As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

"Winning the Europa League gets you into the Champions League, but that is a long way away. It is a competition we didn't want to be in but we are in it now and want to win it. We have to try and start again on Thursday."

Agree with Tsuto that the players need to be blamed as well. But IMO, when fit the rest of the squad are good enough to 'be' up there aside from our attacking options, namely the wingers.

From CR, Park, Giggs, Nani, Valencia(the buldozer cum tank) to the options we have now. Night and day. We have Lingard, Depay, Young and Martial. Young/Lingard are just squad/backup and you have Martial.

And just why we're not playing 433 we'll never know.

He deserves the sack but i don't agree if we need to overhaul everything for new manager. 1 or 2 additional is enough

The youth structure is in dire need of overhaul especially after Paul Mcguinness left.

We never lost against Big Sam.

And we certainly never lose so many times against relegation materials or newly promoted teams.
The occasional 1-0 loss (vs Wolves for example) during Fergie's era, especially League Cup and thats it.

This guy is creating records.
The interviews are hilarious, lucky streaks of 1-0 (94 min penalty i,e) 1-0 against Liverpool (poorer than us) and we can win the title.
Refuse to resign (awaiting compensation money)
Refuse to lower down that fkin big ego
Refuse to stand up from the chair and shout instructions or change tactics or having a Plan B when opposition is undoing us.
Refuse to change tactics when every bloody inferior team plays 10 men behind the ball tactics against us or employing tall strong centre backs. (which has always been the case even during Fergie's era)
Sell whoever dont stick to his philosofuk/not playing to his style

Just gtfo already.

Sure or not? If you say LVG has an ego, it's obviously true.

The owners/board... what ego can there be after this?

3 seasons since SAF retired, and we have not even led the league for any prolonged amount of time, let alone been in the running to win it. We've gone from regularly making the QF/SF or better of the CL (up to 2011 final) to doing no better than QF one time in the last 4 years and not even qualifying for it at least one time.

Meanwhile Woodward is day-dreaming about unrealistic superstar signings that don't happen, while our youth setup goes downhill and we pay over the top amounts for the players we do sign.

*
board want to continue tradition that we are not a sacking club, even though it's obviously not working... that's the ego

News leaking that we asked Ancelotti in NOVEMBER about his availability at season end. Our horror run started in December.
News leaking that we didn't try hard for Guardiola because he was already planning to go to City anyway.
Now news leaking about Mourinho negotiations.

You think a "not sacking club" does that? It's more like a Real Madrid playbook move.

Even when under Moyes we were losing home and away to rivals and random teams, we were not being linked to other managers THIS much. It was more about Moyes and risk of the sack, or players being unhappy with him. It looks like someone in the club is doing "briefings" to indicate our window shopping plan to get a new manager at season end.

This does not strike me as ego, it sounds more like bad process / incompetence... which is even more scary.

Did I complain? I was merely saying the truth. Comparing what we had with what other team has signed, we are not better than what they have in those position I have mentioned.
And you know some of our targets just dont want to come to our club and we had overpaid some of our players (you know other club likes to charge us high dont u? Not sure is this LVG fault or woodward)

Yes, LVG did mistake, and I don't really like him (I was not happy when he sold chicarito/Kagawa). But when I point out our players are also not good enough (same as the manager), I was being labeled as complaining? While those only blame the manager aren't complaining? rclxms.gif Don't tell me Pep can instantly make Rooney plays like god.

If a manager is good....we do not need to convince ourselves with this line "give him another season".

Good managers will show immediate impact and results.

Look at Raneiri. No need big talk, no need talk so much about filosofi, no need show ego, etc.
Just do the job and deliver.

So how much time do LVG still needs?

both players and manager are at fault. but as a manager, LVG is resposible for that. and it's easier to change the manager than players

Oh pls not this excuse again. Spare a thought for Raneiri & Leicester. Is it "his" team or is it down to the manager's ability to motivate a bunch of players who clearly wasn't his?

Utd is in dire straits if the board don't already know. Yes, mathematically still possible to qualify for UCL via the league standing but realistically? We still have to play Arsenal, Man City, Tottenham & Leicester & that's assuming we can win games against the rest. Fair play if we can beat the current top 4 but how confident are we, honestly?

