Australian is a bit old school, slow and easy lifestyle
Australia is pretty cashless thanks to Eftpos.
I have been using Eftpos more than 10 years ago, and supermarket cashier is basically the atm machine.
Back then, Msia CC still required signature (and not common for us to apply for pin), which may not accept by some merchant (ie. Taxi).
E-wallet was basically started by PayPal, which was a by-product of Ebay (if not mistaken).
People use PayPal for convenience, security (protection) as well as for foreign currencies purchase.
Mr Jack copied Ebay and came out with Alibaba, as well as Alipay, the Chinese version PayPal.
I believe Chinese Gov is playing major role to turn China into largest cashless society nowadays, with the aim to minimize corruption.
Generally, western countries (inc aus) has wider acceptance of CC (and debit card).
They are not desperate for e-wallet, especially now with Visa payWave.
The introduction of ApplePay & AndroidPay, may slowly turn on e-wallet for European (and American).
For Msia, I believe we are following the Chinese model rather than Westerners, with the aim to record every single transaction.
That's just my own analysis, some data may incorrect.
