Hi Breville BES870 owners,

Just want to check whether anyone has used Urnex Cafiza 2 Espresso Machine Cleaning Powder for your machine cleaning cycle. Does it cause any problem or side effect?

Thanks.
*
I dont own a BES870, but I do own a BES920 (double boiler).
Whilst I still have some tablets left, I remember using Cafiza once, no problems or side effects I believe. After the backflush, thoroughly wash the portafilter and filter, brew a cup of espresso to ensure all cleaner residue are all gone, and throw that drink away. Drink the next brew onwards.
The cleaning powder main purpose memang is for backflushing the espresso machine, so shouldn't have any problems.
You faced some problems? side effects?

anyone know where can get 54mm Naked portafilter that can fit on the barista express?
*
I've tried looking for a 58mm one for my BES920, but can't find any in Malaysia. Coffex doesn't have them, and I believe Grandevest (Breville Supplier) doesn't have them as well. There is this site in AUS that sells them (can't recall the name), but it will be pricey, around RM 400+ without shipping. If you have friends coming back from US, can get from US also, perhaps around RM 300-400+.

With all that cost incurred, I think it will be better if you just upgrade your Machine. No idea on KD-310, perhaps check with Dankoff, they could have some display model there in their office. Cheers!

can YAMI naked 58mm be fitted into bes920? im looking for naked potafilter too
*
My goodness, the search results i get for keying YAMI naked 58mm in google search in my office laptop... doh.gif
Lets just call it a Bottomless portafilter biggrin.gif

No idea on the YAMI, in fact I didnt want to search further (haha), but i believe most brands would have their own portafilter to cater for the group head fitting.
Hence I will still go for a Breville one for my BES920.

So far no friends coming back from US or AUS yet... perhaps later along the year...
Or if you don't mind, can use those freight forwarding companies that send to PO Boxes, and then ship to Malaysia at a certain cost.

Try the 100% pasteurised fresh milk from F&N Magnolia formulated for home barista  thumbup.gif

[attachmentid=8617629]
*
Formulated for the Home Barista? I would also like to know how you got it.
The last time I send a request to F&N, they requested for a Company Profile, Business Registration...etc

From what F&N are saying this is solely for businesses, not home consumers. Let me know though how you manage to get it, im interested, thanks!

doh.gif  I didn't know this milk is so precious in malaysia, I tried it once at Coffee Fest here, it's really good! But I always prefer my coffee black.  thumbsup.gif Maybe our professional barista bro luvox here can point us the right direction and location to get it through PM? thumbup.gif
*
I PM Luvox sometime ago... He gave me some pointers...
But his case was different, he manage to get it from the supplier more than a year ago, before F&N applied the strict rules on businesses.
Now that the rules are in place, a bit hard to obtain it, unless u know some Cafe taukeh can help you order from F&N.

Recently I noticed that the coffee blend that me and my wife preffer do contain Sumatra Mandhelling beans.
I've tried all variants available through Beanshipper: Purveyor (our fav), BEAM, and the recent Palladium. They are good, but we will like to explore more.

I do see a lot of sites selling these beans online but are usually US, UK and AU sites. Since Sumatra is just next door, the fees incured for them to import to these countries and then deliver back to MY is just crazy (and the logic is cazy as well). Do you guys know any local roasters or indonesian roasters that do Sumatra Mandheling? Thanks!

Sumatra Mandheling is very common in Malaysia. Just have to see when it pop ups based on harvest date
I so happen to have Sumatran Mandheling with me now. Trying to work on a in house blend but if you're interested to try, I can always do 200gram bags of the Sumatran roasted for espresso
*
wow, I'd like to try, but not now, still have 500gm of beans to grind through. Maybe in a month's time if you still have them.

Antipodean source all types of beans from Indonesia and roast them in Bangsar & occasionally in Tan&Tan...i forgot their roast schedule...can check them out...free coffee when you get a bag...quite cheap too...
*
Oh yea, forgot about the Merdeka roasters, heard about them a while ago, will check out Antipodean. Thanks.

Morning. At the background Breville BES-920XL. And the grinder? Breville smart grinder. It worked well in producing pretty uniform grinds...
*
Wow, you guys are good la... after almost 2 years on my BES920, my latte art still crap, can't get a decent rosetta, most of the time just looks like volcano eruption, nuclear bomb or elephant head tongue.gif

Do you guys steam according to temperature? im doing it religiously at 60 Celsius, but most of the time the froth seems to be thicker, and can't pour so many fine lines...

Usually i start with 200ml of milk, by 60 C it will be around 400ml... a bit too much air?

Many a times we're scared not enough frothing and not enough microfoam...and so we over incorporate air into the milk early on...that's the problem...less to do with temperatures...

Just take a mental note the increase in level and how it pours...then adjust accordingly the next time

My estimate for 6oz milk in a 12oz pitcher...the increase should only be about 1cm but you need to roll it well

if you under incorporate, there's really not enough microfoam to do meaningful art, but if you over incorporate a bit... you can "discard" a bit by pouring faster during the mixing phase... experience will tell you how much you have over froth and how much to "discard" and whether you pour rosetta or tulips...