However, if we change manager now, we can at least hope for a bounce (usually it does with a change of manager) & carry us to the end of the season.

Boring game is not the big issue. The amount of money spent is the big issue. Mourinho spent money and won trophy. LvG spent money and give us zero shot on goal.

Yeah, and it still take attacking football to do it though. And he also won the EPL with 95 points, so Mourinho is not really a boring coach. Sometimes you need to boring against effective and fast team. Points is all that matters..

In spite of the click bait headlines, he does say a Sherwood type would not last for long.

Thinking for the long term is well and good, but that extends beyond the choice of manager. The club operations team that supports the manager needs to be improved. Youth, scouting, negotiations to sign players.

Damn Rooney. Typical of his story before a major tournament. Shit for months(half a year). Been in some good form after that and then gets a major injury. He'll recover in time, but will not be fit enough for England and play like shit. This time England have better options tho so don't have to rely on him.

Time for Depay, Keane, Pereirra to step up.
Januzaj out for how long?

At least we would find out if the team plays any better without El Kapitan. Memphis did play one of his best games in the league while playing upfront with Martial. More game time for the likes of Pereira, Januzaj and maybe Keane. I am more concerned about the defence though. Smalling probably/should need a rest by now, or at least need to be rested/benched so he would get the same effects as Rooney and up his game again.

lets see if martial can lead the line..he likes to play on the last line of opponent defense..through balls would be beneficial

about time anyway..in the future he is expected to bang at least 20 goals per season flex.gif

Yeah..but a much more expensive + skillful one icon_idea.gif

If you noticed, Jamie Vardy also did the same..he harassed the last defender n hoping for mistakes/through/long balls over the last def..and it worked

vardy is stronger, fast and has a wicked shot... but very direct..

Martial is quick, tricky and can beat any defender.. but soft and has a weak shot..

For playing on the last line, vardy seems better.

LVG blamed law of Murphy

"When you start the game and your goalkeeper is number 14 [players out injured] then you are not starting like usual I think," Van Gaal said on BT Sport.

"A lot of things are happening in the heads of the players and the first 10 or 15 minutes we were not so good. But after that we came in the match, we scored, we could have scored more.

"The second half we didn't win any duel, any second ball. You cannot afford a second goal, but we could have scored also. Jesse Lingard had two remarkable chances, so it is the law of Murphy I think."

Those berdiri tegang fans are equally as moronic as lvg. "Changing to a new manager doesn't guarantee success" .
Yes of course it doesn't so let's just stick to a fucking rotten coach and watch him drag the club into shithole again and again.
It's like a person is dying of a critical illness , the current medicine is not working and the poor chap doesn't want to try a new medicine, because "it doesn't guarantee success, and im not the kind of person who changes medicine"

The best manager is to work out what is best for the team with available resources. If it is not working then change. The problem for LvG is he neither change nor he adapt.

Next, will Shrewsbury knock Man Utd out of FA Cup?

Followed by return leg vs Midtjylland & Arsenal at Old Trafford

Seriously, this is the end of Carrick

Mata was stealth like usual & apparently Herrera learned the art of stealth from Mata

Why need to change manager? Tahan saja mah. It's not the club tradition to sack managers midway thru the season ok.

We wouldn't get SAF if he were sacked after 3 years, you spoil rotten fans. If you guys want success to go and brag to your friends go and support Barcelona or Real Madrid at least they'll get a trophy or two each season....

You know what, scrap whatever I have been saying from the 2 paragraphs. I want to see if people actually read before commenting.

Now, on to what I really really want the club to do. Sack this prehistoric manager with his outdated pillow-sopi. Goddamn it, cannot tahan with his boring ass football week in week out.

Playing without flair and swagger for much if the season. Even if the team lose, but they play attractive football, I'd take that anytime (this again is just a figure of speech) than what is in store at the moment.

Sekian rant. Terima kasih.

