentally shot with live rounds during training exercise QUOTE TACOMA, Wash. — Authorities say a soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord who was participating in a large training exercise in California shot an Army Apache helicopter with live rounds.
The News Tribune reports the infantryman's bullets punctured the JBLM-based helicopter four times Saturday, prompting the exercise at the National Training Center to be halted.
Training center spokesman Ken Drylie says no one was injured and it's unclear why the soldier had live rounds in his rifle. [sos]

Libyan Air Force MiG-21 crashes at Tobruk QUOTE An airforce MiG 21 crash landed at Tobruk’s Gamal Abdul El Nasser Air Base killing one of the two people on board, Colonel Mohamed Rabie. According to an official the crash was caused by technical problems.
The aircraft was being used on a training flight. The trainee, Captain Abdulgader Ali, survived with minor injuries.
It is the second crash landing at the airbase in a week. On Saturday an air ambulance helicopter flying from Labraq crashed with four people aboard but there was no serious injuries.
The airbase also serves as the town’s airport. [sos]

Air Force B-52 crashes in Guam, crew bails to safety QUOTE A B-52H Stratofortress crashed around 8:30 a.m. on Andersen Air Force Base's flight line, the base's public affairs office has confirmed.
All seven aircrew members safely exited the aircraft. No injuries have been reported. Emergency responders are on scene, according to Andersen's public affairs.
The B-52 was deployed to Andersen from Minot, North Dakota, as part of the military's continuous bomber presence mission in the Pacific.
The aircrew are members from the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron and were performing a routine training mission.
The incident is under investigation and measures to mitigate possible environmental impacts are being taken. More information will be released as it becomes available. [sos]

Australian Air Force plane blows tires on Waco runway; flights halted QUOTE Flights at the Waco Regional Airport in Texas were halted Tuesday after a Royal Australian Air Force C-27J became disabled on the main runway there, according to local media reports.
Waco city spokesman Larry Holze told the Waco Tribune-Herald the large military aircraft blew two tires during test runs shortly after midnight Tuesday morning. Holze added to KWTX TV of Waco the plane’s crew was "shooting touch-and-goes" when the incident occurred.
A post on social media showed the idled aircraft on the runway leaning toward its left side.
In a statement to Today in the Sky, the U.S. Air Force Air Education and Training Command confirmed the "Royal Australian Air Force C-27J made impact with the runway during a training mission, damaging the aircraft, at the Waco around midnight May 16 in Waco, Texas."
“The runway is blocked and the entire airport effectively is shut down until they can get it airborne and get it up and going again,” Holze said to the newspaper earlier on Tuesday. Normal flight schedules appeared to resume at the airport on Wednesday morning. [sos]

French Gendarmerie helicopter crashes in south-west France, killing 4 QUOTE TOULOUSE, France (AFP) - Four members of France's paramilitary police were killed on Friday (May 20) when a helicopter crashed in a mountainous area of south-west France, the force said.
The helicopter crashed into a cliff face in the area around Cauterets in the Hautes-Pyrenees region, killing all four people aboard, the force said.
The reason for the crash is not yet known.
After some initial confusion about the number of casualties, the office of President Francois Hollande confirmed that the pilot, co-pilot and two rescue specialists on board were all killed.
An emergency response team has found the debris in a hard-to-access area of the mountain, the local prefecture said.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, due at the scene later on Friday, expressed his "infinite sadness" over the crash.

2 Navy fighter jets crash off North Carolina coast; 4 hospitalized QUOTE RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Two Navy jet fighters crashed off the coast of North Carolina during a training mission Thursday, and their four crew members were airlifted to a hospital with minor injuries after being plucked out of the Atlantic Ocean by a commercial fishing vessel and Coast Guard rescuers, officials said.
The F/A-18 Super Hornet jet fighters, based in Virginia Beach, crashed about 10:40 a.m. off the coast of Cape Hatteras, following an "in-flight mishap," said Lt. Cmdr. Tiffani Walker, a spokeswoman for Naval Air Force Atlantic. Walker did not have any further details. Earlier Thursday, the Coast Guard had said the two aircraft collided in the air before crashing.
Two of the aviators were rescued by the crew of the commercial fishing vessel Tammy, and the other two survivors were hoisted out of the water by a Coast Guard helicopter, the Coast Guard said in a statement. A second Coast Guard helicopter picked up the aviators from the fishing vessel and all four survivors were taken to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital. [sos]