Also when you are learning, it's better to froth a bit more milk...this gives you some buffer and wiggle room. I pour every drop and it's quite a challenge...
*
Thanks dwRK, am testing out the 1-2cm increase, letting very little air in and more swirls, but like what you said, its challenging to get art as i utilize every drop of milk..
And I'm using a keepcup instead of a ceramic kind of cup. which I think is one of the reasons perhaps harder to tilt and do art..
So I think aim is still to get maybe around 2cm or around 3/4 jug at 60°C, then try my rosetta again.. maybe start with heart easier biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Bigboyz @ Apr 30 2017, 07:10 AM)
You could try 20%lesser and see the results.
*
20% lesser air? Im testing the approach to let in lesser air now, see how the art goes.

Sure! Coffee made from ground roasted coffee beans is perfectly healthy, especially when taken in moderation. Even adding milk is usually deemed as OK.

The part that is unhealthy is the sugar! If you brew your own coffee you will quickly realise how unbitter pure coffee can be. Then you can substantially reduce or even eliminate sugar altogether.

French press is a good place to start.
*
I agree with this. When I first started out drinking my self brewed espresso, I had to drink it with 2 teaspoons of sugar, at times replaced with Monin Caramel Syrup - too used with Commercial Flavoured Coffee.
But as time goes by, it feels a bit unoriginal, so started cutting down to 1 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1/4 teaspoon. Now, for the past 4 months, Im having it sugar free. And really own brewed coffee (depending on the beans) can be not as bitter.

@mansooriqbal, you can probably still get your Hazelnut cravings fulfilled with the French Press Coffee. Monin sells Hazelnut Syrup, Organic Hazelnut Syrup, and even Roasted Hazelnut Syrup that you can add on to your coffee for that Hazelnut taste. Do check on the sugar content though.

Sugar is my enemy bro. It gives me tummy and I am a gym person trying to lose it all. So yeah.
I will try with french press. Any leads else than Ikea on where to buy GOOD quality coffee beans? I like mild coffee flavour.
*
Exactly, so own brewed espresso, you can control that as opposed to those pre-prepared sachet coffee.
Just saying that there are Hazelnut syrups available to give your coffee that Hazelnut taste. Perhaps just 1 pump (10ml) to give that mild hazelnut taste, not as much sugar content.

Explain to me again as to the cons of the Breville double boiler BES920 vs anything in the same price range (circa RM 5k)?

Thanks in advance!
*
I've been using the BES920 for 2.5 years now, so far all is fine (fingers crossed).
Personally, this was my first espresso machine, and I believe it is a good starting/learning point for me, and I really did quite a bit of research back then and talking to some trainers and owners before I made that decision. Back then, the main competitors were NS Oscar I and R. Silvia, both of which was a little cheaper than the BES920. It has served me well these 2.5 years, and I hope many more years to come until I can afford some better prosumer ones.

Side note: while the espresso machine still works perfectly, the handle of the protafilter is starting to get a bit loose... have to put some extra strong adhesive there to keep it together.

You could be more resilient that you think rolleyes.gif
I once went 61 days without coffee while recovering from a bad case of GERD.
It was tough, with the youngest kid less than a year old and a handfull of an accumulated 5 hours of sleep daily.
But I survived! rclxm9.gif

on the brighter side, I can now drink at least half a cup of coffee daily without triggering the GERD thumbup.gif

I agree too, since I usually only brew a cup a day, if like most days I screw up my rosetta, there is always tomorrow's cup!
It does take a lot of practice and importantly the right technique!! Just found out about a month ago the way I hold my pitcher when I pour the rosetta was not quite right, and I do find my recent rosettas a bit more prettier (haha) but still not there yet.

Have you try coffee with low acidity, would it help?
*
Yes I've tried, dark roast beans usually contains lesser acidity.
But the taste feels more "Kao" and I havent yet able to appreciate dark roasts, and it doesn't really help with my GERD.
so im back to brewing medium roasts.

It depend on the location of selling.
Over my place  1L magnolia cost about 7.15 if you buy 2box = 2 litter will cost about 14.30 while 2L farm house cost about 13.50, way cheaper then magnolia but i do buy magnolia if they sell promo package.
*
Wah, where you buy Farmhouse so cheap? It usually cost me around RM 17+ at Tesco and Jusco, thats like almost RM 4 cheaper!
You sure you are not reffering to Farm Frsh right?

I think there's a Starbucks Reserved in The Gardens Mid Valley. They had an upmarket decor, a few pour over stations, and two or three featured single origins. I tried their latte but that was using their standard blend (roasted one step from charcoal), which was more substandard than I remembered (sorry not my favourite second wave). Not worth the added cost and any local specialty cafe will have better quality, more consistently and at lower cost.

That's my opinion anyways.....
*
Starbucks Latte... i hadn't had starbucks for a while, until one of those days I had no time to brew a cuppa at home, drove through a Starbucks on the way to work...
Man, I wished I had stayed a few more minutes home to brew that Latte!! hahaha tongue.gif My standards of coffee are not as high as some, but Starbucks latte, its just ....
It kind of reminded me why I stopped patronising Starbucks in the first place, its good for Flavoured Coffee, thats about it.

I would still seasonally drop by for a caramel macchiato, but never a latte rolleyes.gif