Adidas deal for Man Utd

Previously, Adidas have sponsored Man Utd from 1980-1992

During that period, Man Utd did not win much trophies
(1 League, 3 FA Cup & 2 Charity Shield)

watch 1st half only against Midtjylland... so sad.... i dunno whether is the players purposely dont want to win the game or is the strategy that LVG ask the players to follow made me felt that MU dont have the will and fight for a win at all.... this is so frustrating happen every matches and it will keep on continue in such way until we change the manager or LVG able to motivate the players somehow which i doubt he able to do so...

Let's just forget about lvg and spare a thought for our former striker Andy Cole. Currently not very well 😢

Manchester United legend Andy Cole braced for tough battle to recover from kidney failure but hopes to be fighting fit by next Spring: 'I know I'll get there.'

Former Manchester United and England striker Andy Cole is determined to overcome kidney failure and is hopeful of making a full recovery by next spring.

The 44-year-old, who lifted five Premier League titles with United between 1995 and 2001, was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and has been treated at the Manchester Royal Infirmary over the past three weeks.

His illness forced him to withdraw from the recent UNICEF charity match at Old Trafford and issue a statement explaining his absence to fans.

Cole is on the mend, though, and told United's official TV channel MUTV: 'Fingers crossed, come spring or summer [I'll be okay], but I've got a long way to go. I know it's going to be a tough battle but I know I'll get there.'

He added: 'Not being able to do what I want and not being able to keep fit has been the toughest thing, I think.

'When you're fit, you take things for granted, like getting up in the morning and going for a run, stuff like that. I realise I can't do that anymore and it could be like that for the next four or five months.'

Cole signed for United for a £7million fee from then Premier League title rivals Newcastle. The deal also saw winger Keith Gillespie move to Tyneside as a part-exchange.

Cole proved to be one of Sir Alex Ferguson's most successful signings during his tenure and the Nottingham-born hitman was crucial to the Red Devils' trophy-laden spell in the 1990s.

He scored 24 goals in the 1998-1999 season which saw United complete a historic European treble.

Meanwhile, adidas released this shirt. Clearly they want LVG to leave with his boring... pillow-sopi

http://thekitman.co.uk/2016/02/adidas-take...an-utd-t-shirt/

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The plain black adidas t-shirt has has red lettering on the front which reads ‘Duty To Entertain’. Entertainment is something Manchester Utd supporters haven’t seen much of under Van Gaal’s reign with them being brandished boring and shot shy, not something you could accuse Alex Fergusion’s Manchester Utd teams off.

He has lasted longer than expected, thought the Anfield game would be his exit game if lost badly.

If Moyes was any indicator, only when 4th place is mathematically impossible + Europa League exit.

Given the pattern of results and performances this season.. only a matter of time.

In this situation , LvG is not a guy for the future . He's brought in for short term stabilization and success , what's the point of keeping him if he cant even do that ? He's not young and potential , its not like we might see the best of him in 5 years .

Picture this : If we bring in a 28 year old player who should be in his prime for short term success , season 1 did OK , met the minimum expectation , we keep him for 1 more season hoping for at least more of the same . 2nd season he starts to crumble and his form is on and off , being bad on most of his days . Do we still keep him ?

Manchester United will pursue a £60m deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, regardless of who is manager.

Louis van Gaal WILL be sacked if Manchester United lose at Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Monday.
Manchester United plan to give the job to Ryan Giggs, not Jose Mourinho, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho has a gentleman's agreement to take over at Manchester United, according to other reports.

draw shewsbury is ok? hmm.gif

even though it is not a similar stature opponent, it is a good win. the link up in first half is good. I expect combo sch-errera will improve in future.

at least, romero isn't clumsy with ball. more of perreira's cameo please

midtjylland, you're next (again)

it's either you are those who never watch matches, see result only
or you are a student who don't need to work and can hang out late night.

those who watches 90-100% of lvg matches this 2 seasons, especially this season will understand how it feels. if you are watching 100% of the matches and enjoys it, despite the result... you are a better fan than paul scholes.

I woke up at 3:30am.
Catch the match.
Eh....quite interesting. Not bad.
But then, it's only against Shewsbury.
But then again, I hope the boys will maintain this rhythm as this weekend they will be facing Arsenal.

Bro, do you agree or disagree if Jose is appointed? What about you guys?

Seemingly fever pitch this news & there's been a lot of debate on the pros & cons of JM. More cons than pros actually.

