Helicopter crash in Afghan Southern Helmand province; 1 US soldier killed, 2 wounded

user posted image

QUOTE
KABUL (Pajhwok): One member of the US special forces was killed and two others were wounded in southern Helmand province on Tuesday, the American military said.

The soldier succumbed to the injuries he had suffered during operations near Marja district, US forces Brigadier General Wilson Shoffner said in a statement.

Col. Michael Lawhorn, spokesman for the Resolute Support mission, said: "We can confirm a US helicopter has landed in Marjah, and is experiencing mechanical problems. It was not shot down."

US news channels, including NBC and CNN, reported the troops came under heavy mortar and small-arms fire during a counterterrorism operation. A medical helicopter was hit by mortar fire while it was on the ground during the joint American-Afghan mission.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported: “The US casualties come as the restive province has seen an uptick in fighting in recent weeks as Taliban have attempted to regain control of key towns such as Sangin, Marja and Lashkargah.”

Brig. Gen. Shoffner said of the casualties: "We are deeply saddened by this loss. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved."

Out of curiosity, who produces the ammo for the Malaysian Armed Forces? Or are they imported?
*
The bulk of it is license-produced locally by SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd, but of course some other types of ammunition is imported from foreign countries

FALLON, Nev. (AP) — A U.S. Navy fighter pilot safely ejected before a plane crashed in northern Nevada during a training mission in a remote mountain area about 90 miles east of Reno.

Officials at the Naval Air Station in Fallon said Tuesday rescue crews safely recovered the pilot after the FA-18A Hornet went down about 8:30 a.m. They said in a statement that the pilot — who was not identified — was being evaluated for potential injuries at a local hospital.

The Navy said a safety investigation is planned to determine the cause of the crash about 25 miles east of NAS Fallon where high desert borders mountains on the U.S. Navy's Fallon Range Training Complex.

The aircraft was assigned to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center based at the station.

France soldiers killed in Alps avalanche near Valfrejus

user posted image

QUOTE
Five French soldiers have been killed in an avalanche while on a training exercise in the Alps.

The avalanche came down close to Valfrejus, not far from the Italian border, where some 50 soldiers were training off-piste.

Search dogs and helicopters immediately began looking for the soldiers.

Last week, two school pupils and a Ukrainian tourist were killed by an avalanche in Les Deux Alpes, 124km (80 miles) away.

A teacher is now under investigation for manslaughter after he apparently led his pupils on to a closed ski run shortly before the avalanche.

Heavy snow has fallen in the region recently.

About 10 of the military team were immediately found by rescuers and four were described as lightly hurt. But the five who died went into cardiac arrest.
