What happens when the power supply to the door is lost ? i.e. during a blackout

hi all,

considering to buy a digital door lock as so troublesome with many keys and carrying barang and managing baby etc.  at least 1 door less to cari kunci and open.

any recommendations? i saw got quite a few brands out there with the most common being Samsung. hoping to get one around RM600-800 only though. a bit lower budget, but as long as it works. no need the super canggih high end super tough etc one. if pencuri wanna masuk, i dont think this normal lock can stop them anyhow  .. thanks.

you want convenience have to go all the way and install one for your grill, one for your main door.

Anyway, do not leave any spare key in your house. Once a thief enter the house, they can steal everything one they have the key to the main door and grill. It will be harder for the thief to tkae your dinner table through the roof 

I think they are not expensive really. I think in the US the price is about 100~200. Maybe got people sell in Lelong imported from China. It is about your price and even use thumb print, perhaps. The Samsung I remember was about RM2000.

I would recommend not using number combination because the code button will wear off and can be easily guessed.

Another option is to use door knob follow standard. You can buy key which is registered type. This key cannot be duplicated because it is not sold. Then the knob you can change and use the same key for door. This way you carry only one key. How ever, each key hole is around RM300 also

yeah. its not too much for security. just figured if someone for example stole my wifes handbag. got keys and cards and all. probably has the home address somewhere. they can just go to my apartment and open the door so chill... but if need a pin at least its a bit harder and maybe they would just leave.
i think its ok. imported so no warranty. seems thats the price though, its just that i havent seen it sold here. i guess they only bringing in the more high end ones but i dont need the entire door handle. just need a bolt.

i also wanna get a digital lock in case my keys kena curi, then at least they cannot simply just walk into my place and unlock the door. cant find the news article but like the lady got her bag snatched and then the robber just went to her house and robbed them. just walk in and used the keys. so easy. i guess address is from IC or letters or something.

Actually Stainless Steel 304 grade security door is good. Just make sure it is thick enough, like 3mm will be the best. less than 2 mm is too thin, can be pried open actually.

But the weakness point of the doorset, is the lock itself. There is no need for a thief or burglar to attack your door, because the lock is so easy, no different than the ordinary locks on wooden door. The burglared case posted above is quite common, estimated takes less than 1 minute to enter. But if we just change the key cylinder to a high security type like KESO or EVVA, it will become near impossible for a thief. For a robber, I will still feel sorry for him. Probably after the police arrive, they are still trying to break the lock or door.

The point is, get a good thick door from a reliable door company, then get a good lock from a locksmith only. Sorry I am a locksmith from Kuching Sarawak, can't help you guys out in Peninsula. But I am trained from KL so I know some folks selling high security. Trust me, a door salesman might bluff but he knows nothing about locks. Door is their field, not locks. For locks, look for your locksmith. AND WE ARE TIRED OF REPAIRING LOUSY LOCKS INSTALLED BY DOOR SALESMAN!!

This is not my two cents, this is pure brutal knowledge.

Can you please elaborate on one knock to the lock and RM1k will be gone, since I am considering one fo these digital locks for added security.

The thing is, most if not all locks in the market can be opened by a locksmith in below 5 seconds. There isn't any need to break the locks. The reason I am considering these digital locks is the locksmith may not be able to use conventional methods of opening the digital locks. I need someone to confirm on this.

If the locksmith cannot open digital locks, then the only way is to break them by use of force with special tools. Some digital locks come with alarm, and I appreciate information if the alarm will be triggered if the digital locks are smashed open by force. If the alarm of the digital locks did not function when someone breaks the digital lock, then the digital lock that comes with the alarm function is of no use in terms of security.

Any thing electronic will be susceptible to failure. I got a reputable one more than 6 months ago. Its motor unit failed shortly after installation and need warranty claim to replace the faulty unit. During the time of failure I have to use manual key to operate the lock and hence my advice is if you are getting a smart lock get one with manual key. It sounds obvious and most will have this but still need to make sure this feature is available.

Pros
- remote monitoring and lock and unlock
- multiple options to unlock from numerical pad, thumb print, auto unlock, NFC, manual key, app, etc
- integrate to Alexa or Google
- temporary vs permanent user passwords
- Auto lock
- simple to use. Keyless entry

Cons
- many of these are not the most robust against burglary. Generally more suitable for gng community
- good ones with great features and tough against burglary are not cheap
- need to watch out on battery level. That said my lock battery level still HIGH after 6 months+ of usage. You will get alerts when the battery is low. Anyway my lock can also use power bank to connect to the lock as emergency feature.

thanks for the feedback, indeed the dilemma of changing ones is due to the electrical component inside so is choosing between convenience (the cool factor) and reliability.. and the challenge of installing 2 x digital lock for the main door and security grille for condo

love those features of being connected to the WIFI for all the remote management but any IT savvy folks would know that spell another layer of security breach

The security of the latest generation of locks are better but any connected device will still have vulnerability. If you are considering smart lock it should be complemented with security camera and system ... just to be sure. I think this is the tipping point where the benefits starts to outweigh the risks.

In my case the gng security is already good that security of the lock is not a major concern. Despite that I still have a security camera installed.

This is a very relevant link from a locksmith that shows how a conventional lock can be easily opened. I have personally experienced this so I am aware of the relevance of this post below. I just wonder if locksmith can open digital locks as well? The link and post below.

found out from my installer only Yale brand can do that.

not sure about the new model but the august smartlock pro is excellent, only gripe is the WIFI connect dongle which does get disconnected at times.

the best feature for me is the auto unlock when you are in front of the door granted you must have your mobile with you.

you may use the keypad or even your key to unlock the door.

it has all the other standard features you would find in a smart lock, ie guest keys and so forth.