For me, if he's appointed, it'll be a knee jerk reaction to City's Pep appointment. They have to react especially since their 2 biggest enemies (the other being poo) have appointed 2 of the brightest young manager around. United is resigned to match them even if it's for just max 3 seasons (shelf life of JM). Somewhat justified if you think about it. What with Pep's same shelf life & Klopp is expected to implode coz poo will a,ways be poo tongue.gif

I quite like Poccethino. But he's unproven although what he did with Southampton & Spurs are encouraging.

Thrs not much good candidates. My best coach is stil carlo followed by jose. Since no carlo, jose is best choice. Haha. Better than lvg sweat.gif jose been eyeing saf seat for long. Why not? Mp is good.but doubt spurs wil let him go. Hes got a v promising young squad.

Other than carlo n jose wil take ole. Tho he has a bad season in qprs

I guess if United take JM, at least we would know he would be here longer than LvG (knowing he said he wanted to retire already before), unless JM become bored and decided to do something outrageous again to get him sacked, again.

Speed, balance and dribbling galore. Well, maybe except for Memphis. He is not agile enough. He does have the power in his shots though. Seems more suited for that central striker role instead of winger/wide forward.

What's your wish list for the rest of this month?

United out of UEL & beaten by Arsenal so that LVG gets the sack? Or...

But anyway, I'll take the UEL over FA Cup. And I don't care if Spurs or Lecester wins BPL coz it would mean one of these team has more BPL title than poo. tongue.gif

Martial out bye.gif hamstring
Quite a few players got injured during warm ups.
Something to do with the warming up techniques that's too harsh?

http://www.espnfcasia.com/manchester-unite...erious-van-gaal
The hamstring injury suffered by Anthony Martial before Manchester United's win on Thursday is "not heavy," manager Louis van Gaal says.
Martial pulled up in the warm-up for United's Europa League last-32 second leg against Midtjylland

its not about the scoring... its about his confidence... he dares to run towards the defenders... doing one touch backheel with mata... you see the way he scores those goals, its feels like he has a predator instinct (being in the right place at the right time which what makes rooney and chicha so good..

We've a low chance of beating Arsenal tbh.
With the injuries that we've, which some came at the wrong time. doh.gif

Let's just hope LvG makes the team to sit deep and hit on the counter. Remember the 3-0 defeat at the Emirates? High pressure, that helps Arsenal's tactics.

QUOTE
DE GEA COULD FACE THE GUNNERS

Louis van Gaal is hopeful goalkeeper David De Gea will return to face Arsenal on Sunday after missing Manchester United's last three games.

The Spain international was injured in the warm-up of the Reds' Europa League first leg tie away to Midtjylland eight days ago and has since been receiving treatment.

Van Gaal said at the time he believed De Gea's problem was not too serious and the manager hopes he will be able to call upon the stopper at Old Trafford this weekend, but there remains a doubt over defender Chris Smalling, who sat out Thursday night's 5-1 second-leg win over the Danish side.

"I expect [David can return] because I saw the way he was today," said van Gaal during a briefing with reporters after Thursday night's win. "Chris is a question mark, but you never know," he added.

Further question marks remain over the fitness of Anthony Martial, who the Reds lost in the warm-up before the second leg, but there was some positive injury news with the return to action of Marcos Rojo after nearly three months out, and both Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini are seemingly not too far away from full fitness either.

Asked whether Martial would be available against Arsene Wenger's side, van Gaal admitted: "I don’t know because it has happened before the match. I’ve talked with him. I have talked with the physiotherapist that already had control of him. I cannot say, but it is not as heavy as everybody thinks, but you never know.

"I’m very happy with Marcos that he played 10 or 15 minutes and how he showed already his form and shape, he was very good. But I have to build him up in the games and that’s not so easy, because he only had two training sessions with me. On the first day, he was with the second team and, on the second day, he was with us. So I take also a risk to do that, but I think that I have to do that now with 15 minutes and then 30 minutes and like that and I hope we can build him up.

"Valencia is also coming back and Fellaini too - in the month of March, a lot of players are coming back and then we have a strong selection again."

thats why i say looking forward to a good game. no refs spoiling the game for either sides.
